OK, before you click the link know that this is 2 minutes from the Christmas special from Children in Need tonight.

I am NOT going to add spoilers in this thread however as a warning from now, anything lower than this may well be spoiler speculation.

OK, I have to say I am very excited by what I saw BUT I have a theory.

Watch the clip again watch the performance of 'The Next Doctor' and his companion.

David Morrissey is a fine actor BUT never would I have called him a 'ham' actor, someone who over acts but this was pure chesse. This leads me to believe that The Doctor (Tennant) has landed in maybe some kind of theatre production and 'The Next Doctor' is actually an actor playing the role. I might even go so far as to suggest that it isn't done in 1851 but SET in 1851. Wouldn't it be a marvellous twist if this was a story written by Dickens character on his way back to London after The Unquiet Dead.

I love that idea, and I have no clue if it's my imagination, but I have this vague memory of hearing a rumour about this type of plot for one of the specials some time ago.... (maybe?!)

I liked the little preview - definitely got me excited for the Christmas ep.

Thanks for posting this - my tv screwed up last night and I missed the whole thing.

I'm inclined to agree with the theories above - and kinda glad to be honest as I don't get a good feeling about David Morrissey as 11. Out of all the names that havbe been batted about my personal fave would be James Nesbitt. I've always been a fan and his work in Jekyll showed how he can do the personality switch. Shame he can't regenerate backwards and we could get Chris back (although chances of him doing it are slim).

I will try and keep an open mind whoever takes over. When David first took over I did not have high hopes, I had not seen him in anything before and wondered who this little skinny thing was. Needless to say he blew me away and when I saw him in Casanova and more importantly Secret Smile I was blown away. Shame you can't get Secret Smile on dvd as I would love to have that.

The one good thing out of all of this is that we will get to see him in a variety of different roles as the scheduling for Doctor Who did restrict him somewhat.

As long as this Christmas special is better than last years...I was a bit bored with it.

As ever, another interesting Doctor Who theory from BotD...would that be some kind of meta-fiction you're thinking about Al? It would be nice to see a little more Dickensian storytelling.

We thoroughly enjoyed this teaser for the Christmas special at Pointy Towers...I'm hoping for some serious steampunk Cyber action in this one 🙂

I'd like to see David M take over from David T...sorry Faith, as good as he was in Jekyll, I just can't see James Nesbitt as the Doctor.

To give some more credence to my theory in as much as we know Russell is all for misdirection, lets look at Last of the Time Lords ending.

Who here thought it was going to be the real Titanic?

Also, if I remember correctly there is an audio Who where The Doctor lands in a story about himself.

My biggest reason for this though is the extent of the hammy acting of David.

If you remember rightly, Dickens does state he will tell tales of the Doctor as he is leaving and there is a definite Dickensian feel (What year is this boy?).

As interesting as the theory is, I just don't see it being a theatre production. I'd have to be a pretty elaborate one - we'd be talking about a huge stage for one... and where's the audience? And why would no one object to our Doctor arriving in the middle of it?

Or have I misunderstood you?

My theory doesn't answer all the questions, heck if it did then I wouldn't have a reason to watch/speculate.

Just take into account the over acting AND the companions reaction.

If you time travelled with a Time Lord would your immediate response to someone else claiming to be The Doctor be 'There can't be two of you' in that matter of fact way?

Now imagine that was an actress and she thought that Tennants Doc was an actor too?

Also, look closer at the Sonic Screwdriver🙂

Good thinking. Future technology could easily explain any immediate non sensemaking bits. :biggrin:
We'll see. I for one can't wait for Christmas (the Dr Who special is probably going to be my Christmas highlight - I'm not sure if that's sad or not...)

I am at breaking point with my glee for the Christmas special - I want it now now now now now.

Ohh and I think that after the Christmas special we'll find out who the next Who is.

Agree 110% with Colin Salmon - I think he'd make a spectacular Doctor.

As the this years Christmas special - hhmm.. interesting to say the least. Speculation is rife of course on various Doctor Who boards that I visit and nobody has come up with the idea of a holodeck style scenario on any of them yet (I may have to steal that idea and a bit of the lime-light) .... anywho -- I think it's definitely Dickensian in more ways than one, the year's about right for when Dickens would have been toddling about the place, and the way the 'new' Doctor speaks is most definitely from that era (though not being there myself I couldn't really say with 100% accuracy lol. Oh for a TARDIS!! LOL).

I for one will be glued to my TV for this and I don't know about anyone else but I can't wait for the up coming one off specials - and I think that they're going to be just that - special. To add something to BotD's theory, wouldn't the future Doctor recognise himself? I mean, the guy who's supposed to be the Doctor had absolutely no clue. But if he were a future version, he would know, righ??

Oh, I'm so looking forward to the christmas special! I will be watching at my parent's, where they actually have BBC. Yay 🙂

The only request I would make if I were able to is that Russell T. Davies before he leaves brings back the Sally Sparrow character ably played by Carey Mulligan. Ms. Mulligan I think would make a fine companion for the next Doctor or dare I say it, the next Doctor herself!!!!

I so totally agree with the return of Sally Sparrow, but why would Davies be necessary? Sally Sparrow is the creation of Davies' replacement, Steven Moffat. She could still return under Davies, but if Moffat isn't writing the fantasy special we propose where Sally might return, I'd prefer Davies left her alone, and wait until Moffat takes over to bring her back.
