I'm suprised on how two shows with the same background as the supernatural and hunting them, yada yada, canfeel so different. (for what its worth, I like both shows.)
Sam and Dean are kind of like having two 'slayers'...it puts me to mind what could have been if Faith had just been rowdy instead of evil in season 3, and all the other scoobies died. Sam is clearly more 'slayer like' having the demon blood in him and having 'powers' derived from darkness, but Dean has been to hell and faced his own darkness plus he's involved with 'Angels' 😛
With Buffy I always got the feeling of family and home, trying to have super powers and responsibilities while growing up and having a somewhat normal life with friends and mentors and school....I just don't get that at all with the Winchester fellas, they seem more high plains drifter to me. It's fortunate they have each other (and at times Giles...errr..Bobby) so they don't feel totally isolated.
I actually see alot of similarities...dying for family, fighting a fight no one knows about, not all deamons being bad, the importance of family and friends. having to grow up quick and being exposed to walking nightmares incredibly young (dean more so than sam.) Big brother protecting little brother from his purpose like some certain Summers sisters. Worry over where certain unatural gifts come from, Romance between...well I won't spoil it...
To me the biggest difference is that Sam and Dean are hunted by the authorities, other hunters, and of course deamons too. They have no Sunnydale or Bronze or Xanders basement. They have a car, their mission and each other, thats it. (though they are developing a 'core four'.) There life does not seem nearly as happy. Maybe thats why it feels so different to me despite all the similarities. Buffy might have had some incredibly sad moments...but to me overall it feels more up-beat than Supernatural. Supernatural has honestly spooked me with its stories at times and that is something Buffy never did. It seems much darker to me. That is why I probably prefer Buffy more, but I really like both shows.
