Why would anyone want to live there? Despite it's warming name, the town seems haunted and the high school newspapers have obituaries. I mean, obviously something is up with the place. 😉

But I guess the Mayor made up for that by building forty-three churches, twelve cemetaries, an airport, international shipping docks, a train station, a bus station, a university, a zoo and a large museum. Oh, and a hydroelectric dam to power it all. All that for a town of around 35,000 people... And they say he's evil. 😉

P.S: I forgot the big honkin' castle.

Haha good point! The mayor had to reel them in somehow...
I would totally live there and stalk Spike. . . and get myself killed in the process.

I have no pride or shame do I . . .?

I grew up in a smallish town (150,000, way too small) and I always appreciated that Buffy was set in a small town since so many shows are set in big cities. It makes Buffy more relatable to me.

Besides low home prices, great home insurance, and a great school system headed by Principal Snyder, there is something Sunnydale has that no other place in the world has......

Willow 😛

Goby, you should be in charge of Sunnydale's post recession marketing drive.

Habit? Some kind of loyalty? If you've grown up in a small town then those might be the reasons for staying. There will always be a few souls desperate to get away but a whole lot of people tend to just 'remain' where they came from. The habits of where you grow up easily becomes sort of ingrained into your bones 😉
So if you grew up in Sunnydale chances are that your think a high mortality rate in high school students (or people in general), weird inexplicable occurences etc are perfectly normal things. Just stuff of daily life...

And Sunnydale had it's benefits. Vampire activity seemed to minimize other criminal offenses (perhaps most people were savy enough to go to bed at night) and they didn't seem to have a lot of gang problems e.g. I'm sure there were other benefits as well, but I would say that a lot of people probably remained there out of habit. A 'this is my home' sort of mentality, which makes sense to me even if bad stuff did happen there (as does everywhere 😉)

People rather dying by a vampire than pay a little more for a house somewhere else.

On the surface I think its a nice, though fairly typical college town, its only problem after all was the hordes of demons that would come pouring out of the hellmouth from time to time, I mean really when was the last time you checked the mortality rate for your local high school?

LMFAO! Smallish town? I live in the third largest city in Ireland. Population? 80,000.

I have nothing else to add, that comment just jumped out at me while I was reading the thread. Carry on. 😀

I'm with Kean - I was giggling at these posts and I always giggle during the show when they talk about Sunnydale being small with nothing to do. I grew up in a city with 4,000 people - I now live 14 miles south of there is a town of 1,000. 🙂

From 'Welcome to the Hellmouth':

Giles: It's getting worse!

Buffy: What's getting worse?

He guides her over to the wall and speaks with her in a low voice.

Giles: The influx of the undead, the... supernatural occurrences, it's been building for years. There's a reason why you're here and a reason why it's now!

That seems to suggest the Hellmouth was less active until recently, which is why the town might have been 'undetected' for all that time. Buffy's presence in Sunnydale would probably balance out the ever increasing demonic activity.

Realistically though, the government and the media would probably look into Sunnydale's high mortality rate.
