PORTLAND, Maine (AP) "” A Maine high school senior says he was denied his diploma because he bowed during graduation and blew a kiss to his mother.

Justin Denney was about to receive his Bonny Eagle High School diploma Friday when he pointed at friends and relatives.

Schools Superintendent Suzanne Lukas ordered him back to his seat. She tells the Portland Press Herald newspaper she was enforcing behavior rules.

Justin's mother, Mary Denney, says her son's showboating didn't break any rules. She tells WMTW-TV "a kiss to your mom is not misbehavior." She wants an apology "” and a diploma for her son.

The commencement at the Cumberland County Civic Center also was disrupted when a giant inflatable rubber duck and beach balls were thrown. One student was ejected.

Some parents want a review of commencement policies.

When I graduated, we were told if we wore pants or flip-flops, we wouldnt be allowed to recieve our diploma. A few kids were pretty upset. A teacher of ours told us they couldn't deny our diploma to us because we had earned it already. Kids wore flip-flops and as far as I know everyone still recieved their diploma, so this is very interesting to me.

That is a mess. When my name was called I went up on stage, jumped for joy, and I still got my diploma. My graduating class did the most. It was ridiculous. LOL
 
Mine was unbelievable unprofessional. The graduates were talking the entire time and people would get up for pictures and different stuff right in the middle of the ceremony. We were so like that though.

I'm not kidding. Some of them certainly are. Not that there aren't crazy people everywhere...


Not sure what to say. When I first I read the title I thought it was another kind of kiss although it said "kissing". This sounds ridiculous to me but I do not know everything. There might be details we won't know about. But for the moment. I'll just go with "there's some crazy people". But just to be sure they aren't totally crazy, he'll get (or have already got) his dimploma right? Just that he couldn't get it at the cermony? Which it don't sound like from the article.

LOL. I live like two towns away from this. I know that kid.
Some of my friends graduated there. Portland high schools are ALWAYS
having weird things. They got in trouble for having birth control in middle
school bathrooms, hahahaha forever! Gotta love Portland.

Technically, they can withhold the piece of paper, but they can't withhold your transcripts--and those are the important part, anyway. I don't have a diploma because my parents never finished paying my tuition (I went to private school on a scholarship, but it was still very expensive and my dad was out of work for my last 3 years of HS. I'm lucky they didn't expel me), but they still had to send out my transcripts, so I still managed to go to college.
 
This is unbelievable! If my kid wants to blow me a kiss at graduation, (and I'm certain he'll be too macho knowing him NOW) then I would be honored. At my graduation people were doing flips, dances and jumping around like half crazed monkeys. It was a mad house. Pretty sure everyone got their diploma. This story is absolutely ridiculous. Were it my kid there would have been a brawl...

That's the most ridiculous thing I've heard in a long while. There isn't really anything like a diploma here in Ireland, the piece of paper that proves we finished school is our Leaving Cert results and they are given by the State, so all the messing in the world at Graduation couldn't stop you getting that.

Yeah, same here for us in Scottyland.

I didn't stay on til the end of secondary school, I stayed for 4 years instead of 6. What actually happens at the end of school in the UK? Do we graduate or what, is there an event?

Looking back now, after some deep (shallow) thought, I think I probably should have stayed on at school a bit longer.

Yeah I read this earlier. I think it's complete rubbish! At my school, you could dance across the stage if you really wanted to. I think that woman is just a power hungry bitca.
 
This is ridiculous, but I totally believe it. At my high school graduation they inspected the graduates before we were allowed to go out (the dress code for girls was white dresses with actual sleeves and white heels and for boys was a blue suit--it was torture) and family members weren't allowed to clap, cheer, or make any kind of noise for their graduate. If we did anything other than walk up quietly in alphabetical order and take the diploma, it could be denied to us. These ceremonies are such rubbish anyway.
 
See I go to a private school and our policy is usually pretty lenient, at my brother's graduation everyone was whooping and if I remember correctly my brother even did that weird Star Trek hand signals to one of the teachers who actually did it back because well they were both very proud of their nerdom, I think on the last day of school at their farewell ceremony my brother even dressed up as Gandalf and was telling people "You shall not pass" as they tried to get into the hall!

That's nice...I went to a private school too and it was ridiculously strict and conservative.
 
At least you have graduation.
I like in England and all that happens with us is we go into the hall, find our papers that say that we've passed or failed and then leave. It's a really exciting experience *note sarcasm*
This story does seem a bit crazy though, I mean I've heard of loads of people doing stupid stuff at graduation like shouting 'f**k yeah!' as loud as they can and not getting in any trouble.
