It'll become clear later on why Sam blames himself for Jess's death. The show gets a little like Buffy, in that they drop clues that they don't clear up until later seasons. There was a big one that gets picked up again in S4, and I was completely like 'WTF?!' I so didn't see it coming.

Yep, Dean is more of a ladies man than Sam is, but I guess it's understandable right now. Sam just lost the girl he thought he was gonna marry, and Dean's issues will become clearer in a few eps, which explains the way he is with women. He doesn't trust them, and he has good reason not too.

'Bloody Mary' and 'Phantom Traveller' are probably my two fave eps from S1, so I'm glad you enjoyed them. I won't tell you whether it's really Jess or not, let you work that out for yourself. 😉

Season One really wasn't that great, to be quite honest. I did love Amy Acker and Julie Benz's episodes, and the last few ones, though. I'm glad you're enjoying it! I'm currentley in Season Two. =D

At the same time, it seems to me that he feels deeply and truly for every girl he has even a one-night stand with. (Trying hard not to spoil!) Maybe he makes jokes like that to cover up the squishy teddy bear inside that finds it so easy to fall in love and therefore so easy to get hurt.

So, I'm making my way through the first season, and so far (sans the terrible travesty that was "Route 666") I'm really enjoying it. My only complaint is that the boys aren't naked nearly enough. 😉

Currently, I'm on "Shadow." So far, my favorite episodes of this season are "Bloody Mary", "Dead on the Water", "Skin", "Asylum", and "Pilot."

Really? As much as I like the sparse yet subtle humor, it feels like it's kind of out of place at times. I like the drama between the boys.

Note: I was surprised that they found their father so quickly (or, well, that he contacted them). I thought they'd stretch out that storyline longer.

I don't think it lost the humor... Actually I made a post somewhere online (not here) about how Supernatural is often a lot funnier than any other show on TV right now--that was after watching the "Changing Channel" episode, but it made me think back to a lot of other episodes, and even parts of drama-heavy episodes that threw in the humor.

The first season was okay but I kind of struggled through it. It was interesting enough but there wasn't much incentive to watch the next episodes right away. I bought the DVD, watched a few here and there, and finally finished after owning it for about 6 months or so. It really picked up towards the end of the season, and then I finished season 2 within a couple months. Then season 3 in a matter of a few weeks. I just got season 4 and, after about a week and a half, I'm up to the last episode. I cheated and watched "Changing Channels" after hearing about the premise--it didn't seem to give too much away, but there were some hints that made me really want to catch up quick.

It's definitely been more fun to watch since the arc picked up, but even the mostly-standalone episodes of the past couple seasons have been a lot better than the season 1&2 standalones. I've enjoyed going back to the first season though, noticing some things that end up coming back in later seasons, etc.

The gore is quite good though... And from what I can tell, they do quite a bit of practical effects. I usually hate blood and gore and etc. but this show pulls off some really cool nastiness.

I agree that the special effects/gore are really well-done. That's one of the things I like most about the show.

Yeah, I mean it's a dramatic show so it should be really heavy on it...but I just need a little injection of humor every once in a while or else it just becomes like a downer all the time. Just me.

But there's at least one or two funny lines/moments in pretty much every episode. Plus, there's quite a few episodes ("Bad Day at Black Rock" comes to mind - d'aaaaw, Sammy 😀) which pretty much only rely on comedy. I really fail to see how that's not enough humour. But to each their own.

I disagree about the humor, even in an ep as damaging as 'Mystery Spot' they managed to make jokes, plus 'Yellow Fever' is hilarious, 'Changing Channels' means I can no longer watch CSI:Miami with a straight face, lol, and 'Bad Day at Black Rock' makes me want to hug Sammy more than normal, lol. Even in 'Heart' which reduces me to tears manages to make me laugh. "Dean, always with the scissors!" :lmao:
