I read something along these lines in the Daily Mirror Today....

Producer Rick McCallum told BBC Radio 1 that writing will shortly begin on the project, which will begin filming in 2008 ready for transmission in the same year.

The series is set between Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith and Star Wars IV: A New Hope and covers the early years of Luke Skywalker. So, unless the writers decide to rewrite the Star Wars story arc, expect lots of scenes of farming on the desert world of Tatooine. Or perhaps not. McCallum said the series would introduce new characters and be "much more dramatic and darker" than the films

Which sounds a lot like the marketing blurb for Revenge of the Sith.

The TV series is likely to feature a different cast from the actors who played in the films. This, plus the fact the project will kick off after Star Wars creator George Lucas has finished with a third Indiana Jones sequel, make the Star Wars TV series sound like The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles.

Readers might be forgiven for thinking the project is inspired chiefly by the desire to extract more dosh from Star Wars fans than any artistic merit. Here's two reasons for thinking this for starters. The best film in the franchise, Star Wars: Episode V - The Empire Strikes Back, was coincidentally not directed by George Lucas who gave us a film based around a tax dispute, the risible Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace.

It may well be that the world is hungry for more space opera. In which case, we can't help but think that resurrecting Firefly might be a better option than further troubling Mr Lucas' accountants. Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith alone took £500m at the box office outside of the US, the BBC reports. ®

This will either be the best TV show since Buffy or the worst since Wolf Lake.

So, which Buffy/Angel alums do you see working on it(lets be honest somewhere along the line there will be someone and don't go for David Fury just cause he is on everything...lol.

I personally see Vincent Kartheiser as Young Han Solo
 
MAN I HAD NO IDEA 😀 i really like the animated tv series but its starwars so it would have my vote as a great tv prog 🙂 sweet but 2008.... want starwars now.... 🙁 ... ( swings lightsaber 😀 )

I'd like to see Tim Minear writing on it, but I bet the series will be a horrible failure.

hummm sounds familiar..... hummm..... me ??
I gotta say, i'mleaning towards failure, HOWEVER, i'll give this medium one thing,it allows the story to be properly addressed, so 4 years or 100 shows which Lucas is gonna read the scripts, write them too gives me a little more faith
 
I personnally will wait and see..Vincent Kartheiser as young Han Solo well there's athought...how about Princess Leia...?..Amber Benson...Stephanie Romanov...no no no i'l run away now lol i'm being silly, but the idea looks good.
 
How could this series not fail? Fans would hold it up to the same scrutiny as the movies. So unless they sink buckets, emphasis on buckets, of money into the the series no matter who writes it, directs it or stars in it the show will fail.
BUT!
If they develop a story driven series that totally stays away from the movie characters and theme of Jedi's and the Force. And it concentrates on the war with the Empire and the producers really push that idea maybe the fans put their microscope aside maybe it could work. But that would be one hard sell.
 
You see, i kinda disagree Teentitan.
I personally think the amount of money isnt the issue it is the writers.
My main problem with these last three movies has been the seeling out of story for effects.....
100 episodes at 42 minutes an epi is 60+ hours of story that i believe with the perfect combination of writers, directors, actors et all is enough to convey the perfect Star Wars story.....far more then 9 hours
 
That's what I meant about the buckets of money. The fans will expect the special effects in the series. The proof I'm looking at is like you said the last 3 movies were poorly written but they made a ton of money because of the effects which the fans obviously ate up. So to me regardless of the writing if the fans want effects and don't get it that spells out one doomed series.
So if the fans can get into the story before they realize the effects aren't there then yeah maybe you got a series. So that's were the delicate art of the sell job to the fans comes in to make a Star War's series work.
 
Ohh, right but still i dont think so.
I know a few fans, and each one of them was disappointed by a huge degree from those last movies, and i was on a site a year or so ago with Fans begging George Lucas to scrap as alot of the effects and pay for a writer that would do justice to the last movie.
Now, granted they have made alot of money, but those same fans were still mildly disappointed.
I believe that a fan WILL watch the TV show and would crave the same level of effect as say Empire Strikes back IF that quality of script was kept.
 
Well here's hoping that there is enough "story driven" fans that will keep it afloat if they do move forward with the series. I know I will watch because there just isn't that many series nowadays that are well written.
 
All I can say is... No. Am I the only one that doesn't think it should happen?
 
i think it would be cool, but you cant beat starwars originals dudes 🙂 but if george is going to prof read them then thats cool 🙂
