Starz To Pull Plug On Netflix Deal
Premium Network Says It Will Cease Distribution on Netflix as of Feb. 28, 2012

Starz Entertainment announced Thursday that it will end its distribution deal with Netflix for streaming video over the Internet, effective February 2012.

In a statement, Starz president and CEO Chris Albrecht said, "Starz Entertainment has ended contract renewal negotiations with Netflix. When the agreement expires on February 28, 2012, Starz will cease to distribute its content on the Netflix streaming platform."

I specifically want to know what that will do to we Torchwood: Miracle Day fans? Just the other day I was contemplating erasing the episodes I've recorded on my DVR to make space for other things because I knew that Netflix was going to have it (I think they originally said there was going to be a 90-day delay for new programming). But now I'm keeping my episodes safe on my DVR!
 
Interesting...seems like a lose-lose situation to me. I wonder how this will effect Netflix; especially with the new price increase.

Yup. It will be interesting to see what the next move for Starz will be. I mean surely they can't really believe that this will boost their number of cable subscribers. Will they try and start their own instant streaming site?

I just read that Netflix shares have gone down 8% since they announced this break up. It will be interesting to see how they replace Starz.

Well according to the article, Starz Play viewing had already gone down, so they're playing like it's not a big deal. I heard on NPR that observers think this is not necessarily the end of this, that one of them will make another offer. I dunno. I am a Starz subscriber, but just recently, just to watch Torchwood. I'll probably drop it after it's done, and use their $25 off coupon to practically pay for my viewing!

How will this affect programming it already has? For example you can watch last season's Spartacus on instant viewing, but current season programming has a 90-day delay on StarzPlay. Are they pulling ALL their programming, including older shows that are already out on DVD? Or does this just affect StarzPlay? I'm kind of confused about that.

I don't know. I think they're taking it all down. I was hoping to watch Season 2 on Netflix instead of having to go through the hub bub of getting the channel from the cable provider.

Also, I hate to OT but RIP Andy Whitfield (the man who played Spartacus <3)
 
Really, really stupid on Starz part. Do they really think that people are going to run out and buy the DVDs of past seasons? Well, it's not happening until February, so maybe they'll strike up another deal.
 
I don't watch much of anything on netflix that isn't TV. I rarely watch movies ever... and the only Starz show I watch is Torchwood. So while I think this is a stupid move for both companies and I can't see why they would do this... I'm kinda like "eh..." about it.

See, I kind of thought that too (although I think my husband would love Spartacus if he took the time to see it), until I saw the last episode of Torchwood. Now I think I'll drop Starz but re-subscribe when the next season starts, because surely there will be a "next" season, y'know?!
