WIP, late season 5, PG-13, post-Intervention. 6 chapters so far. Buffy and Spike travel back in time to 70-es to retrieve an artefact that can help them in their fight against Glory. There, they meet younger version of Giles and his buddy Ethan Rayne... Tight, clever plotting and great character voices.

You're welcome, darling. This is what I'm here for! To spread the Spuffy love! lol
If you're looking for a long, great Spuffy story, check out Thought You Should Know by Emmie G at fanfiction.net. It's a fantastic Post-BtS/AtS reunion story. There's angst but it doesn't take over, and the way she writes Couple!Spuffy is how I've always imagined them.

If you need more persuasion, here's an excerpt of the letter Spike writes to Buffy:

Buffy,

I've tried so many times to think of the perfect words to say to you. To let you know I was back from the great beyond. To tell you how I felt. I can't find them. I've racked my brain till I was ready to strangle something but they're never right. There are no words to fully explain what you mean to me. Every word isn't enough. Not strong enough or powerful enough or beautiful enough. It's a new torture all its own, to be filled to the brim with so much feeling and unable to express it. So I found myself swallowing these inadequate noises. They were unworthy of you. You deserve better. Always have.

So why am I bothering you now? Way I figure it, this might be my last chance. I know you've moved on. I suppose Andrew told you about my visit to Rome. Pathetic, right? I only caught a glimpse of you, a shimmer of gold, but I could tell you were happy. Finally happy. You looked free the way you were dancing. I've always loved to watch you dance. You were never more alive than when you were dancing. I never felt more alive than when we were dancing together. Beauty in motion.

She walks in beauty, like the night
Of cloudless climes and starry skies;
And all that's best of dark and bright
Meet in her aspect and her eyes

Byron truly was a poncey bastard, but he had a way with words. Better poet than I could ever hope to be. That's how I see you. A creature of darkness born of fire and sunlight. Dangerous and powerful. Yet the darkness never consumes you. You rule the night. Your inner light banishes the shadows. You conquer and enslave. Makes you warm inside to be near it. And beneath that strength lies your heart. I've spent so much time trying to find myself there. Within the warmth of your heart. I think I always knew that's where I'd find home again.

Love, don't mind me. I told you once it didn't matter how I felt, that I didn't want anything from you. That's not exactly true. Hell, it's complete bollocks. I want. I want so many things from you. But I know I'll never get them. And you shouldn't give them to me. But I'd be a fool not to see you for what you are and be staggered by your light. The Slayer. Buffy. All that's best of dark and bright.

I wanted you to know how I felt. How I feel. It's a part of me, the best part. Sometimes I think it's the only good inside me "“ the part capable of loving you. It means I'm more than a monster. That maybe someday I'll finally be...

Bad things are coming, love. And I find myself taking a side I never thought I'd choose. But he who shall not be named needs my help. It's the right thing to do. And I think you'd be proud. So I'm going to save the world one last time.

Just thought you should know.

- Spike

I wasn't really sure which thread to put this in, as it's not entirely about Spuffy - more about the way we view ships in general. So if you think this fits in better with one of the other threads, re-post it there.

Anyway, it's a meta rec by gabrielleabelle, who writes about Fandom Eyewear - how shippers all have different 'lenses' through which we view the show/read and write fic. It's interesting, and gives a good reason for why the Spuffy vs. Bangel (or Spander vs. Spangel etc. etc....) will never be resolved.

thanks! your contributions have been great in this thread.
OK guys, don't laugh, but I'm starting to think that Buffy first fell in love with Spike in S5, right after Intervention. :/

Spike was the guy who'd always just been there. She hadn't ever really wanted him there, but he never actually left like most people she knew.

Unlike many, he accepted her as she was. He never tried to change her or force her to do something against her will (I'm skipping over SR, that's a WHOLE different topic) for her "own good". He respected her and told her everything just like it was without any of the lies or manipulation that were present in other relationships she'd had. He had willingly laid down his life for her without any selfish motive and had tried everything just to make her happy without receiving anything but coldness in return. He was her equal, and would listen to her without judging her.

I don't think she actually FELL in love with him, but she loved him as a friend at the end of S5. He'd done so much for her, helped her and listened to her, protected her family without reward, was (usually) sweet and encouraging to her, understood her. When she kissed him and hung out with him in his crypt it seemed like she really did feel a kind of loving protectiveness for him, if nothing else. 🙂 That, "I won't forget it." But she wasn't really physically attracted to him yet.

Then, in S6, it goes deeper. They share a special bond that she never really had with anyone else. That "you always hurt the one you love" thing. She felt comfortable being herself with him alone. She didn't have to put up a false facade, pretend to be happy, or pretend to be ANYTHING. She just had to be Buffy, because she knew that throughout everything he'd always love her. She couldn't handle the isolation that she felt when she was brought back, so instead of buying herself a massager she decided to put all the pain she was feeling on Spike because she knew he'd still love her through it all. 😀 He asked nothing in return and he was the only person she liked being with. She admitted she had feelings for him and said she couldn't allow him to be killed (for obvious reasons...). She DID insist she did't love him, but her basis for that argument was because he didn't have a soul so she couldn't trust him. Spike said real love was burning passion, and Buffy AGREED, but said that it would burn 'til there's nothing left. Was that suggesting she had a passionate, but not trusting love for him?

Anyway. In S7 she obviously loved him, so no need for me to go over that. What do you guys think? 😀

I just watched Intervention and I think it is one of the best episodes, especially for Spuffy. I'm sort of with Wishing Oceans... I think Buffy started falling for Spike at the end of that. She didn't fall completely, but that's where it started. With their first *real* kiss. It was the cutest thing.

I don't think she was in love with him at that point, but what she saw him do for her and Dawn was definitely a turning point for her in her perception of him. She saw him do something selflessly for the first time, and it totally changed her opinion of him. When she says, "I'll never forget it" I believe her. I don't believe she ever did. Even in her later disgust at her professions of love, she knew he could be trusted with her loved ones, regardless of his intentions.

Spike was the guy who'd always just been there. She hadn't ever really wanted him there, but he never actually left like most people she knew.
Very true. Spike was the only person who loved her for who she truly was, unconditionally. Even in her darkest places, he loved her. As you say, he never let her down and never let her give up. He told her she needed to "go on living, so one of us is living" and to "live already." If anything, he kept her alive in her darkest hour. He was always there as her ally and as her confidante, ready and willing to give her anything she asked for.

And yes, he never left her until he had too - to save the world. to save the world she and everyone she loved existed in. Even with his death, he died to let her live. He gave her the strength to go on living. Spike didn't drag her into his "darkness", he brought her into her light.

Unlike many, he accepted her as she was. He never tried to change her or force her to do something against her will (I'm skipping over SR, that's a WHOLE different topic) for her "own good". True, true. I completely agree.

For me, Spuffy is true love exactly for all the reasons you've stated. At least, love in the way I'd like to have someday. Where there's mutual respect, admiration, and affection between two people who are truly at the core, friends. (I have my personal doubts about the possibility of this kind of love for me, but that's for another thread). Spike loved everything about Buffy. Even in her darkest time, he still loved and supported her. Even when she beat on him and insulted him, he still loved her. As he said, "I always want you." He had her back, he was her shoulder to lean on, her grounding force to pull her back when she did something stupid. He defended her when no one else would, he allowed her to confide in him, he died for her. If that's not true love, I don't know what is. He was her ally, comrade, and friend.

I disagree about this. I believe there was always a fire between them. That's what a lot of their hate was based on, in my opinion. Most love/hate relationships have some basis in physical attraction. The violent, unrestrained passion she showed him in "Smashed" and "Wrecked" can only be the result of a massive buildup of hardcore sexual tension 😉 We know she wanted Spike (she said so) and we know she thought he was attractive, as she says in 'Sleeper' to that bounder guy, "sallow, in a hot way"?

Then, in S6, it goes deeper. They share a special bond that she never really had with anyone else. That "you always hurt the one you love" thing.
Not to be crass, but I think it's worth mentioning that Spike showed her a sexual side of herself she didn't know she had. He could make her completely forget the world around her. When she was with him, everything else fell away. That power he had over her became addictive, to the point where she was ignoring other things in her life to be with him. That's where it got dysfunctional. And yes, your quote is spot-on. Fans choose to interpret that quote differently, though.

She felt comfortable being herself with him alone.
There's a lot to be said for this. Up until OMWF, he was the only one who knew that she'd been taken from Heaven, and she didn't have to put on a facade around him. For her, Spike was peace. That's why she kept coming back to him night after night.

She didn't have to put up a false facade,
lol, I totally thught of the word "facade" before I even read this part of your post! We really do think alike. 😉

...pretend to be happy, or pretend to be ANYTHING. She just had to be Buffy, because she knew that throughout everything he'd always love her. She couldn't handle the isolation that she felt when she was brought back, so instead of buying herself a massager
lol, like the one Willow gave her in 'Gone'?

I always thought that it meant something very profound that she barely hesitated to tell him she was in Heaven. It showed that she trusted him to accept her. She couldn't tell her friends because she wanted them to feel good about themselves, but she could tell Spike because she knew he would listen and wouldn't make her feel guilty for not being happy to be back.

I just read this right now and found it really interesting. I especially liked what she had to say here:

Because we don't all watch the same show. Well, we do. But we don't.

This is SO true, but I think we forget it sometimes. Just because two people interpret a scene or a character differently, doesn't mean one of theme in "wrong" - it just means they view it though a different lens.

I, like her, am guilty of a "Spuffy bias" and it is a primary interest for me regarding the show - but she really gave me a lot to think about.

Seriously, everyone should read this.

Ha, sorry, I just realized I said "in love", when I met love. Not strong love like the love she had for Xander or Dawn, but kind of like her love for Tara.

After all, the literal definition of love is a "strong affection" for somebody. 🙂

Very true. Spike was the only person who loved her for who she truly was, unconditionally. Even in her darkest places, he loved her. As you say, he never let her down and never let her give up. Yup. 😀 Angel made her "Want to die" and Spike made her want to live.

And yes, he never left her until he had too - to save the world. to save the world she and everyone she loved existed in. Even with his death, he died to let her live. He gave her the strength to go on living. Spike didn't drag her into his "darkness", he brought her into her light.

I definitely agree. 🙂

True. I do believe that, as one of the writers (Doug Petrie? I think so, annoyingly enough 😀 ) once said, "there's always been some sexual chemistry between these two characters". There's definitely some sexual tension there, no arguing with that. 😀

But my main point was that although there was probably attraction there, it wasn't what their love was built on. It didn't have a passion base; It was built on friendship, understanding, and affection. 🙂

Not to be crass, but I think it's worth mentioning that Spike showed her a sexual side of herself she didn't know she had. He could make her completely forget the world around her. True, true. There relationship was definitely... explorative. 😀

When Buffy was brought back, it seems as though she lost her "Buffy" quality. The love. The passion. The things that made her different from all the other Slayers who'd fallen.

Without that part of her, all she had was her slayer side. And with Spike, she was able to look deeper and really find her essence. She was able to taste darkness and did for a while give in to it, but she realized that what she really wanted and needed was the light. And after a bit, she was back, stronger than ever. With Spike's help, she stopped rejecting her darker urges, and instead incorporated her slayer side and "Buffy" side into one fantastic, powerful, empathetic, less repressed woman who had a greater understanding and love for all the aspects of herself and the world around her. 🙂

Awesome quote by Daid Fury:
He's definitely, in many ways, her counterpart, and closer to her than a lot of the other characters. He goes to the dark side of what Buffy is. He goes to what Slayers are, and what it means to be something different in this world.

Yep. They were both outsiders, neither of them truly being "there" or anywhere, and because of that they were able to seek comfort with the other. 😀

I've been seriously thinking of revamping my LJ account. I think I'd like to take a stab at writing some meta or fan fiction sometime soon. What I need help with is a name for my journal.

Any Spuffy-themed suggestions?

True. I do believe that, as one of the writers (Doug Petrie? I think so, annoyingly enough ) once said, "there's always been some sexual chemistry between these two characters". There's definitely some sexual tension there, no arguing with that.

And Jane Espenson apparently had a post-it note stuck on her office wall that said "Buffy has sex dreams about Spike" long before they got them together🙂

Joan, will give your livejournal name quandry some thought - everything good seems to have been taken there! is there some random phrase from Tabula Rasa that might be appropriate??

Anyone have any Spuffy fic recs? Preferably long.

I feel like I've read everything that appeals to me at all the Spuffy archives (Elysian Fields, Spuffy Realm, Bloodshedverse, Sinister Attraction, Sweet Temptation, Nocturnal Light) and finding fic at LJ is more difficult than at the archives.

That said I know I can't have read everything, so anyone got anything to recommend?

Anyone have any Spuffy fic recs? Preferably long.

Amy, I have a few recs, but unfortunately they're short. I haven't had much time to keep up on my fic reading lately, but I did get a chance to read both "My Lady in Waiting" by Behind Blue Eyes and "Bliss" by coalitiongirl - both posted on The Spuffy Realm. I can't link to them for obvious reasons, but if anyone is interested in reading them, they're in the Recently Added section of the site 🙂

The first one is a fluffy AU short fic set in the Victorian Period where Buffy is human. The second one is really good, a oneshot and canon. It plays with the idea if Buffy and her gang had to deal with Jasmine.

Anyone read Angel #30 yet? It is out but here are some preview pages - http://www.comicscontinuum.com/stories/1002/16/idwfirsts.htm.

After looking at that I don't think I'll be in any rush to pick it up, the characterisation seems to be just horrendus!

Bring on Spike's return to Buffy season 8 - At least we know that Joss knows how to write him!

No, I'll have to pick that up....

The thing about Buffy and Spike is they understand each other on a level that nobody else understands her. They've both lived a hundred lives and I think there's a connection there that we will see evolve over the next couple of years where she realizes that he really is someone that she can trust, someone that's a companion to her and someone that really understands her unlike anybody else.

-- Sarah Michelle Gellar (BBC)

"There are very, very few people Spike connects with, actually. His connection with Buffy is one of the reasons he was so attracted to her.

-- James Marsters (12-03 Angel Magazine)

He's definitely, in many ways, her counterpart, and closer to her than a lot of the other characters. He goes to the dark side of what Buffy is. He goes to what Slayers are, and what it means to be something different in this world.

- Joss Whedon
