Me and my brother and a friend watched this ep for the first time the other night. I have watched the whole series through and am now sharing it with them.

They couldnt understand why Buffy didn't charge since ANGEL does. BTW we are watching Buffy and Angel together.

I told them my theory is she doesn't charge because she is a hero and this is her calling. And Angel is trying to make up for his evil past. Plus it would be stupid for both shows to be doing the same thing.

What is your take on the whole thing. I wanna tell them some or your thoughts.

Thanks
YCC

I think that Buffy could have charged the council or something for the slaying if she was desperate. It's not like they didn't know anyway, remember in s2 and s3 Principal Snyder was talking with the police and it was obvious the police knew what was going on. Also, remember Mayor Wilkins? I guess she could have threatened to stop if they didn't pay her.

^ I'm pretty much thinking Mayor Wilkins would have paid her to stop  not pay her to kill demons, but the later Sunnydale peeps in charge may not have known what was going on what with most of those that did know getting staked/eaten/exploded in s3

I think one of the major differences in their situations is that Buffy is a living, breathing, social security number carrying human, completely capable of working in the normal social situations that Angel cannot access. Her employment status didn't have to be defined by her calling (also, as it was a calling rather than a 'job' per se it's not like people were calling her to rescue them, she was just actively going out and killing bad things "patrolling") unlike Angel who made it his 'job' to help the helpless and therefore people paid him for a service they requested. Plus he had a staff to pay, whereas Buffy only had the scoobies - just a gang who helped out, they all had their own outside jobs (other than Dawnie) and so didn't need money from the slayage

Plus she's supposed to have this whole 'secret identity' thing, which isn't exactly kept on the down low if she starts invoicing 😀

I thought that was the whole joke, that Buffy scoffs at charging but we know Angel does.... plus Anya came up with the idea for it on Buffy and Cordy came up with the invoice thing on Angel.... since they both are similar characters that serve the same purpose.

I don't think Buffy should have "charged" people to save their lives; while she DID save many lives, she fought because it was her destiny to do so. Many times she was out patrolling & just happened upon a demon or vamp & killed them "because they were there."

HOWEVER... I never thought her talents should have been wasted at the Doublemeat Palace! Ewwww! - I mean, mediocre pay for a crappy job? She could have made much more money as a bouncer for The Bronze. I thought it would be cool if Buffy had a job that she could actually USE her "slayerness" to do the job. Or, to hide her identity, she could have been a professional female wrestler! - wore a mask... you know the type 😉 (Ok, I'm reaching, but it's because I'm in a goofy mood today!)

Yeah. I'm really reaching here to come up for a private sector job for which the Buffster is qualified... and I'm coming up with a bunch of nada. Fast food was pretty much her only option.

That said, I don't think it would have been out of line for Buffy to have demanded a salary from the council at about the same time that she got Giles' pay back.

waitress, checkout/sales assistant, any service industry not requiring a degree? she could do plenty of shift work in the day!
The real question is, who would she charge if she decided to? Buffy had by that time pretty much severed all of her contacts with the Watchers' Council, and, since the Slayer's mission is basicaly a covert one, she couldn't very well charge the potential victims that she protected. She might have charged Willow and Tara rent, since they were her tenents, but as far as her nocturnal activities, she worked for free.

^ I always wondered about that. They lived in her house, ate her food, and didn't give her a red cent to help pay for it. Willow did some chores and Tara watched Dawn, but big freaking deal. I would have charged them rent.

^ How do we know the witches weren't paying rent? I mean, aren't we assuming that they were covering the bills and all of Dawnie's care while Buffy was dead?

^ Then where did all of the money Buffy was supposed to have go? Remember:
BUFFY: Oh, it's ... just money stuff. (sits on coffee table) It turns out ... Mom left me some, and while I was dead, it got squandered on luxuries like ... food and clothing.

Although, technically, they shouldn't have been able to get at it. Cause it doesn't seem that anyone told the government that Buffy was dead. Otherwise, how could she have gotten a job?

I always thought that maybe Buffy should have taught karate classes.

It's not giving away her "secret" if she knows karate, is it? I mean, plenty of people do.

edit:
Oh and it annoyed me that Willow and Tara didn't have jobs to help out. How COULD they be paying rent? They didn't have salaries!

my memory of season one angel isnt that great right now, but like fake shemp said, it was cordy that started the whole charging thing. she needed money and wanted them to make it a business. angel had trouble with the concept of it at first; i think there was even an episode where that was addressed.

anyway, i think that just escalated into a totally different system that didnt work the way buffy's did. buffy went out and looked for any vampires or demons doing evil things, and killed them, thereby protecting innocent people and/or saving the world. angel's system was more like sitting at a desk and waiting for the innocent people to actually COME IN AND ASK for his help, or CALL HIM UP and request his services. buffy could have set up a business i guess, but it would have changed her whole system. she'd need a place to have it, paid employees (as Lily said, the scoobies werent paid), and she'd have to sit around a wait for calls. she couldnt just go out and kill a vampire, and then demand the person who couldve been a victim to pay her for her services. that would kind of be meaner, since they never actually asked her to save them. she was just obeying her calling. as another example, angel doesn't always ask for pay. when he saves the whole world, like from jasmine, he doesnt say "okay, everyone in the world owes me money." he helps those who come and ask for his services in return for a fee.

i hope that was clear enough. basically, im saying that had different systems, which worked in different ways, and to do as the other did they'd have to change their respective systems. kind of what Lily said, only a little different. at least it is if i said it right.

and as far as the watchers council, if she had wanted to continue "obeying" them, it would have been fair to ask for pay. but basically, she said "i'm going to do things my way, so leave me to do that." it wouldnt have been fair to ask them for pay then.

Obviously, the gang went to great lengths to conceal Buffy's death, up to and including re-repairing and re-progaming the Buffy-Bot to take her place, If the knowledge of Buffy's death became common knowledge, Dawn would be in custody of her less than ideal father, a fate that everyone seemed to agree was not in her best interest. To that end, it would have been simple to have the bot go to the bank and assign her finances to one of the Scoobies, Giles being the logical choice, or Willow, or both.

^ And that just makes me think less of them, actually. It's like stealing from a dead person. Actually, it IS stealing from a dead person. I don't see why they didn't just all get jobs and support Dawn that way.

You would think so, wouldn't you?
Possibly Giles was supporting Dawn and taking care of the household expenses while he was there and intended his half of the proceeds from the Magic Shop to go for her support, but for some reason just forgot to tell anyone. Then when he came back, along with the single sizable check that he gave Buffy, he finally completed the proper arrangements. That would certainly explain how Buffy could support an entire household on the crap salary she must've been getting from the Double Meat Palace.

If i were to assign her finances then i would go for Anya and Giles. They both have experiences in that field.

Overall idea of charging is not bad, but instead of victims should charge the town. I guess after Mayor Wilkins she might have some hesitation to work out arrangement with current mayor.

Had I been in Buffy's desperate financial situation, I definitely would have charged-- in that I would have made my job common knowledge and expected the bank/grocery store/DVD rental place/etc. to thank their lucky stars that I chose to use their services and comp me said services in return for making their business reek of slayer. For a girl who saved the world a lot, asking for a home and the basic necessities of life for herself and her crew (plus the occasional night out at the Bronze) was not really exorbitant in the least.

Honestly, I never understood why she kept her calling a secret from Sunnydale's most influential types. They seemed like the ones most likely to be targeted/harassed/employed by demons. Surely they could have used a little bit of Slayer on their side. I think the town owed her the opportunity to be a full time slayer instead of a full time slayer/ full time burger flipper. After all, it was sort of in Sunnydale's best interest to have a full time slayer who could actually focus on the work at hand rather than on slaving away at the Doublemeat Palace in order to NOT make ends meet.

Agreed, about the different systems and also Angel was charging so his friends could earn a living. He was helping them in a way but they generally didn't lose sight of the mission (aside from a few select times)

As far as "Buffy's money" being squandered away on food, etc... her mother had insurance, & that was the money Buffy/Dawn lived on when she died. I'm sure Buffy had some sort of bank account, & Dawn must have had access to that. So maybe she just turned it over to Willow/Tara after Buffy died.

And the idea of Buffy teaching martial arts is a good one. Karma for Buffy the Zen Master!
