Spuffy #6 - General Discussion

Status
Not open for further replies.
I'm thinking about the first question...the best wordless moment between them. Honestly, that's the whole thing that I love about them. It isn't so much what they say, it's the spaces between the words, the looks of total understanding. I feel like their eyes say so much.

I don't think I can choose a favorite, but one just popped into my head that made me smile so I'll share,

In the episode where Buffy turns invisible in season 6, the beginning she's in the kitchen and tells spike not to call her "luv", and he gets closer and closer asking her what names he should call her.."pet?" etc... she picks up a spatula to try and ward him off (sort of) and he grabs it and says, "uh uh, this flapjack's not ready to be flipped yet." and she says, "what the hell does that mean?" then gives him a look... that look. I love.

Many fans have pointed out, that if Buffy did in fact allow Spike to tie her up and/or handcuff her, then why would she have told him she could "never" trust him? Though suggestive of the fact, this comment does not prove anything. Or, perhaps the question should be; why would she allow herself to be a vulnerable position with someone dangerous, someone she didn't trust? See, I believe Buffy did trust Spike, and I believe she allowed him to tie her up and handcuff her.* Why? Spike was right all along; Buffy had a death wish, and using her relationship with Spike - who could have seriously hurt or killed her - was a way for her to flirt with death. In hoping for it, she purposely put herself in compromising situations where she knew she could get hurt. It's classic behavior for someone who"˜s depressed, which of course Buffy was.

(*Re: Trust: See, Buffy's actions in the later part of this episode prove that she did in fact trust Spike, contrary to what she says earlier. After she thinks she'd killed Katrina, Spike tells her he's going to take her home to her bed and says he'll "sort this out. Trust me." She doesn't answer, but the next time we see her she is in fact in her bed, so we can determine that she did in fact initially allow Spike to take her home and handle it. Not to mention that in her dreamscape, she fantasizes about him in her bed, which surely suggests intimacy and trust.)

You have been in my mind apparently. I have been thinking about starting a new thread just to discuss whether she did trust him or not. She says in Dead Things that she doesn't, but then she trusts him with the lives of her mom, Dawn and herself - which is serious trust. She can't be distrusting his love for her, i.e. along the lines of not trusting him to break her heart, because, even if she did love him at this point, she has to be able to see and know that his beyond loyal and his love for her will not waver. So...what's with her saying she doesn't trust him? It makes my brain hurt, because in every other way, she does things that show her trust...😕 Help me😱

I'm new to this... for some reason I only recently jumped on board the buffy train, but I just got all seven seasons and have been watching obsessively... I still have a few more episodes of 7 left... this is all to say, take this for what it's worth, which may not be anything but...

I think the thing is she does trust him. When she says she doesn't what she's doing is trying to convince herself. She judges her feelings as wrong and she tries to deny them.

anyway, that's what I think.

Buffy and trust is such a loaded issue!

She says she loves Angel but doesn't trust him (she repeats that sentiment in season 8 too) and she also says that she doesn't trust Spike enough to love him when clearly she does have some measure of trust for him - she trusts him to look after her sister and she puts herself in the vunerable position of having sex with him (that involves mild bondage at times). That requires trust. After he gets the soul that trust grows even more.

The trouble with Buffy is that she wants to be in love with Angel. He is her fantasy guy; their love is is mythic, it's forbidden, its so huge that its a destructive force. All her dreams about love and romance and happily-ever-after are tied up in the fantasy that she has constructed around Angel. She has decided she will never love anyone more than that ever, and she's sticking to it come hell or high water. And, ironically, while he is not available to fill any meaningful place in her life the fantasy is allowed to flourish and grow even more powerful. It's a weird situation - the more Angel is absent from Buffy's life, the stronger the Angel-chains around her heart become.

Spike on the other hand, she can't help but trust, even if it is unwillingly. He has helped her out when she's needed it most; he's demonstrated a capacity to choose between right and wrong (when it suits him). She doesn't want to trust him, but she does. Simple as that. Spike is like rust - he's working away at those chains slowly but surely. During season seven I think he made great progress - got through some real big chains for sure - maybe even freed her heart entirely. But then he died and he didn't contact her after he came back and she retreated to her safe fantasy again and willingly put those chains back on (as well as a few "angry at Spike" chains for good measure).

I have occasionally wondered if Buffy is annoyed that it is Spike who constantly challenges the status quo and not her precious Angel. Angel, her fantasy guy, doesn't do change. He doesn't challenge boundaries or restrictions. He accepts the limitations placed on them and just another burden that he must bear in an effort to achieve redemption. Spike of course is the complete opposite. I often wonder if Buffy wishes that it was the other way round?

ps: My homework is almost ready to post 🙂

Awesome post! :)
Buffy tended to aggravate me quite a lot in season five and six with the whole Spike ordeal. Even after he got his soul she was so resistant with him. I think Buffy fell in love with Spike truly the night before the final battle. She had always "loved" him to some extent, but actually falling in love, deeply and madly, didn't happen until that night he just held her. No messing around, no kissing, nothing. Just holding her. I want to believe he believed her, but I'm just not sure. I think he did, but wanted her to realize she had never truly shown her love for him by saying "No you don't...". It just represented how she was so resilient to admit she loved him, which I always thought was really dumb. Seriously, would it have killed her to show him some affection from time to time without being disgusted with herself? He wasn't THAT bad. He loved her so much. He would've died for her and her friends. That's a noble man.

I agree. I feel exactly the same way sometimes. the feeling's lessened over time... but they're still there.

IMO, Spike definitely believed her. His eyes, that little smile...the hands on fire! :)
Buffy's been through SO much in her life, especially with issues of love. I can't find fault her for being hesitant with Spike, or anyone, for that matter. 🙁 Spike's been through a lot too, which is why I understand how he falls in love so quickly. He needs to. They both have flaws when it comes to love, IMO. That's personally why I ship 'em in the end. 😉

I agree with Tranquility's post, I like the way you put it 🙂

Sorry to spam you again with a poll, but in the SpoilerTV competition (I posted the link few days ago), Buffy & Spike are one of the 32 couples nominated 🙂 Please vote for them in this poll, they're against Booth & Brennan from Bones :

it sucks they did that. they can't win against B&B
1: What is the best wordless Buffy and Spike moment (you know what i mean - a shared look or glance, a reaction - but with no words)

"Showtime", hands down. When Buffy rescues him, there is so much love in her eyes.

2: Imagine Spike and Buffy are going on a date. What are they gonna do?

Catch a movie, have a couple drinks, maybe some slaying.

3: In the episode Crush Spike wears clothes other than his traditional ensemble – any theories as to why?

The same reason he changed his shirt in "Beneath Me" - to transform himself into the kind of man that he felt Buffy 'deserved.' Someone human. Spike always believed he had to change for her to love him.

4: Do you think Buffy knows about Spike's poetic inclinations?

Not sure.

5: If you're into the comics - How are you feeling about the recent announcements regarding season nine and the possible implications for Spuffy?

I'm super-excited and can't wait for Season 9.

The Back Steps has gone a bit quiet....

Here is My Homework:

First some "Show"

1. I've had the picture below saved on my computer for years "“ (I think) way before season 8 was ever mentioned. I suppose this is the kind of drawings I'd like to see in the comic "“ clean and adult looking. I must admit that I find Georges Jeanty's style a tad naà¯ve, although he got better towards the end of the season. For more work from this artist (Grant Gould "“ he does artwork from various fandoms) see his gallery here: http://grantgoboom.deviantart.com/gallery/

2. One of my favourite sites on the internet is Tea at the Ford. It was one of the first places I discovered when I was first submerging myself into the online fandom. It is basically an archive of mailing list conversations dating back to the last few seasons of both Buffy and Angel. It was the regulars from this list that created the excellent faux Thesis on William the Bloody by Lydia Chalmers (There is a PDF link somewhere but I couldn't find it) And there is also some truly wonderful meta and discussion about our favourite couple too.

And now some "Tell":

3. Episode discussion - After Life

After Life is one of my favourite Spuffy-centric episode. Odd choice I know, but I've always had a real love for this one because each of the Buffy and Spike scenes has a genuine beauty about it; the words are lovely.

After Life, for me, is all about the three Buffy and Spike conversations:

Conversation one
Dawn brings Buffy home. They stand out the front of the house and Dawn says, with a touch of relief, "You're back home. We're all okay now". Buffy hasn't been back for a moment and she's already got the weight of expectation on her shoulders "“she's going to make everything okay again, for everyone else. Dawn takes her round the house, is trying to comfort her by showing her that things are still pretty much the way they've always been except that they're not "“ Willow and Tara live there, furniture has been moved, the bright lights hurt her eyes"¦
After cleaning her up and trying to make her laugh Dawn begins to get frustrated at Buffy's detachment. "Buffy? You wanna, like, stop? . . . We can ... we can sit down and talk." But Buffy doesn't want to do that. She asks what else is different only to be told that Giles has left too.

Spike arrives. He's pissed with Dawn "“ so pissed that he momentarily forgets that he last saw the Buffy Bot in bits and pieces. He watches Buffy walk down the stairs and realises the truth. Dawn observes that she's "been through a lot" but she's "Okay". Spike is astounded, momentarily lost for words. He stares at Buffy in wonder and awe. Buffy gets self conscious; such scrutiny will do that to ya. She buttons her unbuttoned shirt quickly. The buttoning of the shirt is there mainly to highlight Buffy's injured hands but it also works as a gesture of awareness. She's aware of Spike as a male, and an attractive one at that. She self-consciously buttons the shirt; it's a classically female reaction.

Spike notices Buffy's gouged knuckles. Dawn doesn't know how they got like that.

SPIKE: I do; clawed her way out of a coffin, that's how. Isn't that right?
BUFFY: Yeah. That's ... what I had to do.
SPIKE: Done it myself.

So the point of connection is there. He is the only one in her world who could possibly have any understanding of what it means to die and then live again. He is death walking. And that's even more alluring than Buffy would ever admit

He sends Dawn to get first aid supplies and takes Buffy to sit down. He sits opposite her and holds her damaged hands gently. Finally, Buffy asks a question to help her get her bearings.

BUFFY: How long was I gone?
SPIKE: Hundred forty-seven days yesterday. Uh ... hundred forty-eight today. 'Cept today doesn't count, does it?
SPIKE: How long was it for you ... where you were?
BUFFY: Longer.

I love how Spike knows the exact amount of days without any hesitation! And I love that Spike shows a deep concern for Buffy. He empathises with her plight; he's willing to tend her wounded hands, he's quiet and he doesn't demand anything of her. The calmness is destroyed with the entrance of Willow, Tara, Xander and Anya. They barge into the house. Demand her presence and then throw a barrage of questions at her. This scene is shot in a very particular way, the camera low and looking upwards to emphasise the domineering presence of the Scoobies over the besieged Buffy. Dawn tells them to back off but they are insistent; they want thanks and gratitude and assurance that they were right to bring her back. They want Buffy to be "okay". They don't want zombie!Buffy or Stange!Buffy on their hands "“ they want Normal!Buffy and they want her so they'll all be okay again.

Spike leaves upon the intrusion "“ he stands outside the house crying. They're not quite tears of joy though. Confusion tempered with relief maybe? But he's got more realistic expectations than the Scoobies "“ they only want to believe that she is fine; they quickly pooh-pooh any suggestion that she's not okay. They just don't want to hear it. But Spike knows better, oh yeah - That's the thing about magic; there's always consequences.

Conversation Two:

A little while later Buffy and her friends are at the Magic Box researching their latest demon foe. Buffy's heart is not in it. She misses Giles. She leaves to go patrolling. She doesn't want their company and she doesn't give Dawn so much as a backward glance as she leaves "“ she's not connected to life (of which Dawn is representative). Buffy would rather be walking around in a dark graveyard than with her friends. And yet she's not too keen on the actual patrolling either "“ She ends up at Spike's crypt. She is drawn to death. Spike is surprised to see her, makes a lame joke and looks kind of awkward. They compare hand wounds "“ it's another reminder that these two have certain things in common. Spike makes another attempt at humour with no more success than the last. Buff sits though; she's in no hurry to leave. She doesn't need the conversation. She needs the companionable solitude. But Spike also gives her something else - an apology:

SPIKE: "I do remember what I said. The promise, to protect her. If I had done that, even if I didn't make it - you wouldn't have had to jump. But I want you to know I did save you. Not when it counted, of course, but after that. Every night after that. I'd see it all again, do something different. Faster or more clever, you know? Dozens of times, lots of different ways. Every night I save you."

He expresses regret that she had to die and that he didn't do enough to stop it from happening. I think it is the most consideration that anyone has given Buffy since she came back. It's not a selfish sentiment either "“ none of this has anything to do with Spike wanting to be the big hero or anything like that; It's all about Spike wishing that Buffy never had to die in the first place.

Conversations three:
They work out what the bad guy is and Buffy defeats it. Just like old times. The Scoobies gather at the magic box and Buffy steels herself to say the much expected "˜thank-you' to them for resurrecting them but she never actually says the words "“ she says tells them what they want to hear (that she was in a "˜hell dimension' and that she "˜can't tell them what it means' to her to have been bought out.) And it's a weird combination of feelings Buffy's experiencing here. On one hand she's royally pissed off that they have bought her back, but on the other she doesn't want them to know the reality as that would hurt their feelings. Then on top of that she feels like she ought to be grateful that she's alive again and that once she comes to terms with everything then there will be no need for them to ever know the truth. It has shades of her inferiority complex about having a superiority complex.

Things are not as they should be; she gets no joy or comfort from the group hug. She doesn't belong. She goes outside to the blinding sunshine and finds "˜death' waiting in the shadow of the building. Death, in the form of Spike is sitting there in the shade, just out of reach of the harsh light of day. He offers to leave but Buffy tells him that she can be alone with him there. Again Spike expresses real concern for Buffy:

SPIKE: Buff? ... Slayer? Are you okay?
BUFFY: I'm here. I'm good.
SPIKE: Buffy, if you're in ... if you're in pain ... or if you need anything... or if I can do anything for you...

She says there is nothing, he attempts to connect with her over the shared pain of torture but Buffy cuts him off. She tells him the truth about everything "“ about her being happy and at peace, about being complete and finished, about the suspicion that she was in heaven. And then she shares the resentment she feels for her friends, and that she is literally surviving on a moment to moment basis. Once it's out, Buffy gets self-conscious and dismayed that she's unburdened herself to Spike of all people. She warns him not to tell anyone else. And she walks away leaving death behind.

Now some people say this means nothing; that Buffy is just "whispering in a dead man's ear". But for me, I can't get past the fact that Buffy chooses Spike to finally unburden to. She doesn't choose her friends "“ they were the ones who bought her out of heaven against her will; as if she'd tell them! She doesn't choose Dawn "“ because Dawn is her younger sister and that would be unfair to her but more importantly Dawn is representative of Life and you can't really tell life that, in essence, you'd rather be dead. No, Buffy chooses Spike because he's been where she's been; he's died and been revived. He is death personified and Buffy feels, however unwillingly, an affinity with him. He was not involved in the resurrection. He has faithfully counted the days of her absence. He innately understands that her resurrection is not all good and he has been apologetic about his inability to prevent her from having to make the ultimate sacrifice.

And that's why I love After Life. I believe this is the beginning of Buffy and Spike in earnest "“ yes we've had amazing moments leading up to this and he groundwork for their relationship has been prepared beautifully. But now we have Buffy actively seeking him out. We have them with shared experiences. We have the beginnings of a tangible connection, of a friendship almost. Spike, for her, is something separate from the Scoobies and I really believe that this is part of his ongoing appeal. She doesn't have to share him, explain him, justify him or force him to fit with the gang and that makes him exponentially more attractive. 🙂

Brilliant!!! Exactly why I love "After Life" too! :)
For me, I think, while it has been so frustrating to watch buffy's continuing denial of her feelings this first time through, I have a feeling watching it again won't be so bad. already I feel i'm gaining a better understanding. thanks to you guys.

I feel sorry for both of them - they really both have terrible experiences and are like the black&white reflections of love. Buffy, IMO, shut down emotionally when it came to giving up her heart to another post Angel, even if she did not see it in herself. And Spike, I don't think anything touched so much about this character as his confession to Buffy how he, in all his life, had never been close to anyone. The only person who he really found love with was her mother and that was destroyed as well when he tried to save her out of his love.

Thanks for this. I've never heard of this site before. *goes to check it out*

I've read the fake thesis, and it's quite amusing. You said you can't find the link? I remember printing it out a long, long time ago...perhaps I could find it.

*sigh*
It's never more apparent how much Spike understands Buffy than in this episode. He just gets her. To her core. He knows what she's been though.
SPIKE: I do; clawed her way out of a coffin, that's how. Isn't that right?
BUFFY: Yeah. That's ... what I had to do.
SPIKE: Done it myself.
This could be a beautiful scene - it only the glaring continuity error didn't bug me so much. Spike didn't claw himself out of his coffin, if I remember correctly. Dru sired him, and he ran off with her - right? We can assume he was gone a while based on his mother's worried reaction.

But, regardless, the look on James' face when he sees Buffy for the first time on the stairs? Absolutely beautiful. It's a look of pure wonder if ever where was one.
SPIKE: “I do remember what I said. Every night I save you.”
A know a lot of fans think this line is cheesy - but it's the opposite. I feel for Spike so much in this scene. He blames himself for Buffy having to jump. The way he sees it, if he had succeeded in saving Dawn - and fulfilling his promise to protect her 'till the end of the world" - Buffy's wouldn't have had to jump. So, it's not that he wished he's saved Buffy (he knows Buffy can take care of herself), it's that he feels responsible. When the Doctor throws him off the cliff in The Gift, he falls to the ground, cracking to ground beneath him, which literally swallows him up (mirroring how he probably felt). I love the idea, too, of Spike dreaming on her every night. It's romantic - and I'm not the romantic type, so the fact that I like this line is telling.

It’s not a selfish sentiment either – none of this has anything to do with Spike wanting to be the big hero or anything like that; It’s all about Spike wishing that Buffy never had to die in the first place.

I agree about him not wanting to be the Hero. He knows Buffy's no damsel and he trusts ans respects her judgement and her choices. And you're right, but it's not just about him not wanting Buffy to die - I think he wishes he could have done it in her place.
Things are not as they should be; she gets no joy or comfort from the group hug. She doesn’t belong. She goes outside to the blinding sunshine and finds ‘death’ waiting in the shadow of the building.
Also worth noting - as she does later in As You Were - she leaves Spike (death) in the dark and walks into the light. This is intentional. We are supposed to make the connection that Spike = Dark and Buffy = Light. Just as these two have their own theme (Fire) they are also each other's Shadow Selves.
Now some people say this means nothing; that Buffy is just “whispering in a dead man’s ear”. But for me, I can’t get past the fact that Buffy chooses Spike to finally unburden to. How people could say her confession to Spike means nothing are morons. It means everything.Buffy very intentionality chose to tell Spike because she knew he would never tell a soul. Just as she very intentionality told him she loved him in Chosen. Buffy doesn't throw words around. She has conviction and lives in truth.

I like what you've said about Buffy relating to Spike because he's dead and she feels like a walking ghost.
And that’s why I love After Life. Exactly. She can be alone with him - and that explains everything. :)

Spike still could have been buried. Dru could have killed him then buried him just for funzies. After all, it may have taken a while for him to wake up after being sired. What better way to protect his body than to throw it in a grave. 😀

Also, Dru's crazy, so...😀

In Reunion - the episode of Angel when Dru re-sires Darla, Angel says this:

Angel: "Drusilla will want to put the body in the ground."
Wesley: "Angel, are you certain about this? A burial isn't necessary for a newly made vampire to..."
Angel: "It would be for Drusilla. She's a classicist."

So I think, from that we can infer that Dru would have gone to all the effort of burying Spike in a coffin six feet under, particularly as it seems it was the first time that Dru had 'made' a companion and specifically that she made Spike to be hers as Angel was Darla's.

What's your policy on late homework? 😱

Hee. I've got fic recs and something cool to 'show'!

I'm a relatively new fan of BtVS and Spuffy compared to a lot of you, so I'm still working my way through the fandom, particularly through 'classic' fics at the moment. Someone recommended the writer Ariane to me a while ago, but unfortunately a lot of the links on her website are not working anymore. (I think the site was hosted on geocities or something way back when...) I was really bummed at first, but in the last couple weeks or so I've realized that you can use The Way Back Machine to access most of them!

Just head to the Way Back Machine, type in http://www.arianewrites.com/DarkDreamsFIC.html in the box, and the links work again!

The Destinations of the Heart series is really amazing. I highly recommend it. I haven't read all of her fics, but Ariane is wonderful so far and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend just about everything. 😀

You can use The Way Back Machine for a lot of other old, inactive Spuffy sites too. You won't be able to access everything for some sites, (I tried to go on the Buffy & Spike Diaries fanfic archive, but the fics won't show up!) but it's great fun to browse anyway.

These sites seem to work really well:

There's a lot of fics that can't be found elsewhere hosted on these sites. If you're a fic-lover like me and you're always looking for great fics to read, you can use the Way Back Machine to play around and find them. Happy reading. 🙂

A+ for your homework (I'm soft - I don't mind late H/W plus I love the Wayback Machine!)
This could be a beautiful scene - it only the glaring continuity error didn't bug me so much. Spike didn't claw himself out of his coffin, if I remember correctly. Dru sired him, and he ran off with her - right? We can assume he was gone a while based on his mother's worried reaction.

Maybe Spike actually did have to claw himself out of a coffin. Remember, when she turned Darla back into a vampire, she buried her so that she would have to do basically that same thing. Angel even commented on Dru's adherence to the "tradition" of the vampire resurrection involving rising from the grave. The fact that William's mother hadn't been told that he was dead indicates that Dru buried or otherwise disposed of the body herself, then simply waited for her "baby" to be born.

I love the Wayback Machine. I'm so glad it's there - a lot of older fic would have been lost otherwise.

There's something wrong with the BS Diaries site, which is a shame because I can remember when it was active, and it had some good stuff posted. I know Cordykitten on LJ tried to contact the owner to find out why it's there but not really there but I don't think she had any joy.

Vampire's Kiss is another Spuffy archive that works on the Wayback Machine.
