Student with No Survival Training Spends 19 Days Alone on Remote Island | Oddity Central - Collecting Oddities

Japanese student Reikko Hori is in the news for choosing to be a real-life castaway on the uninhabited island of Amparo in Indonesia. After 19 days of complete isolation, during which her only companions were a spear and a magnifying glass, the 22-year-old claims to have returned to normal life with a newfound appreciation for civilization.

Hori quickly adapted to the harsh environment, teaching herself to gather food with the tools she had with her. She climbed the smaller palm trees for coconuts and broke them open using rocks. She caught fish using her spear gun, getting better at it until she was able to catch one fish an hour. The young castaway cooked the fish with fire that she made using coconut hair and her magnifying glass. Much to the surprise of the Docastaway team, Hori managed to survive right to the very end of the 19-day experience. She even caught a large lizard on her last day, and roasted it for dinner.

Now that’s she’s home safe, Hori is rather glad that the holiday is behind her. “Usually I prefer to be alone, but after I spent 19 days alone on a deserted island, I found a world without people was not the world where I really want to live,” she explained. “I learned I get happiness from being around other people. Not only sufferings but also happiness from being related with other people.”

It's like 'Alone' a tv reality show where 10 survival experts are castaway on a Canadian island and the last man standing wins. They are miles apart, abandoned with a few impliments and a camera. It's a hard life, but it's the lonliness that eventually gets to them, and the weather as it seems to rain all the time. The longest anyone has lasted is 66 days

That sounds like a great experience! Definitely a once in a lifetime kind of thing that would be really nice to do. I think living in the wilderness would be the easy part, being away from family and friends with no means of communication is probably the hardest.

Oh I would hate to do this in Canada unless it was the middle of the summer! I went for a camping trip in June once and almost half froze to death.

They always seem to do it in the middle of winter! I think they try to put as much pressure on the survivalists as possible. It looks horrendous, freezing cold, rain, bears wandering around your camp. I'll take a four star hotel any day

If it's raining it's likely more fall season, winter would be snow, but rain is actually probably harder to survive than snow 😀 (Seriously, I would take winter camping over fall camping).

I'll take the bears though, worst comes worst before you freeze to death they can cuddle you up! Or you know, eat you, but that won't matter much once you die of exposure 😛

This looks like great fun. I would love to do something similar - although perhaps with a few more luxuries.

I cannot wait to live alone again - but my "alone" these days - means access to the internet and chat friends haha. So I am not sure that counts... I have gone months without verbalising words or seeing RL people in the past. Now I have a house rabbit that gets all sad if I dont talk to it.

I love being in the bush - but I would struggle in a place I am not familiar with. These islands and those on Survivor look amazing! And plentyful for food - maybe easier than the canadian snowy mountains? I never thought of cold or snow being an issue 😛

I saw a cool hermit man the other week in the forest. Apparently he is a genius and has a set up in the karri forest and no one knows where. He is mostly seen at the bakery though, so I guess the bush doesnt fill his pie needs.

OccaQuokka,
are you sure it is a rabbit, I'm only asking as your name includes a Quokka.
