Star Trek! - There WILL be spoilers!

I realise I asked this question before it came out, but now that you've seen it... does this movie translate well for people who haven't watched the show?

Yes, yes it does.

One of my friends doesn't even like Star Trek but he was forced to go see it with his work mates.
He loved it so much, he's coming to see it again with me next week.

I think what is so great about it is the fact that while it has the essence of Trek, the inside references, its just a bloody good space movie, with phenomenal effects interesting characters and a wholly entertaining story that manages to please both fans and none fans without ever alienating either.

I haven't seen it, but I have been told that it does.

Anyway, I am not a huge fan of Star Trek. In fact the one series I like, voyager, most hardcore fans can't stand. CAPTIAN JANE WAY FOREVER!

I am a 'hardcore fan' and I adore Voyager...well from the episode 'Basics' which is the season 2 ender - before that, its pretty hit and miss.

YAY! Finally a hardcore trekie that loves it! Seriously, I'm pretty much disowned the mintue I mention that I like Voyager, and only Voyager, to most hardcore fans.

Yeah, the first season, like most first seasons of series, had issues. I just love the connection that the characters had together once the kinks where worked out. I felt like I was on the ship with them and I have to have that connection to the characters to really care about a show.

Ahhh its fine, see I think the problem people have with Voyager isn't necessarily Voyager, its that Star Trek itself was beginning to get tired.

For something to be appreciated you can't have it all the time - I mean, if Christmas was every day, as great as that sounds now, imagine how tedious it would get.

Voyager did embark on a mission that was closer to the original than the other series though, it really did deal with the unknown.

I loved the characters on the show, they were also closer to TOS. I mean you have Janeway who is just kick ass and takes no shit.
You have Tuvok who is logical to a fault.
The Doctor who is my favourite character.
Tom and B'Lanna, my favourite Star Trek romance.

The others are OK, but the above are characters I never disliked.

My favourite trek though, is and probably will be, Deep Space 9.

Lol, my dad actually has different names for all of them. First there is Star Trek the Old Farts. Then there is Star Trek Next Abomanation or to boldly go where Kirk and Spock went years before. Then Deep Throat Nine because of all the sex that he says goes on in that show. Veyger is what he calls Voyager because you can't really do much with that name, and both he and I agree with you that Voyager was actually boldly going where no man or woman has gone before. Lastly, there is Enterpiss because he just didn't like that one. Aside from Enterpiss, he means all the names in a joking way because he is a big fan. I blame him for getting me into Voyager in the first place lol.

I loved the doctor! He was my favorite next to B'Lanna. I totally agree with you on the rest except Depp Space 9 being my favorite.
