It just is 😉 Lol, but to be more precise, Buffy and Spike balance each other out and challenge each other like no other ship in the Buffyverse. They become better people because of the love they showed toward the other. They give each other strength, grow to trust one another, and come to rely on each other, especially when it comes to fighting the good fight. As Giles says, there's a connection. There's a deep and great love that runs between both of them that they can't deny. It's wild, passionate, and dangerous, but it's real. 🙂

"It's wild, and passionate, and dangerous." Word.

Thanx everyone 🙂 but come on I need more!!!
Why is Spuffy so special?

btw for those woundering, yes I ship Spuffy, but I also ship Bangel. I loved Buffy & Angel together in the beginning and really felt they were ment for eachother, but when they split and Buffy and Spikes romance blossomed later I fell for that ship aswell. i mean Bangel's cain't deny Angel does not hold all of buffy's heart. She said herself spike is in there and I feel he always will be. So I consider myself to ship both ways when it comes to Spuffy or Bangel.

Why is Spuffy so special?

Lol, more? 😀 Well then...

The thing about Buffy and Spike is they understand each other on a level that nobody else understands her. They've both lived a hundred lives and I think there's a connection there that we will see evolve over the next couple of years where she realizes that he really is someone that she can trust, someone that's a companion to her and someone that really understands her unlike anybody else." - Sarah Michelle Gellar (BBC)

For me, Spuffy is special because it's so unique from other love stories I've read or seen on TV and in movies. A soulless vampire, who loved killing slayers in the past, falls in love with a slayer and wants to become a better person because of this love. A slayer, who embodies all that is good and fights evil forces, falls in love with a soulless vampire (yes, I believe Buffy was falling in love with Spike in s6 and that scared her because he had no soul). She grows to trust him and love him for the changes he's made and the loyalty he's shown. Their relationship was never black and white, nor should it be because it makes it that much more interesting. "Love isn't brains children, it's blood. Blood screaming inside you to work it's will." Spike definitely felt that when he fell in love with Buffy and Buffy certainly began to feel things for Spike that she couldn't ignore.

I can't remember who said it, but I read somewhere that in every other relationship Buffy had with someone besides Spike, the surprises in that relationship caused Buffy heartache. She expected them to be good, but they didn't end well. With Angel, there was the whole curse, their break-up in s3, and then Angel leaving Sunnydale (and for his own show is NO excuse). With Parker...we know that one, lol! And with Riley...don't even get me started 😉 But with Spike, Buffy expected him to be evil and do evil things because that's who he was when they met...a soulless vampire who wanted to kill the slayer. Yet, overtime, he showed how compassionate and how loyal he can be, from the last scene in FFL, "Intervention," getting his soul back, and much more. The good surprises often outweighed the bad ones, and Buffy really began to recognize that overtime 🙂

If you want more, I found this livejournal that has a collection of quotes (which is where I got the above SMG quote) about Buffy and Spike. It includes quotes by Joss Whedon, the writers, and SMG and JM themselves 🙂 http://enisy.livejournal.com/1434.html

Thank you alot. I will deffiently check out that site 😀

Thanks for the link! I love hearing what the actors and writers have to say about it. To be honest, as a Spuffy, it gets a little tiring having to defend our ship all the time to non-Spuffies. Unlike other ships, we have to convince people that their love even exists. For the most part, you don't see Bangels or Tillows having to do that. It's wonderful to hear other people, especially the people involved in creating it, saying beautiful things about it. 🙂

Some quotes that really stuck out to me 😉:

"He's been looking for a world in which he can feel strong and confident, and yet when he falls in love, he's got a poet's heart." -- Jane Espenson (Season 6 Overview)

"But my number one has got to be the Buffy and Spike love story. I think that is just a gorgeous story. How do you follow-up her romance with Angel? I like the romance with Spike better. I'm more interested in the heat between those two characters because I felt Buffy and Angel had romantic love. Spike and Buffy have something so much more complicated that it's got that romance and all this other stuff on top of it which makes it so interesting for me." -- Jane Espenson (TV Zone Interview, 2002)

"If someone is there for you, is asking nothing of you and has loved you faithfully and unconditionally for all those years, and if that person is the one that you turn to for comfort and support when you are at your most vulnerable, and if they give you that comfort and support unconditionally asking nothing in return, then whether you acknowledge it or not, that is love, so yes, Buffy loved Spike." -- Jane Espenson

(Can you tell I looove Jane Espenson? 😀)

"The great Marsters with a chemistry with Buffy that is just completely different from Angel's, and different than David's, and yet works very, very well. He's more on Buffy's level. He's more... Their vulnerabilities come out, and I don't just mean as characters, but as actors around each other. And that really works, it works on a very different level. Their relationship has clearly been through a lot - much more, in fact, than her relationship with Angel, in a way. And you feel that history with these two, and they bring it to the set every time they come to work and that's why we still came to work, because they did." -- Joss Whedon ("Chosen" Commentary)

"This bit here I did actually add on set, not just the picture of Butthead on the punching bag, but this, where I said I wanted to get a couple of shots - we were going fast - and that one I didn't know if I was going to use, the two of them, and to me, it's almost the most important shot in the show, because it really shows, you know, the mystery of their relationship. And that's one where I wanted the audience to fill in the blanks. I wanted them... I wanted whatever you want to have happened to have happened. If people believe that on their last night together they made love, great. If they believe that on their last night together they talked all night, great. If they believe that they had a fight, great. Whatever it is, it's up to the viewer and I think the viewer has earned that, and I love that elliptical nature of their last night together. I think there should be work for the viewer to do in that sense, emotionally, because I think that makes it more textured, and that shot of the two of them looking at each other I just find beautiful." -- Joss Whedon ("Chosen" Commentary)

^ I never thought about that fade to black shot that way before...ah, Joss. I'm so glad he didn't define it for us.

"I thought this was a sort of romantic image, the two of them. We actually did it with real fire, but their hands were all gelled up and you could tell, so this was added in CGI and it looks beautiful. I thought it was a nice comment on their relationship. But what I basically told [Sarah and James] was: "Play the romance. Be proud of him. Love him when you say you love him. Love her when you say she doesn't love you. Forget about the crumbling world. For that period of time, it doesn't exist." -- Joss Whedon ("Chosen" Commentary)

"Buffy was in love with Spike the moment their hands clasped." -- Joss Whedon (San Diego Convention)

110% agree 😀 If you don't believe us, at least believe the writers and actors who created their story, lol!

Her quotes on Spuffy are some of my absolute favorites 😀

Also, something came to mind as I was reading quotes from that site, mainly how some people always wonder if Spike should become human or stay a vampire, especially after falling in love with Buffy. I've kind of always leaned both ways, but in that site I found, James had an answer that made me cry...because it was so beautiful 🙂

Q: If you could choose between being a human, living once, and a vampire living through many generations and seeing many things, which would you choose and why?
A: Human, definitely. I remember - God this is so powerful, I'm gonna cry. See, here's the actor's secret. What Spike wanted to do with Buffy when he was in love with her? He wanted to give her a garden, a rose garden... (pauses and paces a minute to collect himself, takes a drink of water) (voice shaking) ...because that was alive. -- James Marsters (Halloween UK Event, 10-04)

I love how actors create scenarios that the help them understand their character and what the character is feeling 🙂

Her quotes on Spuffy are some of my absolute favorites 😀

Yes! I also heard the other day that she was one of the few writers who objected to the AR scene in Seeing Red. That makes me respect her even more than before. An incredible, talented woman.

"...because that was alive."

That James quote took my breath away when I read it. Sigh. How amazing would it be if there was a fic based on his idea of a rose garden?

Really? She said that? I love her even more now!
prophecygrrl agrees: Join the club! We seem to all be sniffling Spuffies tonight. JM is amazing.

I love how he chokes up himself when he says that quote too. Ok, where's my tissues now? 🙂

Me too. I wanna see a video of it. I just feel it would be so powerful to see him almost cry. I want to hear the shake in his voice... I mean, I can hear it in my head... but I just know I'd break down if I heard him say it.

Along the lines of Spuffy things that make me cry... has anyone else ever listened to the song Innocent by Taylor Swift and put it in a Spuffy context? It wasn't written about love... it was written about forgiveness. There are lines in it that sum up what I feel Spike and Buffy would say to each other if they could "speak now" at various points in time. So much about Spuffy is forgiveness... as I said in an earlier post, their relationship is not about the "in the now." It's about the "how far we've come." I really think Innocent sums it up nicely and I cry every time I listen to it because I put it in that context.

I would love to see a video of that too!
Awww, this quote from JM is so amazing ♥ I read it before, and I have the same reaction each time... *sigh*

All the quotes are wonderful. Personnaly, I like a lot this one from Marti Noxon :

"The thing I keep saying is that it's not black and white. I'd love it to be, but it's not. To me, this is much more real. If these two crazy kids can make it work, it will be a lot more interesting than a kind of perfect romance with obstacles thrown in. To me, this is real life; this is people making their own problems. If they can get it together, that would be amazing" ~ Marti Noxon

I think she gets very well why this ship is so wonderful. It's real. And it can work between them.

I love too :

"[Spike] is incredibly important to Buffy." ~~ Joss Whedon (Interview ComicbookRessources)

🙂 😀

"In a lot of ways, Buffy's relationship with Spike is the most normal relationship she has ever had. There are no secrets between them. When she first met Angel, he kept his vampire identity a secret. And it wasn't until it was too late that she found out all the details of the spell. Parker posed as a nice guy, but was just looking for another notch on his bed post. Riley turned out to be part of an experiment and half brother to a cyborg monster. Each of these lovers turned into something Buffy definitely did not want. But Spike is what he appears to be. Buffy knows all his failings and if he has any surprises, they are positive ones. It's interesting that this is the hardest relationship for Buffy to commit to while at the same time being the most honest and open of her relationships (she deceives her friends, but she and Spike do not deceive each other). " ~ Jenoff

Yay for him ! 😀

I just heard that song because you mentioned it and I totally agree. The lyrics really relate to Spuffy and the idea of forgiveness between them both 🙂 I'm gonna start crying again now, lol!

Let it out!
I'm going to listen the song 🙂 She seems to be wonderful !

I think a lot to Spuffy when I heard some songs which seem to be written for them... More particulary "Une dernière danse" (="One last dance") by KYO, which is a French song, but it fits so perfectly to their relationship ♥

Not town, city. She's in Paris... NYU's sister school
Okay, it's a beautiful city ♥ I don't live in Paris, but sometimes, I go there. And sorry for the confusion between town and city, in fact, it's the same word in French, so it was a mistake 😱

I ADORE that song! and it does fit them perfectly!
There is a fic based on Spike giving Buffy a garden, by the wonderful Anaross. It's a lovely fic - and I can't find the link right now, but it's definitely on the Just Rewards fic archive - search for 'Unspoken' by Anaross.

Here are some new Spuffy questions - they are a mixed bag, answer any or all:

1. Has the fandom changed your opinion/perception of Spike/Buffy, for better or for worse?

2. How would Joyce feel about Spike/Buffy?

3. Hottest Spike/Buffy scene?

4. Spike and Buffy: better in their comedic or dramatic moments?

5. In your opinion, what is currently the biggest obstacle that Buffy and Spike would have to work around before they could get involved again?

1. Has the fandom changed your opinion/perception of Spike/Buffy, for better or for worse?
The fandom has made my Spuffy love much stronger. I'm still a Spike fan before I'm a Spuffy... but when I first joined here (which is the only group of the fandom I've been a part of), I was really hesitant to call myself a Spuffy shipper because I didn't know if Buffy deserved Spike. I felt he deserved her... but did she deserve him. Since then, I've come to decide she totally did and their romance was the best.

2. How would Joyce feel about Spike/Buffy?
Honestly, I have no clue. I'd like to say she'd support them because Spike was so wonderful to her daughter... at least the best he knew how to be... but I don't know.

3. Hottest Spike/Buffy scene?
The balcony sex scene in Dead Things. There's something about the public sex in that scene that's just... and their expressions... Sarah and James BROUGHT it for that scene.

4. Spike and Buffy: better in their comedic or dramatic moments?
I love them both so much! I'm going to go with dramatic though. They had some really great comedic moments and both of them had great comedy without the other... but I think James and Sarah worked best together in the dramatic moments. The best of Buffy and Spike individual dramatic moments were Spuffy moments.

5. In your opinion, what is currently the biggest obstacle that Buffy and Spike would have to work around before they could get involved again?
I have not gotten to the currently part of the comics so I'm not answering this.

S
StarSlayer
Oh, they totally both deserved each other!!! :D
