Spuffy Fic Recs

I finished reading "Embers" and I'm about to start rereading it. Coalitiongirl is one of my favorire writers. I adore her stories. My favs are "Rose", "Switch in Time", "Prodigal" and "Embers".

During the long waiting for season 9 "Embers" was my salvation. I know that I'll be comparing canon to that story and I'm not sure that I'll enjoy canon more than this story.

The Rose is one of my favourite fics, too. I feel like I'm due a re-read... perhaps when I'm done with Embers.

I'm going to be starting Embers either tonight or tomorrow. I'm also actively following Time's Fool by MsJane and The Shadow Gallery by viciousreject (this one's all-human. I can't resist rockstar!Spike 😛)

I love Spuffy fanfic. 😀

What's Embers? Worth reading?

Embers is a REALLY good Season 9 fic written by coalitiongirl (you can find it on her livejournal or at EF, bloodshedverse, the usual fanfic sites) and she just finished it recently! I've been following it since the beginning, and I can tell you that it's awesome. It's reallllly well written and it's kind of like the perfect Spuffy Season 9. Well, in my opinion anyway. I like my Spuffy snarky and sweet. 🙂

I just read Embers and it was really really awesome.

I think I may try "The Rose" next or possibly "A Switch in Time" when I work tomorrow.

Would start one today but I slept an amazing 3 hours last night and I think if I keep reading I may fall asleep at my desk. And they have a camera that watches me all day. Creeptastic? Yes. Effective at keeping me conscious? Also yes.

Regarding Embers, what do you like the most about the story so far? Do you feel it's in-character? What in the story would you like to see play out in actual canon?

For me, I'm only a few chapters in but I'm loving it. Coalitiongirl writes great Spuffy. She really captures the true mutual trust and affection that exists between them, but also the underyling wistfullness and desire they both share. I like the plot with the mutant vamps, and the whole just feels so real and organic - like it's really happening. This is the canon I prefer, lol. I'd die happy if I could write fic like that. For now, I'll just read as much as I can 🙂

What shall be our August story? I figure some people have already read Embers, so we should start reading a new one every month so everyone can discuss. Sound good?

I haven't got very far with Embers yet but I'm definitely enjoying it so far. I'll post more thoughts when I've read on a bit.

Perhaps we could read an older fic for August?

I like how thier dynamic has been written so well, and how, well, odd they are. They really just aren't in one place or another early on, which fits well. They never defined their relationship at any point on the show, and i like how it is kept in that in-between place - believably.

I really hope the comic writers read some of the Spuffy fics...

I'll write more later...the part above is just about the 1st 1/2 or so, and i'll add more when everyone's finished it.

I just read this story today during my first few hours at work and I loved it so much.

Like you I loved how well she writes that wistfullness. Sometimes they can just be so . . . obtuse. Is that the word I'm looking for?

They just go round and round all the time and I want to scream. 😀

This is one of the most in character fic's I've read, just based on how they act, and the fact that they are always dealing with mosters, which is overlooked a lot in fic. A lot of times it's just all about the interaction between Spike and Buffy which I don't object to. But this was like the perfect amount of plot.

And because of all the monsters and plot it was easy to show, in this story, how Buffy depends on Spike and that sometimes she needs him to tell her that she's being an idiot.

Which that may actually be one of my favorite things about him.

I loved how the author captured their dynamics. Spike's ability to read Buffy so well is one of the things i love most about Spuffy.

Also, i loved the Faith/Angel interactions.

Redreh_Esila crept into Spike's mind; condensed Spike's s5-7 journey into a short but incredibly intense scene; and managed to rationalize Spike's "no you don't" using the actual lines from the show. Reading this story reminds again how much the beauty of season 7 Spuffy owes to the season 6 set-up.

And I wanted to take a moment to talk about the fact that I'm nearly squirming in anticipation for the newest chapter of Dust. Ugh. This is why I usually wait until fics are completed to read them!

More Season 9 fic! This one is so sweet and I think the characterization is right on. Even if Season 9 turns out to be a dud (highly doubt it from all the teasers they're giving us though!), the fic is awesome!
