Spuffies do you feel the same about Angel?

I was in on a debate about Spuffy today and I really sat and thought about the main reason why I don't feel Bangel as much. The reason is that I like Angel individually. I feel like he improved so much going to his own show and not being just a person in a ship with Buffy.
It is different with Spike for me because I think his personality was already developed and he had a lot of traits.

So overall my question is do any of you feel the same about Angel being more likable on his own and on his own show?
 
Although I haven't seen all of AtS yet (I'm in the middle of season 2, but have seen random episodes from the later seasons), I agree that he did improve and grow as a character more once he got his own show. Yet, before I started watching AtS, I did like Angel individually on BtVS. I liked how he helped Buffy in her fight against the vampires. I liked how he had his own struggle with the First when he came from hell. I just didn't like how Bangel developed in season 3, and that was based on both Angel and Buffy's part. For me, BtVS didn't make me like Angel less individually, but rather made me like Angel less when he was with Buffy. Both of them started to act immature, which made me like them less as a couple rather than individually, if that makes sense.

That makes perfect sense I feel that way like he had some great moments on Buffy on his own. I just feel like his relationship with Buffy was what a lot of people remember about his character. I'm not saying that was a bad thing I'm just saying I like him on his own he really shines and brings a lot to the character. Let's see if that made sense for me lol I know what I want to say sometimes it just doesnt come across correctly :confused2:
 
I wasn't a fan of Angel until he got his own show...on BTVS I was a fan of Angelus over Angel lol..while they made a nice couple on Buffy...Angel didn't fully develop until his own show

Lol, nope. You're making sense too. And I agree. I think a lot of people just remember Angel on BtVS as "Angel and Buffy," which really isn't fair to the character. But, I do think that Angel was able to shine more, as you put it, once he got his own show. Angel was such a complex character to begin with that I'm glad they decided to develop his character through AtS.

i agree and I am glad they did the show Angel made me love his character on a different level.
As an individual character, I like Angel just fine. Even as a villain, I think that Angelus is the most unique and diabolical character who Buffy has ever faced. My only problem with him is when he starts hanging around and confusing Spike's lady, which is first, foremost, and always the way that I think of Buffy.

AS I have said here many times, the first episode of "Buffy The Vampire Slayer that I ever saw was "Once More With Feeling," when I taped it for one of my son's friends, and one of the things about the show that impressed me the most was the way that Buffy and Spike worked so well together and balanced each out. She was obviously the one in charge, and he respected and supported that, covering her back and sharing her load, rather than trying to do everything for her. When I finally saw the earlier shows in syndication, I just didn't see that with Buffy and Angel. I saw someone who was overly protective of Buffy, someone who tried to inhibit her growth as the Slayer at best, and at worst interfere with her doing of her job.

I think the fact that Buffy and Angel are both leaders means that they tend to hold each other back

I like what you said I do agree about Spike he always let Buffy shine and was there when she needed him battle or support. Love how you say Spike's lady ;)

Do you think you might have felt differently if the first episode you watched was "Amends"?
 
Absolutely. I'm not the world's biggest Angel fan, but I far prefer him when he's on AtS. On BtVS, I think he was boring, two-dimensional and really served no other purpose than to be Buffy's boyfriend.

Angelus is a different matter - he was interesting and entertaining for that run of episodes in season two.

I think Angel is a much better character when he's away from Buffy, when they're together they bring out the worst in each other.

I agree with this about Spike, too. He had several seasons to develop as a character before his relationship with Buffy, whereas Angel's entire character was created, in the beginning, to be the love interest.

Agreed that is the downfall for Angel and Buffy to me. The first time I watched the show I was like aw I love them but after multiple viewings you see different things and I saw this. I saw that Angel was there just as a love interest.
One of the reasons I loved Angelus on Buffy was his interaction with Spike and Dru. It was as if he was his own and existed all on his own, without being there as Buffy's partner.

Possibly so. I'm sure that a lot of why I prefer Spike with Buffy is because he was the first man who I ever saw her with, but I think that the same thing could be said about a lot of Bangels if they had seen Season 7 first instead of Season 1. Luckily, that wasn't the case, because then I would have been wrong for all these years.
 
I do agree that, to me at least, Angel was a more interesting character when he got his own show, rather than when he was with Buffy. However, I don't think that's the main reason I dislike Bangel. Admittedly, the first season I remember watching through properly was season 6; so I kind of fell in love with Spuffy, and didn't really want to give Bangel a chance, then again I think I'd still be a Spuffy if I'd watched through chronologically. I don't really know what it is about Bangel as a couple that I don't like too much, though, I just find them really...Boring? Don't get me wrong, I'm not completely anti-Bangel, I just think Spuffy is a lot more...interesting?

Spuffy IMO is more interesting. I like Bangel but after a while that type of relationship gets boring.
I think Spuffy is more interesting because they actually had to grow with each other and were always evolving.
Is season 6 one of your favorites since it was the first season you watched?
 
I like Bangel while it lasted, but I don't like Buffy or Angel as characters when they're with eachother because they're kind of immature. Also, I find Buffy very whiny around Angel and I like her alot more in the later seasons because she's alot more mature in my opinion. As for Angel, I like him better on his own show because he's a hero and not just a hot boyfriend like he was on Buffy.

The shortest way for me to describe this is this:

Angel was a great character. Just not with Buffy.

Buffy is a great character. Just not with Angel.

Bangel does not compliment each other; rather, they bring out the worst in each other.

Spuffy compliments each other, and bring out the best in each other.

And yes, I agree; Angel is much more likable on his own show, after he'd been fleshed out and developed as more than just Buffy's love interest.
