Well, I guess I'll have to eat my words. The kid, in profile at least looks like the real thing. I'm not so sure about the expression on the other one, though, it's sort of "un-Spock." According to the Star Trek lore as set up by Roddenberry, though, in Spock's Academy and early Star Fleet days, he was somewhat overwhelmed by the mass of human emotion surrounding him, so his Vulcan self control tended to slip at times.

This might just breathe new life into the franchise. I'll definitely have to boldly go to the theater for this one. (Now, if they could just come up with a young Sean Connery for the Bond series...)

Actually the caption read "Spock showing his human emotions" so you seem dead-on with your assessment.
I am absolutely torn on this movie.

I am NOT an Abrams fan.
Alias never interested me, Lost bores me, Cloverfield made me sleepy (Gategod remembers how he felt my wrath!!) and Fringe first episode made me dry heave like a straight man forced into intimate relations with a fellow fella for ungodly reasons.

HOWEVER, while I have lost interest in Heroes, Quinto was a good actor, I adore Simon Pegg and I am a HUGE Trekkie SO I shall be watching this movie...

...but with due caution - if Abrams ***** this up, I'ma put a Trek style Jihad on his ass.

Alias, Lost, Cloverfield, and Fringe = EFFING AWESOME.
Just trying to imagine the tone of this thing. Abrams has said he wasn't a Trek fan growing up - maybe that's a good thing, having some distance from it.

I think he's said he wants to be respectful of Roddenberry's original style, intent. Make it optimistic, lighter in tone. Looks like it's about 80% there, with the original set designs, clothing. Bet he'll borrow heavily from the original score; Abrams' scoring is always so retro anyway.

What's the acting gonna be like? The original...really pretty overwrought, melodramatic, in classic 60s TV fashion. He'd have to tone that down, modernize, right? Otherwise...it's a parody.

Actually I am oddly optimistic. Yes, me! I can't believe it. While I don't have much love for Abrams style of storytelling as of late, I do think that this venture may not be bad. The one image of Quinto choking Kirk gave me hope. Maybe there will be a nice little story which happens to be character driven! Oh, forbid!

Must agree on character driven stories!
I'm torn for different reasons, I have never liked Star Trek one iota and had no interest in any of the different versions. While I do like JJ (Alias, some elements of Lost and recently Fringe) i'll give it a go. The cast looks quite impressive, loving the choice of John Cho and Eric Bana. Zack rocks my socks as Sylar so it will be good to see how he takes this on. The main problem I have with this is the casting of Scotty. I can't stand Simon Pegg (i'm sure he's nice and all but talking here in respect of his work as an actor) and the casting is just all wrong in my eyes.

I'll wait for the dvd and not waste my cinema time and see what its like, who knows I may be surprised.

Abrams is a good television writer, but his motion pictures leave something to be desired. Two different ways to tell the story.
I hope that they elaborate on Kirk's solution to the "Kobiashi Morue" (sp?) test, since he was supposed to be the only one in the history of Star Fleet to pass it. I know that he cheated, I just want to know HOW he managed it.

it's "Kobayashi Maru" =)

He snuck in and reprogrammed the computers.
Ok. Right. I'm almost over the freaky ship name aspect of the title. Almost.

I'm hopeful for this film. I think Quinto could pull Spock off well. Unless he just plays an emotionless Sylar, cause that would suck. I shall reserve judgement for now.

But seriously. Spylar? Did you have to put it quite like that?

I'm a huge Star Trek fan, the original (and best) with Kirk and Spock, so I'm excited and scared as to what it will turn out like.. Maybe they should just LEAVE IT ALONE.

To be honest, I didn't even know they were doing this. It looks incredibly risky especially since I don't really like Abrams' style in anything else he's done. The cast looks good tho, but I hav to agree with Faith, that I don't really trust Simon Pegg with playing Scotty. He already doesn't really look right. (But that's probably just me. My childhood memories are woven together by Star Trek, so everything different is not right, in my eyes 😛) I wonder if they're gonna make the special effects all modern, or if they're gonna give it a nice Trek-ish low-budget edge. Part of the charm is still, that it's not about the effects but about the people. (Something that's imo missing from more modern SF, unfortunatley)

I'm with FbF on the topic title... 😛

Well, I just started watching Heroes this season, and from what I've seen of Quinto, I think he's going to be an excellent Spock. I'm a huge Trekkie, and I'm looking forward to this. Although I'm still trying to equate Eomer and Bones. 😉 Also... not sure that Nicholas from Princess Diaries 2 (forgot the actor's name) is going to be that great of a Kirk...

I know JJ Abrams has a good record, and a lot of people whose opinions I respect and agree with tend to like his stuff, so I'm hopeful. Also, Nimoy had to approve the script, and I think Nimoy did a decent job directing stuff, so I'm hoping that somehow there is a relationship there that means good things. 😉

I'm waiting and snatching every new picture I can... and half of my reason for wanting to see Quantum of Solace (none of the reason is the name... *shudder*) is so I can see the New Trek Trailer that comes out with it (November 14, baby).

So, I'm a little nervous, but I'm pretty sure it'll be better than I, III, and V combined... Here's to hoping the Even/Odd rule doesn't hold true for this production!

EDIT: If they include the Kobayashi Maru... well... I shall be very happy. Hopefully they'll pay their respects to the book of the same title! 🙂

Also, I'm a little sad that Ando didn't get Sulu... I think he looks more the part than the current guy they have... Silly Heroes producers and not wanting to lose more than one of their characters!

if its nothing like cloverfield then YAY!

actually i dont want it to be like anything... just good.

(but i love alias and lost and have really started to get into Fringe)

Plus i love Quinto, as Sylar... im sure as heck he can be a good spock.

I'm not a big Trek fan, the only show of Abrams I like at the moment is Fringe...but I abolutely love Zachery Quinto, so I will have to drag someone to the cinema to see this.

I've heard good and bad things about this, but having never seen an episode of the original show, I can't be let down by characters not being true to the original show, or whatever. The only show from this franchise that I have actually seen morethan one episode of is TNG. But I'll be keeping an open mind.

I hate Zachary Quinto but hopefully he will not get more screen time than the other characters. I'm only excited for this film because of JJ Abrams involvement, I've never been a Star Trek fan.

I've never seen Star Trek or any of J.J. Abrams' shows, but I love Zachary Quinto on Heroes, so I definitely plan to see this once it comes out. He's proven to be a very capable actor and he looks the part, so I'm sure he'll make a great Spock.
