Spuffy The Replacement For Bangel?

Ok, I don't want this to turn into an argument over who Buffy belongs with. The goal of this topic is not to find out who she belongs with. Its just to discuss the possibility that Spuffy is just the replacement for Bangle.

The first three seasons of Buffy were heavily focused on her and Angel's relationship. Some may say Bangle is what Buffy is all about. People watched as their relationships made many twists and turns.

But after three years Angel moved to his own show. This would make it hard to keep up a relationship between Buffy and Angel but Joss and co. did try for two years untill Buffy left the WB for UPN. This made the chances of continuing the storyline near impossible.

So Joss threw Buffy a new love interest straight after Angel in the form of Riley. This relationship didn't work at all due to the fact that Riley was hated by millions of Buffy fans. So Riley left in season 5.

Now this left Joss with a problem. In his eyes Buffy needed a love interest. They had tried giving Buffy a new type of relationship by giving her a guy who was human and had no hidden past but it had failed. There was no way of bringing back Angel so what do they do? They try and emulate the Bangle ship but instead of using Angel they use Spike.

Spike is very similar to Angel. All black, leather coats, shady past and when Spike was around Buffy he even started acting like Angel!

Spuffy in season 6 was basicly sex and it went no deeper untill the last few seconds of the season where we find out Spike has gained a soul.

Roll on season 7 when Spuffy really starts becoming Bangle. Compare Spuffy season 7 to Bangle season 3 and its basicly the same thing!

In my eyes Spuffy was just made to try and copy the sucess of Bangle (which it has done). Your views on the subject?

I think with the success of Buffy and Angel's relationship and then the disaster of Buffy and Riley's relationship, that Joss was trying to recapture his first success.

I don't think Riley would have sucked so much if they hadn't brought him in as Buffy's love interst in season 4. If they had given Buffy a season of being single and had given the Bangel fans time to get over Angel leaving, they wouldn't have needed to introduce the Buffy/Spike relationship (sorry Spuffy fans).

I just noticed that. I knew that Spike and Angel were similar, but yeah Spike seems like a good replacement for Angel.

I wouldn't say S3 Bangel is like S7 Spuffy.

Bangel S3- Starts off Buffy mourning about Angel, then he comes back and they try to stay apart and then they ended up together and then broke up again.

Spuffy S7- Buffy helped Spike with his new soul, then they stayed apart for a long time. Spike loved Buffy but Buffy didn't show much intrest until towards the end. Then they hugged at best really.

I think that Riley and Buffy was the real replacement relationship, but obviously that didn't work out. To some extent you can say that Spuffy was a type of replacement, but there would have been a bigger problem if Spike and Buffy never hooked up. Spike probably would have ended up being killed or leaving the show(not getting his own like Angel), which would have been a huge dissapointment to many buffy fans. The character probably would have gotten boring unless they brought like Dru or someone back, and many people would have been waiting for the spuffy relationship to happen. I do think Joss was trying to get that relationship that the fans just fell in love with like bangel, but the relationships are so different that you really can't say that one was a replacement for the other. There was really no guarentee that Spuffy would have been as popular as bangel. Spuffy was all about love making, pain, and some hatred. Bangel was a very sweet relationship, which many true romantics liked more. The s3 and s7 relationships are somewhat similiar, but the spuffy s7 was all about regaining trust, where bangel s3 was also a little about that, but Buffy knew that he had been Angelus in s2, so it was very different. I'm just kinda rambling on here, but overall the relationships were so different that you can't say that spuffy was a replacement for bangel.

I'm not talking about what actually happened in the relationship in those seasons. What I'm trying to say is that Spuffy season 7 is just like Bangle. The only reason I used season 3 as an example is because it was the last time we saw Bangle as a couple.

I totally agree, in my eyes Season7 Spuffy is a replacement for Bangle. Spuffy in season7 was all mushy basically like Bangel in Season3 and Spikes little quote about hes lived yadda yadda yadda and your the only person i've ever loved speach was very Bangel.

Definitely in Season 7. That whole scene in Touched was a Bangel moment, not to mention the knockedoff quote from Angel.

Season 5 - 6, it wasn't really. But Season 7... vampire with a soul, in love with the Slayer, fighting evil, the first tormenting Spike JUST LIKE Angel in Amends, etc... Haven't we been here before?

Edited to add: Behold the knockoff-ness
Original - Angel: And there's no comparison... in 243 years I've loved exactly one person.
Cheesy knockoff - Spike: A 100+ years, and there's only one thing I've ever been sure of: you.

Don't mean to make anyone upset, but Spike saying that made me upset beyond ALL belief.

I know when Spike said that I started going "Hmm havent I heard that somewhere before?" and then I almost started yelling at the screen, but in Angel Season4 during Angels dream with Cordy they used some of the same quotes as well like the whole part of them almost being killed and yadda yadda yadda.

Yea, I noticed. I think the writers recycle alot of quotes/scenes. I'd have no problem with Spuffy (well, I'd hate Spuffy anyways) coming to its own in Season 7, making it different from Bangel. But, I don't like when they have to change the characters just to make them shippy, like they did with Cordy/Angel. Or when they copy off of another ship *cough*B/A*cough*
Both B/S (Season 7) and C/A had alot similar quotes/scenes to B/A, and that I don't like. At least B/R was different.

I'm totally with you.

Spuffy was a copy of bangel,...a bad copy imo
the writers tried to do the same, but they coudln't,..it wasn't teh same,it could never be the same...bangel is bangel and spuffy is spuffy...the ships were very similar, but bangel is the original one.

I don't really see Spuffy as a new Bangel. Bangel, to me, was more of an actual relationship while Spuffy seems to be more about the growth of the two characters individually (not that I don't adore Spuffy!). If you know what I mean. Which, you probably don't! But anyways! Also, Buffy was still a teenager during Bangel while she was much more mature in Spuffy. So I can't really see too much of a parallel between them....

I always find myself comparing Spuffy season 7 to Bangel season three. Both couples were trying not to get too passionate and keep their hands off each other.

in s3 buffy couldn't keep her hands off angel cuz she loved him too much,...that's the bloody difference between bangel and spuffy...buffy never really loved spike!

Season 1 was sorta teeny...Season 2 Bangel more mature... but Season 3 Bangel was VERY mature. I think thats why its compared to Season 7 Spuffy.

Okay i'm not just saying this because im very obsessed with angel, but spuffy could never replace bangel...There isnt a replacment...

When angel comes to sunnydale in S7 and spike sees them together, he acts like he would rather have caleb chop buffys face off then thoes two see eachother again...Why do you think this is???Because he knows he could never replace buffy and angel...

But this isnt about what spike thinks of bangel...(as you noticed im really NOT a spuffy fan)

What i think is that spuffy is just a bangel wanna-be in the making..i mean sure they say the same stuff (which i agree is very dumb) and they have the same things goin on with the playin hard to get and the lovey dovey-ness, but bangel will always be first!I think Joss knew that...But he wanted to capture the magic, even if inside he knew it was impossible...(sorry spuffy fans!)

i think that true about riley...If they wouldnt have rushed buffy into another relationship, riley would be just fine...But it would have been smart to give us bangel freaks some time to get used to the loss of bangel!(which, btw, should have never happened!)

My point is that spuffy could never be bangel! No matter how lovey dovey and how "gurr" it all gets, its just not happening!(especially now that buffy is over)

Angel-Babez01:so true!!!...bangel is real,spuffy is a bad copy...buffy didn't even love spike!!!...how could spike replace her love's life,angel?!

I do believe that Spike was written in as a luv interest for our Buffy AFTER RILEY. First there was Angel, then Riley and now Spike. Buffy cannot be without a luv interest. What fun would the show of been if she didn't ever have anybody for herself. AND what fun would of it of been if they wrote in another relationship exactly like Bangle or Briley? That is why Spuffy is so spicy! I understand that many do not like things as spicy, more have a taste for something a little sweeter, hence our Bangles! I just happen to have a tongue with a passion for a wide variety of flavors, hence my fence sitting! 🙂

I do agree that it was a replacement relationship, but a replacement from all of her past relationships! I don't think that Spuffy is any less than Bangle or Briley. It is different and it is just.

Go Chas! I agree with Chasity and This Years Girl. Spuffy was originally brought in as a way to show us what Buffy was going through. Where she was emotinaly and mentaly at the time. It was NOT a replacment to Bangle. I think that they kept Spike there because so many fans loved him. His character was so well developed. Buffy made him better and the character had to evolve. So they went through everything they did and I don't feel they were anything alike.
And No Angel, there is no way you are going to have a discussion on how Spuffy is a rip off on Bangel and NOT get involved in a war between who Buffy should be with.

Well I am not saying that Spuffy in Season6 was a rip off of Bangel but Spuffy in Season7 to me is very much a big rip off of the couple, I also found Spuffy to be more sappy then Bangel ever was.
