Not as gutted. I'll be disappointed if they eventually say Buffy and Spike weren't meant to be, but I've never taken the Season 8 comics all that seriously. I don't like comics, for one, and from what I read, the plotlines are kind of silly and not very Buffy-the-show like.

Hey, at least we're not the only ones feeling the pain! With the huge spoilers that's just come out, we're not the only ship that's having trouble with the comics.

I got the first few comics but can't get into them. The show is the end for me.
Or... maybe it's just one big conspiracy? Maybe he said that just to throw us off. After all, there are rumors that Spike's going to show up in Comic #33

Spike will show up in the last arc written by Joss (I think) 36-40
I don't think that Buffy has any idea whatsoever that Spike is alive, and I believe that she has been kept ignorant of the fact by the direct orders and actions of the man who was once the closest thing to a father to her. Andrew obviously reported directly to Giles as soon as he returned with Dana, and I believe that Giles ordered him to keep Buffy and her friends ignorant of the fact that Spike had returned. I believe that Andrew was still working for Giles when Angel and Spike came to Rome, which is the main reason that he allowed them to believe that the girl there was actually Buffy. Granted, that is entirely theory on my part, and as such has nothing whatsoever to do with any spoilers or discussion pertaining to the conclusion of Season 8, but I believe that it is a theory that will eventually prove to be true.

I don't get caught up in the Giles-Andrew Conspiracy theories but I don't think that Buffy knows that Spike is alive (although I have changed my mind on this so many times that I should say, Today - I don't think that Buffy knows that Spike is Alive 🙂) My reasoning is that Spike asked Andrew not to tell Buffy and I think that Andrew kept his word. Just as I believe that Andrew kept his word to Buffy about the decoy Slayer as seen in The Girl in Question.

The fact that SMG and Michelle T. were not available to film episodes of Angel in season five handed Joss and Co a story-telling peice of gold in the whole does she, doesn't she know Spike's alive debate. Like others have said, I find it impossible to believe that Joss would allow such a monumental peice of the story to be handled off page. I think this is why they've saved Spike's reveal for last. Because it is so huge and because it's traditional to save the best for last 🙂

Scott Allie has said some questionable things about Spike in the past, he's had some huge dust-ups with spike fans (over at cough***********cough) but ultimately, it's not his story. He doesn't plan it, he doesn't write it - he just edits the thing. Joss has said we will see Spike and that he 'has plans for him' so I'm not worried at all. In fact, I'm brimming with hope. Scott Allie's job is to subdue speculation - because when people speculate they invariably guess what is going on, post about it online and then the stories hold no surprises. I suspect that Mr. Allie is sitting on a big Spike-shaped surprise and is just trying to dull down speculation.

I don't necessarily expect a shippy/romantic reunion. Just for Spike and Buffy to show that they still have that same innate connection they had in season seven. And I want a Jo Chen Cover!!!

I used to have this theory that Buffy did know that Spike was alive and that Spike knew that the slayer in Rome was a decoy...goes to find it....

What if"¦. just what if, Spike already knew that the Buffy they were chasing in Rome was not the really real Buffy? Knowing the history of Spike and Buffy I just can't fathom that he wouldn't have called her after becoming corporeal again and having the sham of his supposed "˜destiny' exposed. I get the fear, I get the uncertainty and I get the reluctance. I can sympathise with his desire to have Buffy remember him fondly and love him for his sacrifice. But I don't buy the idea that this would ultimately stop him from contacting her. I just don't. He said to Andrew in Damage that he would "˜take care' of telling Buffy about his being alive. We know enough about Spike to be sure that he would do exactly what he says he will do and if he called her then the truth of everything including her body doubles would have naturally been revealed; that is just Spike and Buffy. Or Andrew would have told Buffy about seeing him in LA and she would have contacted him. By the end of season seven Spike and Buffy shared an innate trust that would preclude lies and deception. Therefore, in my theory, Spike would have actually known that the "˜Buffy" they were chasing throughout The Girl in Question was not the genuine article.

My theory is not without substance. There are a few things that happen in The Girl in Question that give it weight. First is Spike's complete indifference to the prospect of going to Italy. Andrew told Spike that Buffy was living in Rome, Angel then offers Spike the opportunity to go to Italy on assignment; one might expect a reaction to the fact that he would be in Buffy's vicinity, or that there is an opportunity to see her again - excitement, restrained enthusiasm or conversely, perhaps reluctance or dread, either way "“ some kind of reaction. But we get none. All we see is total lack of interest in the assignment. Could this lack of interest derive from knowing that there is nothing and nobody in Italy that he's remotely interested in seeing?

Spike only becomes interested in going to Rome when Angel says he is going. This is obviously because Buffy is now involved. Neither wants the other getting the jump on them where she is concerned. But what if Spike's motives are not so much to see "˜Buffy' but to stop Angel seeing her? In my theory Spike knows that the Buffy in Rome is a fake and suddenly Angel says he's going to Rome because Buffy is in danger. Angel doesn't know about the decoys "“ the slayer contingent doesn't trust him because they don't trust Wolfram and Hart. Yet if he goes charging off to Rome to "˜save' Buffy then the decoy's cover will be blown putting the real Buffy in increased danger. So knowing that he'd never be able to stop Angel going to Rome Spike accompanies him to intervene in any possible meetings; which we see him do. Spike is the one who charges onto the dance floor ready to confront "˜Buffy' about her fling with The Immortal. What if this was not so much about warning Buffy as it was about warning a Buffy decoy? All this secret-keeping is very much in character too. Spike is very good at keeping his mouth shut. He withstood both Xander and Angel's jibes about his relationship with Buffy without saying much in his own defence. Also, the soul, the removal of the chip, and even his return from the dead have all been kept to himself even when he could have used these things to further his own cause.

At no point does Spike ever comment on the prospect of seeing Buffy again. There's no nerves, no anticipation, no awkwardness, no competitiveness"¦ In fact, it's the reverse. What we do see is a self-depreciating Spike who on more than one occasion plays down his own chances with Buffy. "Not that I thought I had a chance"¦" and "look, I know I don't have a shot with her" he says in very uncharacteristic fashion. This is very unlike Spike who usually gets particularly ballsy when faced with insurmountable odds or particularly when it looks like Angel is going to get the better of him. To me, this smacks of the younger vampire playing good, subservient William, desperately trying not to push the old sire's buttons and keep him sweet and unaware of the real situation. In this episode Spike is often the voice of reason. He tries valiantly to keep them on task with the demon head and on a number of occasions suggests its time to go home rather than continue the pursuit of Buffy. Well that's it, that's the theory. In my opinion (and that all this is"¦) it wouldn't be at all surprising to find that this episode that has been subject to so many contextual alterations had undergone one more"¦..or maybe not. We'll just have to wait and see.

CHECKPOINT | Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel Exegesis

But like I said, I'm not sure I believe this anymore.

This is fresh from ********* Q&A #31 with Scott Allie:

Can you give your thought on Joss's comments about Spike's appearance since he will be showing up and was there any truth in the letter column today in your answer in relation to this?

Scott Allie:
I was surprised Joss admitted that Spike was coming. In the lettercol, which was written wellll before the spoilers happened, I was still trying to be vague and vamping about anything like this. But the truth is, we simply haven't addressed the question of Spike yet in the comics. What Buffy knows or doesn't know about him, or any of what happened in the final season of Angel is a bit of a question mark right now. Soon to be answered, as you now know ... But in terms of my response in the lettercol, I was trying to be pretty vague and speculative. And any appearance that might hypothetically be definitely coming with Spike, that script is not yet written.

Probably, Twilight will tell Buffy at the most inconvenient moment about Spike being alive.

Personally, I think that the best possible way to introduce Spike into Season 8 would be to closely duplicate the "Hello, Cutie," scene from "Becoming, Part 2," possibly as the last panel of the last page of the issue, then let everybody stew over it for a month, speculating on whether Buffy will:

A) Throw herself into his arms with cries of undying passion and love,

B) Not say anything, just drag Spike off into the nearest dark corner, leaving a trail of discarded clothing in their path,

C) Punch him in the nose,

D) Say something along the lines of, "Well, IT'S ABOUT TIME YOU SHOWED UP! (Then revert to Option B)

E) Send him back to LA to organize a Second Front.

F) (Add your own favorite scene here)

At least that's what I would do.

I'm not surprised someone asked about this. Glad to know I'm not the only one who noticed Scott's comment. What, now he's taking back what he said? We shouldn't assume Buff knows Spike is alive? WTF? I am so sick of all of this.

Sounds to me like Scott is trying to "cover his tracks" and save his ass. He made a "vauge" comment without much thought, and everyone freaked out. Sounds like this "plan" Joss has for Spike must not be very big or developed, considering his editor doesn't even know about it. Of course Scott was "surprised." JOSS HASN'T EVEN BROUGHT UP THE ISSUE WITH SPIKE WITH HIM, has he? It appears not.

I'm not trying to rant here, but come on! What am I supposed to believe? I am so sick of this he said she said I'm surprised he said that, CRAP. Scott and Joss obviously want to keep the fans happy, and clearly they'll say anything to keep them that way.

I agree about Twilight being the one to tell Buffy about Spike being alive. That could get very interesting. I only hope the news doesn't surprise her so much it takes her off guard, giving Twilight an in to hurt her.

This post totally cheered me up, by the way.

I like option B. But, it that doesn't happen, I'd like to be them have a little heart-to-heart. Something like:

Buffy: "Spike."
She smiles.
Spike: "Yeah...it's me. In the glorious flesh. Did you miss me?"
Buffy looks confused.
Buffy: "How...what...when?"
Spike: "Nevermind that. I'll tell you the whole story later. Involved me being a ghost. And a weird box. And hell, even the Reaper showed up. The PTB. An amulet...like I said, long story."
Buffy frowns.
Buffy: "Huh?"
Spike shakes his head.
Spike: "Nevermind, pet. All in due time. Now, let's kill that sonofabit*h Angel, rip off and burn his poofy mask, and if we're still standing when the carnage is over, I'll let you see my new crypt."
Buffy: "We have work to do."
Buffy takes Spike's hand, smiles shyly, and they walk into the Fray together.

I love these characters and this universe so much, that I tend to get a bit emotional over it. Sorry for my rant, guys. 🙁

I just don't know what to make of anything anymore. Whose comments are to be taken seriously?

I read it differently to you - Joss has made it clear that the broad outline of the story has been in place from the beginning, even though he gave each writer freedom within their arc, he was also very direct with them about where they had to take the characters to keep them on track with the overall story. Scott wrote the letter col in the most recent issue of Buffy before the twilight-gate saga errupted and so was being very secrative/non-commital about Spike's return because he wanted to keep the surprise up DH's sleeve. In the S.A. Q&A he was expressing his surprise that Joss had confirmed that Spike was going to make an appearance, not that he didn't know what was going on or that it was the first he'd heard of Spike making a return. Scott would know exactly what is going to happen with Spike - and sure, they probably haven't started actually writing the issues yet, but his comments on this were probably just another way of hosing down speculation.

I'm taking all this as really good news for us Spike fans 🙂

Scott Allie got 'jossed':lmao: I agree with Tranquillity, he wrote that letter before the Twilightgate and, as usual, he was trying not to spoil anything, he just didn't realize the impact to fans. If somebody would look back through his older Q&A's probably intentionally misleads were to be found.

What I found interesting for Spike referenced to Season 8 is that Joss went from:

I won't be using the ancillary characters from "Angel" unless I absolutely think that nobody else can fit this bill. Spike and Angel I will definitely use, but sparingly. But I would do that anyway. You don't want to use it up by having Spike standing around in the background of every frame. He means so much to Buffy, so did Angel, that you want to save them for the big hits. -- Joss Whedon (GeekMonthly)

to

You know, like Angel, he's somebody we wanted to keep our mitts off of for a while. And, like Angel, he's incredibly important to Buffy. So do I have plans for Spike? I don't think anybody's going to gasp in horror when I say, "Yes." What are they? I don't think anybody's going to gasp in horror when I say "I'm not going to tell you!" [Laughs]

But again, it's a question of leaving everything that IDW is doing "“ and I'm not aware of everything they're doing, and I haven't read a lot of the stuff "“ and giving just enough [on our end] so it'll jibe with whatever they're doing. It's not like Spike's going to turn up and now he's a werewolf. He'll still be Spike, and we won't constrict them from doing whatever stories they want.--Joss Whedon CBR News

So, one is Twilight, can't wait to see what he planned for the other (the more evolved one) :wink0:
Joan the Vampire Slayer agrees: Aren't you already a S/B shipper?
Not a "pure" shipper: I love Spike and Spike loves Buffy, that's why I'm interested in spuffy. Sometimes I kinda dislike Buffy (between 'tell me you love me' and 'it was love for you'). And just to feel better, after Smashed I look at dailies instead of actual episodes.

I just hope Spike shows up soon and him and Buffy have a conversation. Honestly, that's all I want. For them to re-connect to each other in some way...

"He MEANS so much to Buffy, so DID Angel..." The old English major in me might see that as meaning that Buffy's feelings for Spike are current, while her feelings for Angel are in the past. But then, I guess that's just wishful thinking.

Seriously, though, I really will be surprised if Season 8 doesn't ent with Buffy, Angel, and Spike completely intact and the Bangel/Spuffy question left completely unresolved. As I've said before, if Joss didn't purposely create the controversy about which vampire Buffy truly and forever loves, he has most certainly used it to his advantage. This single issue is arguably one of, if not THE thing that has kept many fans interested in the show and its characters. I know that, as much as I have enjoyed Buffy in all of its forms, debating the merits of Spuffy over Bangel has most certainly been the frostion on the cake, and, if the question were to be answered, definitely, once and for all, a little bit of the fun would be gone. I can live with Bangel if I have to, but I would most certainly miss the Bangel/Spuffy debate.

I do have a Plan B in place, though, and I hereby invite all of my fellow Spuffies to join me, if our great ship does sink, in rooting for Spaith.

Agreed. I could respect Joss' decison with if that's how it ended, but let's not forget: all true heroes always end up alone. Joss knows the power the Spuffy/Bangel debate has on his fandom; 'ships hold the glue together, our belief in them bonds us and keeps us guessing and arguing. Most of all, our 'ships keep us alive, and by extension, this world Joss has created that we all love so much.

Yet, even if the Bangel/Spuffy question is fully put to rest in canon, I will always 'ship Spuffy. I'll always believe that Spike and Buffy were better for each other, and simply more interesting as a couple.

They will always and forever be my favorite TV couple, no matter who ends up together in the end.

I do have a Plan B in place, though, and I hereby invite all of my fellow Spuffies to join me, if our great ship does sink, in rooting for Spaith.

Well, if Bangel gets together, then I guess Spangel is out of the question...so yes, I'll jump on the Spiath wagon. 🙂 I always thought the two would be hot together. That scene in 'Dirty Girls' comes to mind (in the basement...Buffy gets jealous!) In fact, I can't imagine anyone other then Angel and Buffy I'd like to see Spike with.

My favorite fantasy about a Spike/Faith relationship is that, where Sopikr awakened sheer animal passion in Buffy, he would go exactly the oposite way with Faith, introducing her to the joys ao a truly romantic relationship, complete with holding hands when they walk together, a single red rose left on the pillow the morning after making love, two straws in one milkshake, the works. Sloppy, sentimental, and sweet. Something that I doubt that Faith has ever had before.

And it would no doubt drive Buffy stark staring mad with jealousy. Faith gets all the romance and all of the toe curling sex, while Buffy gets ti sit around watching Angel brood. Justice is sweet.

Today, I was listening to some music and was thinking about making a Spuffy fan mix.

Do any of you have songs that remind you of Spuffy? What are they?

The Boy Who Blocked His Own Shot - Brand New

If it makes you less sad
I will die by your hand
I hope you find out what you want
I already know what I am
And if it makes you less sad
We'll start talking again
And you can tell me how vile
I already know that I am

I'll grow old
And start acting my age
I'll be a brand new day
In a life that you hate
A crown of gold
A heart that's harder than stone
And it hurts a whole lot
But it's missed when it's gone

Call me a safe bet
I'm betting I'm not
I'm glad you that can forgive
Only hoping as time goes
You can forget

If it makes you less sad
I'll move out of the state
You can keep to yourself
I'll keep out of your way
And if it makes you less sad
I'll take your pictures all down
Every picture you paint
I will paint myself out
It's as cold as a tomb
And it's dark in your room
When I sneak to your bed
To pour salt in your wounds
So call it quits
Or get a grip
Say you wanted a solution
You just wanted to be missed

Call me a safe bet
I'm betting I'm not
I'm glad that you can forgive
I'm only hoping as time goes
You can forget
So you can forget
You can forget

You are calm and reposed
Let your beauty unfold
Pale white like the skin
Stretched over your bones
Spring keeps you ever close
You are second hand smoke
You are so fragile and thin
Standing trial for your sins
Holding onto yourself the best you can
You are the smell before the rain
You are the blood in my veins

Call me a safe bet
I'm betting I'm not
I'm glad that you can forgive
I'm only hoping as time goes
You can forget
