As for me, it's not my favorite, but I find this quote to be rather interesting:

"What I want is the Spike that's dangerous. The Spike that tried to kill me when we first met."

Hm. She "wants" "dangerous" Spike? For battle? Hmm. Does she miss dangerous Spike? Or is this the whole "you always want what you can't have" thing?

I dunno, but it's certainly controversial.. 😀

Like I posted in the "harsh quotes" thread, I always hated that line. It was cruel of her to tell him she wanted the old him back, when he fought so hard not to be that man.

I always liked Marster's delivery on this line: "Well, that's bloody funny coming from you! No more games? That's all you've ever done is play me! You keep playing with rules you make up as you like. You know what I am. You've always known. You come to me all the same."

just a thought but along with the 'wanting what you can't have' could it be the whole desire for a 'bad boy' that you women always seem to want? lol and yes im generalizing here just posing a theory.

Eh, bad boys totally hold appeal, but in this instance, I think Buffy mostly wanted Spike the fighter back. She needed him to win her war, and I think part of her also missed him. She knew him well before and he was different in a lot of ways after the soul, so it's possible some part of her missed the old Spike.

She can't have a guy around her who saps away her energy by brooding in a corner; been there, done that, and (at least I assume so) she remembers how much strength it cost her to keep nurturing Angel's neediness, strength she will direly need in this fight. She needs a man with get-up and go to fight at her side and be her rock in stormy sea.

It kinda reminds me of the New Man movement of some years back. Neither the hateful macho/rapist nor the castrated softie works as a fitting partner for an empowered, strong woman; it has to be a New Man who is equally lover and fighter, who's in touch with the inner strength of his own wild side without either allowing himself to be conquered by it, nor killing it off within himself entirely.

Sadly, one look into Old Broody's eyes seems to be able to make her forget all that. (Anyone thinking of a certain ABBA song right now? "Look into his Angeleyes / one look and you're hypnotized / until one day you see he wears a disguise / don't look to deep into those Angeleyes, oh no no no no!" 😀)

I tried to agree but I've agreed with you too much and it won't let me. So, I agree. Angel kiss aside, she did send him packing in the end. Maybe she just snapped back to her senses.

People talk about season 7 and say it is just the Buffy and Spike show. With scenes like the one Joan just mentioned i for one was happy that the two characters spent so much time with each other. It allowed the relationship to build and change for the better over a short space of time. We saw this new love grow and it was great to watch.

I really loved that speech by Buffy in NLM. She has a certain way of trying to build confidence in others sometimes. It reminded me of the speech she gave Angel in Amends. In both she started out by showing her irritation with their "woe is me" defeatist stance and the notion that she could never understand what they've suffered because she is not a recovering killer and then she switches to listing the reasons why they should fight to become better people and that she will be there to help them. She shows that she is not just a lovesick girl-woman that wants them in her life. She makes it clear that she understands fully well what they are and what they've done and that there is a long hard road ahead of them.

I loved that Spike got to return the favor in Touched with a speech designed to emotionally strengthen her and make her believe in herself again.

OK, this is neither a Spike nor Buffy quote, but I'm watching season 7 and had never before realized that Cassie told Spike in Help: "Someday she'll tell you" which of course totally prophecizes Chosen. And the look on his face...haunting.

Loved how they chose to word it. Not "Someday she'll say it." or "Eventually you'll know."

Completely dispels the whole didn't love him/loved him as a friend debate. Why foreshadow them being best friends when everyone knew it by the twelfth episode?

I love in As You Were when Buffy calls Spike "William." She's finally started to see him as a man and that's why she can't continue to use him.

The look on Spike's face is heartbreaking.

Not really controversial once you recall that she was, at that moment, in her "General Buffy" persona. She was, quite literally, though at that moment it hadn't actually gone that far, the person who has to send troops out to die, because, as Wes said once on "Angel," If I try to save this few, I'll wind up getting them all killed." General Buffy needed the strongest, most dangerous fighter she had ever faced, and he was standing right there in her living room. She couldn't afford to be Spike's protector, friend, or lover. She had to be his commanding officer, and she was telling him exactly what she would have told Angel under the same circumstances: "We've got an enemy to fight and an apocalypse to put down. Now get off of your brooding ass and get back in the fight. We need you."

I do wish in a way that there had been some private moment afterward when she had told him that, but then again, it speaks volumes for just how deep and understanding their relationship was by then that she never actually had to say it. Spike knew exactly what she meant when she said it, and WHY she had said it. No explanations were necessary between them.

As for my favorite Spuffy quote, from "Tabula Rasa," "A vampire with a soul? How lame is that?"

I know Buffy was under a spell in "Something Blue" when she said it, but it still always stands out for me. When Spike gets upset that Buffy mentions Angel, Buffy says, "Hey, you don't think I live with the shadow of Drusilla over my head?" When you think about it, Spike always thought his love for Dru was eternal (as he says in "Lovers' Walk"), and Bangel is always associated as this "forever" love. So, I just always find the quote interesting in that it shows both Buffy and Spike came from prior relationships where they thought it would have lasted forever.
