Help Spuffy fic recommendations

I think that just googling 'spuffy Recs ' should give you access to lots because I think it's very popular.

These are some of my favourite stories on EF, I usally like a range from dark to very very dark 🙂

Pet by Sigyn (Adults Only) - very very dark
Darkest Dawn by Sigyn - Dawn as vampire, also vey dark
A Different Kind of Hell by OffYourBird
Ars Poetica by Lirazel
Being Somebody Else by Eowyn315

I just read this and I think it is wonderful. I loved the poetry in it, especially the poem by Emily Dickinson.

Thank you for the reccomendation and by the way....where can I find that motorbike fanfic 🙂 ?

It was beautifully written, she used the poetry really well. I always worry about recommending things because we don't all have the same taste, so glad you liked it. Maybe that motobike fanfic was wishful thinking 😀

Okay, I will write it myself then. Might be years to come though. If ever. ;-)

I ain't gettin any older . . . 😀 Which means I've got plenty of time to read, so if you've got any recs, let me know

Pet by Sigyn (Adults Only) - very very dark

I have read this one as well. Oh my god, this is scary. And very intense.
I have read everything else Sigyn has posted on EF. She writes wonderful fanfic. My favorite is (at the moment) Slayer Rising but I recommend Attainathon, Otherwise and Immortal as well. If you are looking for a very romantic fanfic than you might like If I Saw You In Heaven as well.

Taste certainly varies greatly with fanfics. Characterisation often isn't great. Not that I'm saying it is easy, I certainly wouldn't want to try my hand at writing fics, but it is tough to do it really well and there are a lot of fics out there. But sometimes the story idea is nice enough that the writing quality doesn't bother you anyway, so many factors can influence how you judge a fic. Because of the very nature of fanfic, people often liking exploring something that isn't canon compliant, some common themes/story angles might appeal greatly to some people and be a real turn off for others. I personally can roll with different ideas/takes that stray quite far off the path of the series and change characterisation a lot, but if they are going to do that I prefer them to tangent early. I get irritated with fics writing that the soul isn't necessary if they tangent from late S6 onwards and especially when it is presented that way after Spike is souled. So I generally read less later season fics.

I've only read the After All series from Sigyn, which ends with Pet I think. I thought they were good, the dark doesn't bother me in those (I've read worse! :s), but I wasn't overly keen on the way she constantly had the characters talking insightfully about themselves. Not in terms of whether I agreed or not, I thought some points were interesting, but because it just felt unnatural and like the purpose was just to constantly push the author's character analyses at the reader.

Without any idea of preferences it is really hard to recommend fics. I've read a whole ton of the things. 🙂

I love Sigyn's work, and have read Attainathon and Otherwise, but I'll definitely give the others a read. Though I'm not a fan of Crossovers, so I might give Immortal a miss.

@Stoney I have read thousands, and the quality is definitely hit and miss. There are only a few things that put me off, and one of the sillier ones is if Spike uses the word 'Cor' 😱 I cannot stand that word coming from Spike, it makes me think of Marr Bloody Poppins and I think he's going to burst into a chorus of Chim Chiminey 😡 Did he ever say 'Cor' in the show?

Ha! I know exactly what you mean and it's used equally in moments of pain or passion, usually with a good 'blimey' added to it, lol. And nope, I can't think of a time he actually says it on the show. 🙂

Writers often struggle with voicing Spike without going to real extremes on the cockney twangs. It bugs me too when a story has Spike unsouled and souled within it and they are incapable of writing him with differentiation. If you can't do it, don't do it. Late season fics really are a hard sell with me for sure. Do you have any specific quirks/preferences? I'm a total sucker for a nice bit of Spike/Dawn friendship thrown in.

The Spike/Dawn friendship is great, a real plus in a fanfic, showing a kinder side to Spike. I've read some excellent fics set in S2 but showing how Dawn changed the story and helped to create early Spuffy.

I'm also a sucker for time-travel fic, were one or other goes back in time to change something and ends up changing Spuffy. I also enjoy when Buffy goes back to Victorian England and meets William.

I also quite like when Spike and Angel are friendly. They always have a lot of banter and they make me laugh. I don't like it when Angelus is the BB. I've also read a few were Willow is horrible but Tara becomes Spuffy's best friend, and that never feels right to me.

Have you ever written fanfic?

Without any idea of preferences it is really hard to recommend fics. I've read a whole ton of the things. 🙂

I prefer fanfic that stays as Close to Canon as possible and is set during the series. I don`t really like pre- or post-series, alternate realities, dimension-travelling or complete changes in characters. If there is anything you would like to recommend, I would be very happy to read it.

Though I'm not a fan of Crossovers, so I might give Immortal a miss.

Please don`t. I didn`t know Torchwood at all and to me Jack was just a new and very likeable character. And he generously steps aside as soon as Spike appears on the scene 😉

I also enjoy when Buffy goes back to Victorian England and meets William.

@Priceless: Have you read "Forward to Time Past" by Unbrideld Brunette ? It is a three-parter but only the first part is about Buffy meeting William in Victorian England. You can skip the second and the third part because they are nothing compared to the first part. Especially the third part is very out of character for Spike, I think. But the first part is really nice and very romantic.

@flow I have read Forward to Time Past and even though I don't remember it well, I think I enjoyed it. I shall give Immortal a try as you recommend it and I like Sigyn's work

Ones that stay close to canon are difficult as most fics are trying to explore something different really. Which ones have you read/enjoyed most that meet this?

A great deal of Spuffy fics set during the series ignore the canon established need for Spike to get his soul. If you are happy to work with that then there are probably more that I can give which follow canon somewhat (probably not many that are PG!), but obviously it affects canon characterisations by not developing how Spike needs his soul and through having Buffy not care about it either. A lot of do-overs fit that kind of feel. Or there are ones that rewrite a season like Et Lux in Tenebris Lucet by enigmaticblue, changing a specific aspect and then running with the alternative. Have you read A Gem of a Soul by spuffy luvr? That follows a lot of the overall canon events. I remember A Promise to His Lady by Mary followed on from the end of S5 but I read this one when I first started reading fics so long ago that I can't remember how well it fits to canon heading on into the S6 events (which I think began in the sequel Awakenings). Then there are little shorts that drop into canon more easily like Fall to Pieces by Rikki_oko (a oneshot that was intended to be expanded but I don't think ever was), or 100 Strokes by Lirazel, but I don't read many of these.

If you fancy the risk of them, there are a couple of post series ones that tend to spring to mind when people ask for recs. Obviously they have the advantage that they don't go off on a tangent mid show and disrupt canon/characterisation by default. There is The Colour of Devotion by Rikki_oko which I just have a fondness for and Distress Signals by peaceheather.

I remember liking this fic, although I don't remember the different parts distinctly, it was one of those I read early on. If you like William fics, have you read Legions of True Hearts by Eurydice? As far as I remember it is set outside of Sunnydale but then the sequel, Symphony of Echoes returns to canon, well, ish because it is significantly affected by the first fic. If I'm remembering the right ones. They all end up a bit of a muddle in my head. 😀

Awwwww thank you so much...I won`t be able to stop reading now. I will go on with Et Lux In Tenebris Lucet. A Gem of a Soul seems to be really long, so that will take a while. I had read 100 Strokes before and I decided to devour Fall To Pieces before everything else because it is short. Those are actually fanfics I like very much.

I have another recommendation similar to those and also very short. It is A Brief History Of Now by Gwyneth Rhys and also Reformation by OffYourBird.

I have come across "Cor" in a fanfic as well, but i don`t even know what it means. Is it supposed to be slang ? Fanfics refer a lot to Spikes cute british accent but unfortunately that is something that is completely lost on me because he sounds like everybody else to me in the series except that he is really hard to understand. It always seems to me he speaks with a slur but that cannot have anything to do with a british accent because Giles speaks very clearly and distinct.

I have also come across several fanfics where Spike calls Tara Glinda. Did that ever happen in the series ? I cannot remember it but it struck me as odd that I have read it in different stories from different authors.

I'll be very interested to hear what you think about any of them. 🙂

Thanks for these, I haven't read either and I'll definitely add them to my pile of 'to reads'. 😀

'Cor' is an expression of surprise/amazement. It is slang, I don't think it is particular to any set area of the country but seems to be used for Spike in fanfic an awful lot. The accent JM went for is actually (my hubby says, I'm rubbish with accents) pretty generic 'British' but possibly could be more London. Sometimes fics go very cockney (which is more Dru's accent) and Molly's awful cockney accent for Spike and that isn't what he was like in the series at all I don't think.

As for Glinda, yeah, that is used often in fics and 'whelp' for Xander. I don't think either of them were used in the show though, not that I can remember.
