In an tvguide interview with joss whedon, he was talking about the shanshu prophecies that there was alot of talk about that and that they had different ways lined up to bring him back first.
He also said that spike was going to come back abit like buffy did in the way that buffy was upset about being back.

Lilah came back as a ghost I think. I read in dreamwatcher the other day that when they were planning a Faith spin-off that Spike was going to be her side-kick and would be a ghost..that would have been interesting.
