Stop hugging your dogs

Obviously don't hug a strange dog that you don't know.

But a pet? A part of the family? Absolutely. All I've seen shows that dogs like to have affection shown to them- cuddling/hugs included, they're very tactile animals.

Cats I would be wary of too, because when a dog might growl or flatten their ears or bark to make its displeasure known, a cat with hiss and then the very next second lash out with their claws and yeowl at you. And that would include a cat who has been your pet for a few years.
Cats are gits.

Of course you can hug your dog, but you can't always hug your dog. Just like people don't like being hugged or touched all the time, neither do they. One obviously needs to be able to read the dog's body language, and definitely be careful about kids and dogs because the kid certainly isn't, and can't be expected to, read the dog. Basically, hug your dog but use common sense and respect the animal. Some dogs like being hugged, to others it's torture - learn it, live it, love it.

When I sit on the floor sometimes my dog comes to be hugged - she presses her body against my chest and puts her chin on my shoulder. Mind it's not lenghty hugs we're talking about here, just a moment of closeness. Then she'll sit or lay down in my lap and fall asleep. So no intense stress levels there. It's definitely not an every day thing.

She knows the command "hug", but that's not for actually hugging but training and she does it for food so she's quite happy there too because she likes performing tasks.

In my experience dogs do seem more skittish than cats, but I suppose it's because they need a leader, whereas the cat will just wander off if it's fed up with you.

I actually wish my cat was less affectionate 😛 she can be obnoxious in her insistence for cuddles, she will sit on my partner's lap with her paws up on the desk, mimicking what he's doing at the computer. Casually lies on top of remote controls and all sorts of uncomfy things just to be close to you. She'll run to you while meowing if you call her. Very clingy but fearless at the same time. I think someone sold me a duff, because she really is more dog than cat.

From my experience cats are def more cuddly than dogs!
Out of my two, Miowriah* is definitely more cuddly. She's on my lap right now as I'm typing, and has been for some time!

My recently deceased boycat though, hated cuddles. If you picked him up, he'd claw at you til you let him down. That was just his thing. If you tried to cuddle him, you'd get clawed. Miowriah does claw sometimes, but on the whole she's very affectionate. Sometimes it's annoying but it's mega cute.

*Names have been changed to protect the cuddliest

My cat Firefly loves attention and jumps up on the lap when I'm at my computer all the time. Wesker acts more cool about it and tend not to jump on when I'm on the computer but he snuggles into me way more in bed; he'll often use my had a s a pillow. Firefly loves lying on top of me when I'm lying down, Wesker's a more snuggle into the sides cat. They both love when I'm on the couch watching a movie too.

Neither claw ever.
