Spuffy #6 - General Discussion

I love how Spike talks about Buffy in upcoming issue - "Spike #5"!

(He addresses to Willow, asking for help)

"I hope she's okay. I even have goodish thoughts towards Xander. Take care of yourself. And her. Take care of her. If she needs you at all, move along and pretend you never got this".

finally got my issue of this one - what a treat!!
1. In the Girl in Question Andrew told Spike (and Angel) to "move on and you might catch her one day"

I think that Andrew was being mostly just Andrew, the same as he was when he was telling the Potentials about his confrontation with Dark Willow in Season 7. And that statement, as well as his actions in general here directly contradict his "Buffy doesn't trust you," speech in "Damaged." I also think that it is quite significant that it is Angel, not Spike, who quickly finds someone to share his bed (Granted, "moving on" doesn't necessarily imply sex, but Angel was forming a relationship with someone who was quite obviously infatuated with him, which I think he saw as "moving on." Spike, on the other hand, remained celibate, even though undoubtedly Harm would have been quite willing to engage in a little friendly recreation.

2. Did your support of Spike/Buffy waver at any point in the series (TV or comics)?

Not really. The closest that it got was after "Seeing Red," but since, even then, I had a suspicion that it was a setup leading into something important, I just took the proverbial "wait and see" attitude.
lol, so yeah it was difficult for me to reconcile.

3. Prior to Season 6, do you think there was a believable time at which Buffy and Spike could have started a relationship without Buffy dying/getting resurrected and everything else that followed?

I've always thought that when Buffy re-invited Spike into her home and told him that she was counting on him to take care of Dawn, and his "'Til the end of the world, even if that happens to be tonight," reply was the tentative beginning of something very special between them. Also, I thought for just a moment that Spike's, "I know you'll never love me..." was going to lead to something very deep and tender.

4. What do you think was Buffy's biggest "green-eyed" moment, where Spike is concerned? Spike's, where Buffy is concerned?

For Buffy, I think that it would be a tossup between seeing Spike and Anya on Willow's computer, and the Spike/Faith bonding scene in the basement in Season 7.

Fof Spike, probably seeing Buffy and Angel kiss in the vineyard in Season 7 (If he had stuck around a little longer, he might have had his hopes lifted .'

5. Do you think Buffy and Spike have a residual kinky streak, post-Season 6, or was that specific to the circumstances?

I wouldn't call it actually "Kinky," as much as "Passionate." Up until Buffy was with Spike, we never saw any kind of passion that literally brought the house down or was destructive to the furniture. I can't even imagine Buffy and Riley under a Persian rug.

Buffy had, or at least REMEMBERED having, sex with Angel once, when she lost her virginity, and certainly Angel would have been very gentle and slow with her at that time. Farm Boy Riley always struck me as more the "sincere" type than as being any sort of super sophisticated lover, more of an athlete than an artist, if you get my meaning. He, like Angel before him, was too busy being in awe of the Slayer to attempt anything kinky, even if he knew of anything. Quite possibly, his storehouse of sexual knowledge was as sparse as Buffy's was at that time.

With Spike, for the first time, Buffy had a lover who was just as powerful and just as passionate as she herself, but could call on over a century of experience to enhance the experience. Passion and forgetfulness were what Buffy wanted and needed, not lessons from the "Kama Sutra."

Wow. It's not fair they put Finchel up against B/B. That's just not fair at all. And be sure to vote for Tillow too! They're winning!!

Dude, seriously. That's the same thing I said and I ended up voting for Rachel/Finn. lol. And then they had the nerve to put Max/Logan against Logan/Veronica. And then a couple other ones, too. Oi! Evils.

Brian Lynch promised that in the issue 7 of "Spike" comics they'll address the issue of Scobbies finding out that Spike is alive.

We absolutely address when the Scoobies were aware of Spike's return. Issue 7. Good moment, I think.

I wonder if we'll find out about Buffy's reaction as well...

Yay!! I'm really excited for this. Maybe they'll get to explain the weird casual-ness of the Season Eight reunion!

I was so glad to see in those panels of Spike #5 that Spike still cares a LOT about Buffy. I wonder if that means that the writers still consider Buffy relevant to Spike's life, and that they'll include her reaction to Spike's resurrection.

Can someone tell me what's going on with those? Or something... The only comics I've read is season 8 and I don't really plan on reading the other comics... But I'm interested to know how the scoobies reacted...

In a nutshell: Spike fights bad guys in Las Vegas, and recruits Willow to help him.
Willow's participation wasn't planned; but when Twilightgate happened, Brian Lynch, who writes the series, jokingly asked Joss to lend him Willow to make up for the damage Twilight reveal caused. Joss took his request seriously - et voila! Willow became a guest-star.

Probably should post some new questions...

1. What is your favorite unintentionally shippy moment? (you know, an unthinking or accidental admission of how close they are?)

2. What is your favourite Spike vs. Buffy fight?

3. Did anyone convert you to Spike/Buffy, or did you start shipping it on your own? Have you converted anyone to Spike/Buffy?

4. Was Spike ever really a Scooby? Will he be one in season 9?

5. Do you think we'll ever get a canonical (in text) clarification as to whether or not Buffy meant her "I love you", or do you think Joss will keep us guessing for ever and ever and ever?

Answer any or all.
**And remember - if you have your own questions or other ideas for weekly tasks - fire away 🙂

1. What is your favorite unintentionally shippy moment? (you know, an unthinking or accidental admission of how close they are?)

BUFFY
Do we really need weapons for this?

SPIKE
I just like 'em. Make me feel all
manly.

A beat, then he drops his. And she hers.

SPIKE (cont'd)
The last Slayer I killed, she begged
for her life. I don't see you as the
begging kind.

BUFFY
You shouldn't have come here.

SPIKE
Yeah, I messed up your doilies and
stuff. But I just got so bored! Tell you
what. As a personal favor from me to
you. I'll make it quick. It won't hurt a bit.

BUFFY
Wrong. It's gonna hurt a lot.

UST galore!🙂

2. What is your favourite Spike vs. Buffy fight?

In "Smashed".

3. Did anyone convert you to Spike/Buffy, or did you start shipping it on your own? Have you converted anyone to Spike/Buffy?

I think I became a shipper after "Intervention". I started looking for BtVS stuff online, because I wanted to talk about my experience.

4. Was Spike ever really a Scooby? Will he be one in season 9?

He was on the verge of becoming a Scoobie in the end of season 7. I'd love to see him more in Buffy, Willow and Xander's company in season 9.

5. Do you think we'll ever get a canonical (in text) clarification as to whether or not Buffy meant her "I love you", or do you think Joss will keep us guessing for ever and ever and ever?

No. Joss loves when people argue about his characters. He'll never clarify Buffy's "I love you". He'll never clarify how much under the influence Buffy was during the space-frak. He hates definitive answers.

1. What is your favorite unintentionally shippy moment? (you know, an unthinking or accidental admission of how close they are?)

In Season 2, when Spike first saw Buffy dancing in the Bronze. It was exactly like what Angel said about falling in love with Buffy the first moment that he laid eyes on her.

2. What is your favorite Spike vs. Buffy fight?

Their very first fight in "School Hard," when Buffy totally underestimated Spike's fighting ability and came very close to dying for her mistake.

3. Did anyone convert you to Spike/Buffy, or did you start shipping it on your own? Have you converted anyone to Spike/Buffy?

I saw the connection between them in the very first episode that I ever saw (Once More With Feeling) I never saw it in that way or to that degree with Angel or Riley.

4. Was Spike ever really a Scooby? Will he be one in season 9?

Spike never was, and I seriously doubt that he ever will be a true member of the Scoobie gang. The closest that he ever came was in the summer between Seasons 5 and 6, while Buffy was dead. He was never accepted then as a part of the group (Xander said later that he "never lost track of the fact that he was a monster, a soulless THING...") That's the way that they saw him, and that view never changed, even after he got his soul back. It's pretty appropriate, however, that he isn't actually part of the gang, because, ultimately, just like he said about Buffy, Spike always winds up fighting alone. It's what all true heroes and champions do. Becoming a member of a group, any group, only detracts from Spike's personality and way of accomplishing things.

5. Do you think we'll ever get a canonical (in text) clarification as to whether or not Buffy meant her "I love you", or do you think Joss will keep us guessing for ever and ever and ever?

Absolutely not. We'll never get that any more than we were ever allowed to have any kind of decent Buffy/Spike reunion in Season 8, or to see the entire group's reaction to the aftermath of the final battle in Season 7. Those are things that, for some reaqson or other, Joss just refuses to illustrate.

As much as we hate to admit it, Spuffy as a relationship was doomed from its very inception (don't feel too bad, though, because Bangel is just as doomed, if not more so) It doesn't really matter, though, because Joss will never allow the Spuffy/Bangel issue to be settled.

1. What is your favorite unintentionally shippy moment? (you know, an unthinking or accidental admission of how close they are?)

The first thing that popped into my mind was "I can be alone with you here."

2. What is your favourite Spike vs. Buffy fight?

Yeah, I'm going with Smashed here. They were both right and they both knew it. And the punches helped bring the building down.

3. Did anyone convert you to Spike/Buffy, or did you start shipping it on your own? Have you converted anyone to Spike/Buffy?

I was a Spuffy shipper from the start. I saw Something Blue and I thought "OH MY GOD THEY LOOK SO CUTE TOGETHER" and then Out of My Mind happened and I was like "OH MY GOD!!!!! YES!!!!" I was SO excited for the Spuffy storyline to unfold.

4. Was Spike ever really a Scooby? Will he be one in season 9?

You know, I was thinking about this yesterday while doing my re-watch. I watched Hell's Bells-Grave yesterday (yes, I was a busy little bee), and it struck me as odd that Spike was at the Xanya wedding... and Buffy told him he had "every right to be there." Xander HATED Spike and best I could tell before Entropy, Anya didn't really care either way. It kinda felt like they were trying to say he had the right to be there because it was a Scooby wedding and he was a Scooby but I don't think it worked... I don't think he was ever a Scooby, no. I think he probably was in Buffy's eyes in seasons 6 and 7, but not to anyone else... not even Spike to an extent...

5. Do you think we'll ever get a canonical (in text) clarification as to whether or not Buffy meant her "I love you", or do you think Joss will keep us guessing for ever and ever and ever?

As much as I hate to say I've grown cynical of shippy things in my Whedonworks... I have. I think it would be very much a Joss thing to keep us guessing for ever and ever and ever. But I like to pretend maybe not so here's hoping for some season 9 clarification and discussion between Spuffy of that scene.

1. What is your favorite unintentionally shippy moment? (you know, an unthinking or accidental admission of how close they are?)

Their scenes in Becoming: Part Two. I loved how they teamed up to bring down Angelus & Drusilla. It was hesitent, but very interesting to watch their first team dynamic.

2. What is your favourite Spike vs. Buffy fight?

Tho I do agree that the fight scene in Smashed was b*, I will have to go with The Harsh Light of Day. I loved Spike being arrogant while they went back & forth. Pretty cool scene.

3. Did anyone convert you to Spike/Buffy, or did you start shipping it on your own? Have you converted anyone to Spike/Buffy?

I thought that Buffy & Angel were cute, but for some reason I just couldnt get seriously into shipping them. The minute Spike came in & started sharing scenes with Buffy, I was sold & loved watching their interaction, hoping it would eventually turn into more (which of course it did =D ). I have converted a friend of mine into a Spuffy shipper, but she isnt really a fanatic. I tried to convert my mom, but sadly, shes thinks Buffy belongs with Angel =( .

4. Was Spike ever really a Scooby? Will he be one in season 9?

IMO, he was & he wasnt. They started getting used to him for info & not really caring if he got dusted, then actually started really needing him. It does go both ways IMO. During the time he stayed with Xander in S4, I thought he was an unspoken member, but that died down. Id say he was part of them at the beginning of S6 when he helped the Scoobies with Dawn & slaying, but thats about it.

5. Do you think we'll ever get a canonical (in text) clarification as to whether or not Buffy meant her "I love you", or do you think Joss will keep us guessing for ever and ever and ever?

Well, Id love for Joss to give a clarification, but I am not holding my breath unless he allows Spuffy to get closer, possibly romantically or just discussing their past as deep, close friends, then I cant really say. We shall c.

1. What is your favorite unintentionally shippy moment? (you know, an unthinking or accidental admission of how close they are?)

I always enjoy those scenes in Superstar when Spike kinda flirts with Buffy in the graveyard and she doesn't seem completely reviled by it 😉

2. What is your favourite Spike vs. Buffy fight?

Smashed - so vicious and talky and sexy!

3. Did anyone convert you to Spike/Buffy, or did you start shipping it on your own? Have you converted anyone to Spike/Buffy?

No, came to Spuffy on my own. I enjoyed Buffy and Angel while they were a thing but just assumed that it was completely over once he left town. Didn't much fancy Buffy and Riley and always really liked Spike and thought they had some moments of magic in season four and it grew from there. I remeber when I saw Out of My Mind for the first time, I was like "I knew it!" when Spike realised he was in love with Buffy. I've never converted anyone per say, but my sister and my good friend both of whom I've badgered into watching the show, both started off saying that they thought Buffy and Angel were pretty unbeatable romantically ended up preferring Spuffy.

4. Was Spike ever really a Scooby? Will he be one in season 9?

I think the only time Spike was really a Scooby was when Buffy was dead. I think he wanted to be one - especially during season five but then after being left out of the ressurection spell I don't think he ever really coverted such a position again. He was always first and foremost Team Buffy. Going forward to season Nine, I think Spike is probably in his best position yet to be welcomed fully as a Scooby but I always think that part of Spike's appeal to Buffy is that he's not one of the gang, that he's separate and something she doesn't have to share with everyone - So I expect that dynamic to continue and for Spike to remain an outsider.

5. Do you think we'll ever get a canonical (in text) clarification as to whether or not Buffy meant her "I love you", or do you think Joss will keep us guessing for ever and ever and ever?

Probably not. Do we ever really need it? I don't. I quile enjoy all the guess work with Spike and Buffy. I like that there are no easy answers with them and that everything is open to interpretation. That being said, I do enjoy those rare occasions that Joss does give clarification and it would be great if we did get canonical confirmation someday. Maybe we will - I mean, unless Spike and Buffy never ever discuss the past, some things are bound to get raised eventually, aren't they?

1. What is your favorite unintentionally shippy moment? (you know, an unthinking or accidental admission of how close they are?)

Oh man. My favorite would probably be in "Checkpoint," when Buffy takes Joyce and Dawn to Spike's crypt because he's the only person strong enough to protect them. It really showed Buffy's level of trust in Spike.

But then, there's "After Life," where they just stare into each other eyes. Maybe that's not so accidental though, lol.

2. What is your favourite Spike vs. Buffy fight?

Toss up between their fights in FFL and their fight in "Smashed." I can't pick.

3. Did anyone convert you to Spike/Buffy, or did you start shipping it on your own? Have you converted anyone to Spike/Buffy?

No one converted me. I fell in love with Spuffy and started shipping them all on my own. 🙂 I don't think I've converted people, but I know I've gotten people (non-shippers and people who were unsure) to see that Buffy not only loved Spike, but was in love with Spike. I guess that's my mission in life, lol! 😀

4. Was Spike ever really a Scooby? Will he be one in season 9?

Honestly, I don't think so. He did help the Scoobies after Buffy died, but I don't think the gang (particularly Xander) really accepted him in their group. Spike really got that message in "After Life."

In season 9, part of me wants Spike to be a Scooby (finally get that acceptance), but the other part doesn't. Like Transquillity said, I like how Spike's the outsider and separate from the Scoobies. It's part of his appeal, especially with Buffy, and one of the reasons why he's her "dark place."

5. Do you think we'll ever get a canonical (in text) clarification as to whether or not Buffy meant her "I love you", or do you think Joss will keep us guessing for ever and ever and ever?

Do we need clarification, lol? I mean it was pretty clear to me that she meant it 100%. 😀 What I would like clarification over is how Buffy found out Spike was alive and her reaction to it. If Joss keeps me guessing over that, I'll be disappointed because I think that's too big of an issue to leave to the imagination.

Someone sent us an email to say

After yesterday's Dark Horse panel at ECCC in Seattle, Scott Allie told me Season 9's mini-series will definitely include Willow, but may not include Spike -- because Spike will be so busy in the Buffy title there may be no need/room for a Spike mini-series.
