Sheesh... almost two Angel-free months between the last episode (Nov. 19) and the next one (Jan. 14).
It's so tempting to dip into the spoilers. I almost can't help myself.
I satisfy myself by checking out the upcoming schedule and who's writing them.
Here's my own, personal best guesses on what's coming up based on that information:
Jan. 14 Harm's Way
This one's going to be written by Sarah Craft and Elizabeth Fain.
Craft and Fain appear to be kind of the Drew Z Greenburg of Angel. They generally write filler episodes and weak links to larger arcs. The last one they wrote was that werewolf episode.
I expect a stand-alone, filler episode.
The "Him" crowd will probably like it though, and you'll see raves on the episode string posted here at BB after the episode airs.

Jan. 21 Soul Purpose
Someone named Brent Fletcher is going to write and David Boreanaz is going to direct.
As far as I know Brent Fletcher is a Rookie to the Angel writing staff. That's OK. Remember the mind-blowing first effort of Diego Guiterez (from the production staff to the writer's pool) with Normal Again in Buffy S6, or Drew Goddard's rookie episode Selfless (often mentioned on Top 10 lists).
David Boreanaz directing could be a good thing too. The last time we saw an actor direct was with Sean Astin (Sam from LOTR) directing Soulless in S4.
That one was pretty good. Competently done.
I expect another filler episode, but a good one.

Jan. 28 Damage
Now the real season should begin. The cream of the writing crop is going to take over: Drew Goddard and Steven S Deknight.
If they ever plan to get a serious arc going I expect it to happen right here. I at least expect the ground work for an upcoming arc to be laid here.

Feb. 4 You're Welcome.
This will be the centenial episode of Angel. David Fury will be writing and directing. Fury is often given the responsibility of the most important episodes.
Expect something amazing.
