So many Spuffy discussions focus on Spike. What about our gal wonder?

Are we Spike fans or Spuffy fans? (I plead the 5th)

What do you love about Buffy? What made us and Spike love her the way we do?


I think Buffy was authentic. She did keep a lot to herself, but generally she was honest. And when she wasn't it tore her up not to be. What she did she did with her whole heart and soul. And she could be silly. I love silly people.
 
I think we're both. Spike fans and Spuffy fans (well, I am!)

I think Buffy was genuine, honest and truly wanted to make a difference in the world. She kept fighting, even though she craved a normal life. She was fiercely loyal to her friends and family. She was smart, tough, naive and vulnerable all at once. Basically, Buffy is who I always wanted to be.
 
Buffy is brave, and although having some difficulty to accept her calling at the beginning, she embraced it eventually, and is the true Slayer.

She suffered a lot, but nothing has made her ran away from her obligations, always focused on the mission. She is a good friend, a compassionate person, she is the protector the world can rely on.

She had a tough time with her first important relationship, and that scarred her for life, which makes difficult for her to give herself to love, to be happy and enjoy a relationship in its full - which sometimes hurt those who loved/love her. But she keeps trying, while managing a normal life in the middle a very supernatural environment - wich will never leave her alone and in peace, unfortunately. Buffy is the one.
 
I'm an everything, a Spike Fan, a Buffy fan, a Spuffy fan, a JM fan and a SMG fan. I'm primarily a Spuffy fan because I love Buffy and Spike together on screen, the chemistry is amazing. To be totally honest I find Spike's chemistry with everyone to be amazing, even the door in dead things. Any scene that has Spike in it is a great scene whether he is snapping at Xander & Giles, babysitting Dawn or having hot coco with Joyce, if Spike's in the scene I'm paying attenti0n. It's possible I like Spuffy so much because Spike wants Buffy and I want Spike to be happy. But I also want Buffy to be happy. I just don't think an everyday guy is enough for her. It's probably because she loved Angel so much but couldn't be with him because of a pesky curse and all that made me think she needed someone more than human but with a very different personality than Angel. Giles has a line somewhere about Buffy and her love for both Angel and Spike as being poetic, and I agree. Buffy is super strong, brave and resourceful and living a way weird life, she needs a partner who understands what she is fighting for and is as strong as she is. Riley came close when he was all drugged up and strong but as soon as he was mr. normal he really wasn't Buffy's type anymore.

I wish Buffy could have allowed herself to be involved with Spike, rather than fought it tooth and nail and punished him and herself for the attraction between them. Because she did need a special partner, not only matching her in physical strength but in smarts, wit, and who isn't afraid to challenge her or call her out either. Spike had all that. They were equals on so many levels. Buffy was action girl and Spike was action guy.

I guess it's hard to know whether or not pre soul Spike could have been all that for her if she had actually sought out a relationship with him. She got the chance when he had the soul but they ran out of time.

I think we should have gotten an answer on that one, and not had the ambiguous ending...but then I guess there had to be enough ambiguity for Spike to show up on Angel and not automatically run off to Buffy. Because if they had actually decided they were together, he would have gone to her no question.
 
Sometimes with all the action and drama going on I forget how much I really like Buffy as a person, and who she was beyond her role as Slayer. But in reality that is the part of the show I like the best, the characters, not the big fights, but I can still lose sight of that when I haven't watched it for awhile.

Same here .I like how Buffy doesn't let being a Slayer become her life but makes it part of her life . And that a main reason I don't like
the Watcher Council . I forgave Giles but not them .
 
Admittedly, I'm a much bigger Spike (or Spuffy) fan than I am a Buffy fan. I often feel like I root for the ship because I want Spike to have the one he loves, more than it's about both of them. Having said that, I do admire things about our Slayer, how could I not? However, what I love most about her, are her flaws (of which, imo, she has many). As a young girl, growing up alongside this show and dealing with struggles, Buffy reminded me that it was okay to not be perfect. To make mistakes. Because if someone like Buffy Summers could have flaws, then maybe I could be forgiven for mine as well...and for that, I can never truly dislike her, as much as I may sometimes want to 😉
 
Agreed . If it one thing Buffy taught us is it ok to have flaws because those flaws are what make us human . And those that don't have flaws are twisted by that fact since they don't understand themselves & the world.
 
I'm British - I have no 5th to hide behind. TBH, I'm a much bigger fan of Spike than I am Buffy. I watched both BtVS and AtS when they were first transmitted back in the day and without Spike's presence in BtVS, AtS would have been my preferred series. I don't decry Buffy - it's simply that I was too old to identify with her at the time. That said, without Spuffy there would have been no "dark seasons" - my favourite seasons by far. I like the complexity he brings to the series. He doesn't get everything right (prat by name, prat by nature) but I like his learning curve. If you allow S7 to reconfigure the early seasons (I think it's designed to do this - the text cites itself - intratextuality) you can pin-point the moments things go wrong and see the trajectories he/she could have taken. That's fun (if you have no life and few friends). The soul - don't start me on the soul.

Buffy herself - I think she was a good friend. I think at times she was a better friend to her friends than they were to her. I wish she'd had more faith in herself (no pun intended) as Buffy. She was confident as a slayer but not as a women and I think that's sad - I felt for her when she was at college. Willow was in her element, Buffy wasn't (fish/water thing). I think she felt a lot of hurt over Hank and guilt over Joyce - that's not good baggage to carry round. I like her where she is now (didn't much care for her in S8/9). I think the slayer life was too rule-bound and Spike in 6 was just a little too chaotic. The balance seems good for her at the moment. Back to the soul - in 10 she tells Spike he was good before the soul. I wish she'd realised it earlier - I blame the b***** Watcher's Council for this.
 
I feel the same way . Angel might have had a soul but he was quite . Spike brought some spark with him . You didn't know what he was going to do & that made for good watching . We saw that he had good qualities when he showed up & we found out he had been with Dru for a hundred years .

I also blame the Watcher Council for that since they never cared about the Slayer but only themselves .

To be honest - I blame the WC (hah...says it all) if my library books are overdue and MUFC lose. In fact, I blame them for Cantona and Ferguson retiring. Seriously, an incredibly patriarchal institution - I think Giles could only move so far away from them and I think this is what caused the breakdown in his and Biffy's relationship.
 
Well they are powerful so they might had made it so MUFC loses don't forgot 😀

And I agree with you on what caused the breakdown in their relationship. That & the WC setting up Buffy to die at a Vampire hands.
