Still a Buffy fan 10 years from now?

I've been a hardcore Buffy fan ever since it started, meaning 13-14 years. And some people really look at me weird not only because I'm a "that vampire show' fan, but also because I'm still a fan. It is pretty surprising to me how fans of Buffy are still fans even after the show is over, and still being fans after so many years. And I hate those "fans" of other things who say they're hardcore fans of something but forget about their "fanning" once it's over and move on to the next thing. I'm proud to say that Buffy is not like that, and so are its fans. But... will it stay this way forever? Will we still be fans of "Buffy" 10 years into the future? How do you see your future as a fan? Will Buffy still have place in your heart? Will you still watch the DVDs, read interviews, look for what's new with the cast, etc? Or do you think 10 years from now it will all be forgotten?

Great topic! I'm a fan since 1999-2000, I'm online since 2002. I still love the show and love talking about it.
I will still be a fan. I will still be doing rewatches, and I'll still be defending my fandom choice. Whenever someone comes to my house that doesn't know me very well and they see all the Buffy stuff I can see the look in their eye of 'what a freak', and I have to defend the show. I will still be doing that in 10 years, 20 years and till the day I die.

Buffy isn't just a fandom to me anymore, it's an integral part of who I am.

I've been watching since the middle of s4 (Mom thought I was too young before then, and I kinda think I was too young then... I didn't get half of what was REALLY going on...) and I'll always be a fan. Buffy's a great show. There are still die-hard Dallas fans out there, and MASH, and all sorts of shows that have been off the air forever!

I've been a fan for almost 8 years now, and I'm not as crazy about it as I used to be, but I still consider it my favorite show ever, and I was feeling really bad about myself when I first started watching it and Buffy helped me a lot, I'll never forget that.
I'll always love Buffy.

A part of me thinks that this is difficult to answer because it depends on what you consider 'fan' to mean. But, will I still be watching and keeping up with the cast etc? Nope, probably not. Not actively anyway. I don't do that now over ten years on since I started watching the show.

The older I get the more and more indifferent I become and the more disillusioned I get with BtVS and Joss, everything really. I can say that I will definitely still look back on the show fondly as one I loved growing up but honestly, I don't think there will be much past that.

These kinds of threads always make me laugh because my responses to them must make some of you wonder why I'm still here! But I has my reasons 😉 😛

This morning, my mum asked me what were the three ultimate important criterias in a person for me to consider building a long relationship. One of the criteria was immediately: someone who either love Buffy enough to watch it with me or is tolerant enough to accept the fact that I'm a Buffy-geek and that I need my at-least-yearly rewatch. My ex-almost boyfriend saw once I had downloaded musics from Buffy. His reaction? "Oh, no, just no. Not that! It's not a show to watch. No. How disappointing you like that". I don't know how much he was joking, but I remember saying "What's wrong with it? It's an excellent, underrated show! I don't critisize your tastes, mister!".
The fact that I include Buffy in my vision of the future is either very scary of me or shows that the show will always be important to me. I don't know how I would live with someone who always critisize the show or doesn't understand I need/want to rewatch it on regular basis. It's just a "things are going to get complicated between you and me honey".

Since the time I watch Buffy, my love for it always grows stronger, which is the case with so few things! For example, I still love Harry Potter *a lot*, but not as much as before. I used to be a Tim Burton-geek, now I think he's okay, not some kind of God. But I never seem to get bored of Buffy. My last rewatch was a bit harder but I think it was because it was my third rewatch in about one year and a half. But then I watched Angel and my love for the Whedonverse was even more...Expanded.
When I'm older, I maybe won't like Buffy as much, but then it will be Angel. Maybe then I will be a bit fed up with vampires so I'm going to turn to Firefly or Dollhouse, to come back to Buffy after a time.

The thing is, Buffy has been such an important part of my life, I say so many times things from Buffy, I use the quotes so much, I think about the psychology of it so much that I seriously doubt that I will one day stop watching/liking it. No way 😀

(I think I do sound kind of fanatic. Oh well. I just really love it).

Totally agreed, my friend. But with me, they have to watch it with me or it's a no-go. *shakes head* lol

LOL, that's part of my criteria too! :D
I plan on showing the show to my kids from when they are little (approved episodes of course). I plan on spending my life with someone who enjoys Buffy very mich and will watch it with me and will either let me decorate our room with Buffy stuff or another room dedicated to just that... lol And I always plan on keeping up with Alyson and Amber... I mean, they both have a twitter, so it won't that hard. 😀 I'll always defend Buffy even though I am a Twilight fan. I still choose Buffy over Twilight anyday! I will defend my Buffy love til the end of time. I've got my mom watching it, and a few friends who enjoy it. My grandma never will, but she won't accept the most important part about me, so I don't think she'll ever accept Buffy. She's too religous. (No matter how much she says she LOVES DB lol) Yeah, I plan to be a Buffy-Fan forever.

There was this girl I got coffee with a couple weeks ago... I liked her. She was sweet and funny and smart and interesting... but when I mentioned Buffy she said "God that show is for losers!" And I said "I'm kind of in love with it. Well actually not kind of. Without Buffy, I don't know who I'd be. Certainly not this me right here." And I told her about how before I watched I thought it was a show for losers too. I was like "Buffy?! Really? Like Buffy the Vampire Slayer? Really now?" And now I'm like "BUFFY!!!!!!!!!!! BUFFY BUFFY BUFFY BUFFY!!!" And I asked her to give it a shot... just try. I told her I was planning to do a full re-watch and we could do it together... And she was like "No way. You can watch that show, fine... But I'm not watching it." After that the coffee was pretty awkward because it was kind of obvious we just said to each other "yeah... not a match" and we parted ways. Neither of us called the other and that was that. My cousin asked me what was wrong with her... he liked her a lot. I told her she wasn't a Buffy fan and wouldn't even give the show a chance. I can't be with someone like that. He said he didn't get that... that love for his favorite show, The Shield, wasn't a requirement for his girlfriends... so why would love for Buffy be a requirement for mine. And I said "it's what you hold dear. It's like religious people don't want to date outside their religion..." I actually compared Buffy to religion.

To quote Cait "Buffy isn't just a fandom to me anymore, it's an integral part of who I am." And it is. In Sociology class this semester when we did introductions... We were asked to give a few sentences to answer the question "who are you?" My first response, the VERY FIRST THING that popped into my head after my name was "a Buffy fan." I've been obsessed with many things. I've been very into many fandoms.... but never before I have identified it as such a part of me and who I am.

I was in love with Jeremy Sumpter years and years ago. He played Peter Pan in the 2003 live action version... I saw that and I was so in love. I never forgot about it.. And I still follow his career... but I'm no where near what I was. The only other thing I've ever felt even close to this connection with is Taylor Swift. And I expect to be a Taylor Swift fan 'till I die too. See, I was a Taylor fan BEFORE it was cool. I was a Taylor fan BEFORE Love Story and You Belong With Me. Before Fearless... and because of that, when she inevitably gets too old for this "cute young pop star" thing to fade and goes back to her routes... where she belongs... in country music... I'll be waiting for her. But even with Taylor. When you ask me "Who are you" I've never responded first thing with "a Swiftie." That might be down the list a little... but it was never a first thing... like Buffy is.

So yes, I expect to be a fan of Buffy 10 years from now. I expect to still be doing re-watches and still thinking and talking about the show. This is who I am...

Oh, about religion, the guy that critisized my Buffy-love was a pure Christ-fanatic (which don't mind, even tough I don't share that at all). I almost replied to him that I wasn't critisizing his love for God, but I thought it would be too much :D

I will still be a fan, but will I still be in a fandom? Who knows. Probably not. Will there even be a Buffy fandom still going in ten years?

I used to be pretty heavily involved in the Harry Potter fandom, from around 2000-2008. I swore blind that I'd never, ever leave the HP fandom behind... yet, I did. I fell for BtVS and suddenly Harry and Ron and Hermione all seemed a little less amazing.

I still love HP and it will always, always have a special place in my heart (not least because I made some of the best friends I've had through the fandom), but I don't have that same connection to it I did last decade.

So - yes. I will still like the series, I'm sure. I'll rewatch and look back on it fondly. But other than that - who knows?

Omg, you SO should have! That would be hilarious! I would have... It's kind of the same thing, the bible and BtVS, both fiction, but Buffy is just so much more interesting!

Ms.Trick agrees: Awn 😀

Thanks

Yes. I will still like the show and I'm sure B/A will still be one of my favorite couples.

Will I continue doing re-watches? Probably, I do have the DVDs after all.

Will I still read the comics? Probably not, but I'm sure they will still be on my bookshelves.

Will I still be involved in fandom? Who knows....but I doubt it.

Will it be forgotten? No. Not the show, not the actors, not the fandom, not my experience here on bb....I'm sure I will look back on all this fondly.

I am and I know I always will be a fan. I keep all of my Buffy DVDs and merchandise in mint-condition and the show's taught me a hell of a lot, as weird as it may sound. I've always loved watching Buffy and even Angel since I was about nine years old haha🙂 And I think the Buffy franchise and fanbase will still live on.

You're definitely right (; Buffy has taught us a lot and I know it helps when I've had a crap day. Spike's one-liners and Xander's foolishness always makes me laugh.

As weird as it may sound? Psshaw. You're amongst Buffyesque friends here, ma'am. Buffy's taught all of us a lot.
I plan to get a life soon, so probably no 😀

Seriously though, I love Harry Potter and LotR just as much as I love Buffy (HP maybe even a tiny bitmore, please don't kill me), but the Jossverse is the only (online) fandom I've ever been involved in. (Well. Ahem. I've been a member of a German Orlando Bloom fan community for closing in on ten zillion years, but I haven't posted anything OB-related in ages, I only go there for the community). But the thing is, you could waste a life here. I'm studying for my finals at the moment, and my average number of posts per day has gone up significantly since I started. I'm graduating next month, and once I get a proper job, I don't think I'll be able to spend as much time on the BB as I used to...

So, long story short, I'll probably still be a fan (I'm fairly constant in my affections), but I don't think I'll be as involved.

Don't leave! :)
I only watched it for the first time about three months ago, but I reckon there's a good chance I'll still be a fan in ten years - it's that damn good. I've been a Futurama fan ever since it was first on TV ten years or so ago, so I know can go for that long and still enjoy a show. There's no reason why I shouldn't still be into Buffy in the future.

Yay! Newbie! :D
I'm still a Xena fan, 10 years after it went off the air. And unlike Buffy, Xena has not stayed much in the public eye during that time. So I'm pretty sure I'll still be a Buffy fan in 10 years.

This is an interesting question to be raised and I've been reading everybody's answers and considering mine greatly because I know what I want to say and what I'm probably going to have to say. In fact, I'm still trying to think of the words that I'm going to use to describe it all...even though I think Amy described it rather well in her post.

To begin with, I'm a teenager...and I'm not blaming my youth for anything but I do move from one thing to another pretty quickly. I was a Twilight fan once upon a time, just like the rest. Although, I come into everything late so I suppose in some fandoms I'm not considered a real fan. I read Twilight after the movie came out but not before I watched it. I read it because I was curious to see what all the hype was about and for up to six months or more...I was obsessed. When I went through my first read it was all I would do from morning 'till night and I finished Breaking Dawn within two days. I would listen to the audiobooks on rotation after that and it was all I'd talk about with my friends until they got sick of me. I told them how much I loved Edward Cullen and then when I moved to Team Switzerland I would talk about Jacob and Edward and then when I finally transitioned into Team Jacob...Taylor Lautner was my non-stop topic. But after awhile I fnally realized how lame it all was and moved on...

to the Harry Potter series. Yes, it took me this long to read it. I read it for the first time the year before last and I WAS OBSESSED. I wasn't supposed to be reading it, I was a rebel and the stories were so fascinating that I read the books about ten times through. I talked about it more than Twilight, I would take quizzes and I started roleplay which is probably the one thing that has fully stayed with me. When did that fandom thing die down? When Buffy the Vampire Slayer came along. Don't get me wrong, I am still obsessed with Harry Potter...I just don't talk about it quite as much and I'm not too involved in fandom things these days.

But now onto the topic of Buffy. I have been a fan since September last year...September 15th and this is the only online fandom community I've really been a part of that hasn't been based completely on roleplay. In fact, it's rare for me to roleplay Buffy because there is no really good RP sites. I talk about it all the time, it's a part of who I am these days. I sing the songs, I plan to make my own versions of 'Once More, With Feeling' and 'The Body'. And instead of listening to Twilight or Harry Potter audiobooks...I listen to Buffy podcasts. Almost all the people I follow on Twitter are related to Buffy and I am so in love with Spike it's shocking.

But judging by my past...I'm scared that I won't be a fan in ten years. Is there anything to keep me occupied...well, yes. That is the only thing that keeps me hoping. I don't want something else to come along and distract me. I want to stay a hardcore fan forever and I don't want to let this go.

So, I'm not going to predict whether I'm going to be a fan in ten years. I want to show it to my kids, find a husband who likes and that kind of thing (although I do also want to find a Christian husband, not that I'm picky. And the two don't really go hand in hand) but I'm just not sure. But let's all cross our fingers and hope for the best. I don't want to leave any of this behind.

TeamSunnydale
wow, that's exactly like me!!! :)
I was a fan after while it aired, after it aired and am a fan right now. I'm certain I will be into the fandom 10 years from now. It's a part of me. I can't let it go. I's like one of my kidneys or something 😛

Well I've been an on and off fan since it started (I was quite young when it first came out), but since doing rewatches and joining the boards I've become a lot more of a proper fan (even if I do lurk more than post 😛 ). In 10 years? Yeah I'll probably still be a fan, when I'm a crazy cat lady I will make sure to make time for some Buffy every now and then. I feel the same about Harry Potter too, I think it's important to keep something that reminds you of what it felt like to be a kid, and for me those two franchises do that.

I'm a latecomer, compared to some of you. First off, I've never seen either Buffy or Angel on broadcast television, only on DVD or computer screens. I probably saw my first episode some time around 2003. And I wasn't a fan instantly. As I mentioned in my podcast, it was "The Pack" 1.06 that got me hooked. Even then, it took me a long time to connect with the fan community, partly because I live in a smaller city. I think it was listening to podcasts that made me realize what Buffy could mean to people. When I attended the Slayage Conference in St. Augustine last June, that was important in my "development." Will I be a fan ten years from now? Definitely, if I'm still alive. Sometimes I worry about the future of the fandom. We need more stories!
