Supernatural?

I'm very tempted to rent the first season of Supernatural. I've never seen an episode, though I really like Jared Padalecki in Gilmore Girls. (Yes, I know they are complete opposites. 😛) I obviously love paranormal and supernatural shows, but this one seems really scary. 😛

Is it really that scary? And how long does it take to get hooked?

Definitely rent it!

Yeah, it's pretty scary/gory. I never used to watch horror movies, but thanks to this show I can stomach them now, lol! Sam is the polar opposite of Gilmore Girls Dean, although if you watched him in that you'll probably spend half the first season going, "No, he's Dean! Oh, no, wait, he's Sam."

I was hooked pretty much immediately, but I think it differs from person to person. There are some iffy plotlines, but I find those easy to overlook thanks to the brilliance of the characters. If you like rugged, manly heroes doing rugged, manly things, you'll instantly love Sam and Dean. 🙂

IMO it's only scary if you get scared very easily and have not been exposed to many scary movies. But then again most horror movies don't really scare me, so maybe I'm a little too jaded. But it's a good show regardless of how actually scary it is.

In the first season I find it genuinely, watch-through-your-fingers scary. In later seasons I'm not usually scared (except when... well, the season finales) but some episodes are gory. Especially, you know, when they involve table saws.

I watch an occasional eppy of Supernatural & I like what I've seen thus far.

At least enough to rent Season 1 from NetFlix...

I know Jason A. from Smallville. And Jared P. from Gilmore Girls. I like them both, but favor the Dean character over Sam.

I don't know why so many people here hate on Smallville. (Then again, I liked Highway to Heaven...) Sure it's corny to the extreme, & sometimes the writing gets boring (so damn tired of Clark & Lana... I could just PUKE! would love Lana to COMPLETELY just DIE already) - but I really like the idea of Clark Kent as a teenager, feeling his way into young adulthood, and OMG, I fell totally in love with Lex Luthor (Michael Rosenbaum) from the very first eppy. The dynamics of Lex & Lionel Luthor's relationship is what grabbed me for that show. Watching Lex struggle to be "good" and just keeps getting badder & badder, all the while, seeing Clark as such a "good guy" but he has to lie & lie & lie to protect his secret....

And the eppy where Clark gets his "heat vision" was one of the funniest things ever (poor boy got horny & nearly burned the high school down!)

At any rate, I don't compare ANY show to Buffy &/or Angel. Far as I'm concerned, they're in a league of their own, and while I am starting to enjoy Supernatural, & I might even rush out to own the DVD sets... like I did Buffy, Angel, Firefly, & Smallville... I just see it as two different shows, dealing with some similar issues.

Yes, the idea of Smallville is quite interesting...unfortunately the writing, acting, and directing just make it a crappy show.

I love supernatural!
I allways thought its a updated buffy
Its got everything buffy has, they both suck you in and make you not want to look away, ive only watched season 1 to 3 and i cant wait to watch season 4, i keep trying to convince my friend to give it a try and borrow season one like i did with buffy with him but he wont... Please can people help me to convince him that he wont regret it 🙂 x

I think I would loathe a Buffy/Supernatural crossover...I've seen fan-fics of them but I refuse to read them, the universes feel so totally different.

R
Relic
the universe does, but some of the characters don't...latter Giles and Bobby for instance.
Supernatural

Now that I have seen every episode and have all the available episodes on DVD to rewatch I am even more in love with it. Anyone who says it is lame have probably only seen a few episodes or have seen the first season. The whole background story is so interesting. It has a great mystery from episode one that still isn't fully revealed. It isn't old though like Lost where you just want to say "Come on already teach me something knew this is getting boring." You have to really watch allot of episodes to truly get a feel for the show and start to understand the brothers relationship and the whole back story. It is very different from Buffy in that aspect. Buffy you can watch one episode and understand everything and enjoy it. You understand the characters from one episode and love them. Supernatural you kinda don't get the characters until you watch for a while.

Angelus, if it is a guy just mention that it has the awesome Impala, amazing classic rock, every episode has a new unbelievably hot girl, it is extremely gory, perverted, and there aren't any "chick-flick moments" and when there are they are understandable and not forced and fakey.

The universes are completely different, even if they both are based on the supernatural. So, a crossover? Nah, especially seeing how Supernatural has gone down the Heaven vs Hell road now.

The show: love it. But lately, wow.. it is seriously being dragged out. I mean, you've barely seen any progression in the characters. Everytime they overcome 'demons' from their past, there is another to take its place! And they're always moaning about something, like "dad was never there for us" or "why do I have to keep doing this?" I mean everyone has their problems, and I see how theirs can be different.. but it feels like they overcome theirs and then plummet right back into a dark hole. Buffy didn't even complain as much during the extremely short periods where she wasn't having sex. I really love the show, but they need to snazz things up. Soon.

=X

This may be taboo, or already discussed but I was just curious. What are your thoughts about Supernatural? I am a die-hard Buffy fan and once Angel ended I have been desperate for good television. I saw previews for Supernatural and thought it looked cool so I watched all the eps online. At first it was obvious why the show was around. 100% Buffy replacement. A show about people hunting down monsters appearing on the same network as Buffy started, coincidence? I think not. All the monsters were the same as Buffy's, it wasn't nearly as fun, so on and so on. Many things are synoptic with Buffy: someone gets sent to hell, is tortured, one day equals years there, something mysteriously pulling that person out of Hell for a mysterious purpose, having to dig their way out of their own grave, they pretend to not remember the hell experience etc.(Sound familiar, if you mix Angel being sent to hell and Buffy returning from Heaven this is what you got). But then I got hooked. The overall arc of the story is more in-depth, clever, and interesting then Buffy. Very edge of your seat stuff. But that isn't what Buffy was about. Buffy was about the characters more so then the story. Buffy reigns supreme over this genre of television (which Buffy pretty much created if you ignore the X-files). Supernatural may not have everything that Buffy had, but it fills in allot of where Buffy lacked. They use real myths and legends, an unveiling mystery throughout the whole serious that keeps you wanting more. Plus I love (as someone training for ministry) how they deal with the supernatural and God. Demons are very similar to Biblical demons, Angels, God, etc etc makes the show very interesting. Again this show is not BTVS and is nowhere near as good, but for someone who is dying for a buffy-like show I highly recommend Supernatural.

For people who have watched it, what are your opinions? How do you compare the two?

Honestly, I think the two are completely different storytelling. Buffy got into the mytharc approach, where most of each season was devoted to the season Big Bad. Supernatural does standalone stories with the myth entertwined. And I personally prefer Supernatural stories to Buffy stories because they film it cinematically. It's like watching a new monster movie every week.

!!! I love supernatural!!! I love the benders!

I thought it was ironic that at the end of the first season it got a little chick flickey.

I'm having a S1 marathon with my friend on saturday 😀

Ooh, Supernatural! I started watching a little while ago and am in the middle of season 2. I don't really see the Buffy comparions, either...they have completely different mythologies, and, while Buffy is much more character-based, Supernatural seems to be more plot-based.

To be honest, I don't think it's a legitimately GOOD show. The actors are pretty mediocre, the characters are kind of flat, and the writing can be pretty lousy at times. Still, it is damn enjoyable. Also, Jensen and Jared are very pretty.

Wait til S3. It starts to really pick up there.
Sadly Denmark only sent a few episodes of it, and never gave it a second chance. I really liked it

I love supernatural!
I never really compared it to Buffy this way, and I am kind of glad I hadn't just because I think it is good on its own, instead of being a replacement. There is no real replacement for Buffy.
But now that you have mentioned it, there are a lot of similarities between the two. But charmed had some too. I always ended comparing charmed and Buffy but that might be because they ran around the same time.
