I'm watching Once More With Feeling and I just noticed something really funny during "I'll Never Tell."

After everything that's happened in Sunnydale over the years like giant Mayor Snake, crazy love struct women, fish monsters, hell portals opening, dragons, etc. the cover up is still holding strong. I know that the people are probably aware of what goes on but why do they still stay in town? Why not just move to a city that's less hellmouthy?

Probably because people don't want to leave their friends or family or have houses they can't sell or job's they can't leave/get elsewhere. Some people don't want to leave what they've been accustomed to for so many years. Probably too attached to move and too I don't know the word but to busy convincing themselves the town/city is normal.

I'd always just assumed that the Mayor had worked some sort of spell when he founded the town where anything unusual or supernatural that took place was forgotten by the residents as soon as it was over, similar to Glory's spell making everyone forget immediately that she and Ben were one and the same. (Though how the Initiative was immune to the spell was always beyond me)

I vaguely remember someone (I think Xander) saying "No wonder you can still afford a house in Sunnydale" or something to that extent.

So why do they live on the hellmouth, knowing full well things are screwy? Because they're cheap! 😉

Because to move would force the residents to accept there was something going on in the godforsaken town. (Which is I guess what they finally do at the end of season 7 which is good considering Spike blew the town up and everything...). But no matter how crazy things got, it was still home and so they were attached to it and I think it kind of ended up being a mentality of 'I'm not gonna let some vampires or whatever force me out of my own home' which I get, and this became just simple there-are-no-monsters denial.

I liked GATEGOD's post and Aussie's comment. Reminded me of when Xander pointed out to Giles how to say, what he'd said, in a word or two.

Demon's? nah, there's no such thing, or as Joyce put it, "so stop looking at me!!"

I just thought the headline was a tongue-in-cheek nod to the fact that there IS a conspiracy. It was a musical, after all. EVERYTHING was over the top.

Part of what feeds the denial is they never know the whole truth. I mean, even the police don't know details, they just know to cover things up that look suspicious. So, easy to pretend that...maybe nothing is REALLY going on, maybe its just them.
