Weird title i know but i cant think of anything else to explain it as..i was just re watching Touched and realised during spikes speech he goes to touch her face, before i thought it wasnt such a big thing but you see him close his hand and look disappointed she moved away. Why do you think that was put in? Her not wanting him to touch her face..is it to show her asking him to hold her was such a big thing, he letting him hold her again after what happened?

Just curious as to others opinions 🙂
 
You're right, when I saw the title I thought it was weird, and couldn't figure out what this thread is about.

As for the question,
I think Buffy was scared. Scared to get hurt. Scared to love and be loved. He was saying things that were both true and frightening. Just like he said afterwards that when he held her that night he was terrified. So I think she was too. I have no actual explanation for that, but I'm sure others do and I would love to hear that, because this is such a strong statement, that back pulling.

I think i never noticed before as I watched Buffy..never really read between the lines..since i started doing media i look into everything now and especially when it comes to Joss and BTVS writers, directors and the amazing acting of James and Sarah, they had a reason for everything..so it got me thinking. Plus i dont think it can be a coincidence that when Buffy touches Spikes face in the basement it is so...*insert word for big emotional over the top, in a subtle way, full of love gesture* 🙂
 
I thought it was one of two things...
One, it was her subconscious way of telling him that she didn't trust him anymore after the AR, soul or not. She was telling him she didn't feel the same way he did.

Two, she didn't like people touching her face. I'm funny about people touching me. I find people touching my hands or face an incredibly intimate thing. Most people that know me won't touch my hands. And no one but my person touches my face without permission or I feel violated. I can't help it. I don't mind people hugging me, or anything like that, but my hands and face people don't need to be touching.
 
you see that would make total sense if he hadn't stayed. to me it seemed to be the part of 'your a hell of a women..your the one buffy' then joking about being good looking and athletic.. easing the situation slightly, bringing the intensity back down, that made her want him to hold her..where he was touching her face and stroking her hair and *slightly melts* 🙂 it just seemed to me that the mirror of her doing it 2 episodes later showed how they had got so much closer just after 1 day
 
I think that if Buffy had let Spike touch her at that moment, she would have fallen totally to pieces, and never have been able to return to the fight. She was totally exhausted, sore, heartbroken, probably at the very end of whatever reserves of energy and determination had kept her literally fighting a war all season. She had nothing left to give. It says a tremendous amount about that scene that, at the beginning, Buffy couldn't abide even the most casual human contact, but only a few moments later she wants Spike to hold her while she sleeps.

This scene is quite similar to the scene in Season 3 whae Buffy lets, or makes, Angel feed in her, thereby regaining the strength needed to continue the fight. This time, it's Buffy who draws strength from Spike.
 
She misinterpreted his intentions, thinking he was going to kiss her. It's in the script.
 
I think the original shooting script says she misreads Spike by his gesture. Not much detail, I know, lol!

First, consider what Spike told Buffy beforehand. "100 plus years. And there's only one thing I've ever been sure of. You." This statement really seemed to have an impact on Buffy. She looks at Spike, even kind of turns her gaze for a second, which seems to me like she's nervous and doesn't know what to say in response. I think to calm and and comfort her, Spike reaches out to touch Buffy's cheek. Yet, because she's still nervous and doesn't really know what Spike wants (or even what she wants at this point), she turns her head. But Spike doesn't want her to get the wrong idea (especially after everything they've gone through). So, he tells her to look at him and he explains he's not asking her for anything (not even for her love). And then, he goes into his amazing speech. 🙂

Honestly, I'm kind of glad Buffy turned her head when Spike tried to touch her face. It made the moment when Buffy told Spike to sit next to her and hold her that much more meaningful. It was kind of like saying Spike shouldn't be afraid to reach out to her or hold her. It also made the moment when they slid next to each other and cuddled much more powerful IMO. 🙂

aaaaahhhhh yes that all makes more sense now..its not obvious without knowing what was in the script though i feel. they were too far away for me to think she misinterpreted his actions..but it makes sense why he says what he does after 🙂 didnt think about that significance 🙂
