I couldn't see a current thread for this. 🙂

I've just started watching the show on Netflix, watching the odd episode every couple of weeks. Only into the first few episodes of the first season and noticed it's very monster-of-the-week storylines - I get that, they're going for the urban legends thing. But it doesn't pull me in as much, I want more of the main characters and what's going on with them. I know there's a few fans here, does it get more into its own mythology the way Buffy/Angel does? I loved season 4 of Angel for that, it became a show for the fans really. You couldn't jump into it without having prior knowledge of who these people were.

I know literally nothing about the show, other than it has a big loyal fanbase 😛, because I've tried to stay away from spoilers.

Season 1 and 2 are very 'monster of the week', with a small over reaching arc that stretches until the end of S2. S3 becomes more arc-driven, the plot driving the whole season with the odd stand alone ep thrown in for good measure. And each season continues like that. S8 did go back to a more stand alone type of season until the second half of that season, where the arc kicks in and drives the rest of it.

I would say my favorite seasons are 5, 6 and 8 (yeah, guys, I know, most people hated S8, but I loved it) as the arcs are awesome for those seasons.

Some people will tell you to skip the first three seasons - DO NOT DO THIS. Seriously. There is stuff in the first three seasons that is still talked about now, you'll miss SO MUCH if you do that and it's really not worth skipping fifty-odd episodes just to get to the heavy, arc-driven seasons. You'll just end up confused.

I cannot stress how much Supernatural gets more into its own mythology. Honestly, it is an understatement of massive proportions. By the end of S1 it will have kicked in and it only builds and builds from there. The monster of the week thing doesn't last too long. Hang in there, the character stuff is coming and it is going to punch you in the face.

Thanks guys! I'll definitely stick with it now. Also, no skipping seasons - don't worry I wouldn't have done that anyway, what a silly way to watch a show! I can't stand people who don't show respect for TV haha.

I don't want to spoil it for [MENTION=8028]Bluebird[/MENTION] but I can just imagine the total and utter confusion anyone would have if 'Lazarus Rising' was the first episode of this show they watched. Out of context, it just makes NO sense.

Eight seasons CURRENTLY. S9 is being filmed as we speak, premiering the beginning of October and will hopefully be renewed for a S10.

Woah! I didn't even know this still aired!? I stopped watching around s5, not because I didn't enjoy the show, but with school I stopped having time to fallow a tv show regularly. Honestly I just assumed that the show eventually got cancelled.

So just a question, is the quality of the show still up there? or has it gone down hill at all.

I love it. It's my favorite TV show and I think it always will be.

Like I said, S8 is one of my all time favorite seasons. I loved the arc last season, I loved Sam's struggle, the second half of that season was just amazing television and amazing acting by both Jared and Jensen.

Supernatural is the most watched show on The CW right now. Caver, the new show runner who took over in S8, had an over-reaching arc for three seasons, which we're hoping means that it will run until S10. The top boss at The CW speaks highly of the show and the cast and crew, so that's a good sign.

There is also a spin off that will be - hopefully - happening next year, as it will have a 'back door pilot' from ep 19 of S9.

So, yeah, the quality is definitely still there as far as I'm concerned.

[MENTION=6332]Lyri[/MENTION], well you've convinced me! I'll try to start re-watching the show. I feel like I stopped watching the show right when things were getting really good arc wise. I loved the feel of s1 and 2, but I was really enjoying the developing plot about hell and heaven and everything in-between.

I'm also really curious about the spin-off. I couldn't find much info on it, but it seems like it'll be similarly themed but with a different cast? Either way, I'm interested in seeing where they go with it. In reality, Supernatural has such a big world that the possibilities for a spin-off are endless.

It'll be brand new characters apparently, that won't be introduced until that episode late in S9, so we have no idea who they are or what they'll be like. They have said that Sam and Dean will make appearances in the spin-off (if it gets picked up) so there'll still be a connection, but at the minute, all we know really is it will be some sort of family involved, but it'll deal more with the melding of both worlds - at least, I think that was what they were talking about, lol.

I started watching on Netflix about a year ago and loved the first 4 seasons, after that I found the characters less likable and less believable. I still haven't gotten around to picking up and finishing whats on Netflix.

Supernatural is a great show, it's not one I feel the need to discuss like I do Buffy and I can go through large periods I not watching it then binge watching it, I wated season 6 last year, first two .episodes of 7 as they aired then just binged watched the rest last month, gonna start season 8 soon.

To think of someone skipping the first three seasons is beyond crazy, it's like skipping to Buffy season 4, you wouldn't know what a slayer is, why their school blew up, what the hell Giles purpose was, who Angel is when he shows up, why is Anya so odd and who's the chick who steals Buffys body!
The show really steps it up from season 4 for me, but it's very much built on the foundation of the first 3 seasons.

ALso Cas is amazing and made the show like 150 times better for me, it's also one if the best show for meta stuff if you like that humour. Particularly the episode "The French Connection" - Its genius

I'm a huge fan of Supernatural and a huge fan of Castiel, but I'd never skip any seasons. I can't wait for season 9 to air in Australia and the episode " The French Connection" was awesome.

There's quite a few Whedonverse actors that make an appearance. 😛

You should definitely keep going with it. Personally, I didn't start to love it until season 2 when for me, it felt like the show really started to come together.

That's just crazy talk about skipping the first three seasons! Not just because you would miss out on a lot of back story, but you would miss so many spectacular episodes! I'm actually thinking about just rewatching season 3 right now. I haven't seen it in forever. And since I just did a Walking Dead rewatch, it's put me in the mood to see Lauren Cohan as Bella 🙂

Great show, I love season 4, 5 and 8. It gets heavy at times, I like waiting each week for the next episode. Absolutely loved the season 8 finale. I want to do another rewatch but I have done 2 since it aired and I have a heap of other shows to watch.

[MENTION=8028]Bluebird[/MENTION], the cast are really funny too, Misha/Cas has a huge fanbase and he is very involved with it. They go to conventions together and the twitter banter is hilarious. When you're caught up you should follow them, good for a laugh.

I love, love Supernatural, and watch it religiously.
I would recommend watching it from the beginning. It does develop continuity, but it takes a couple seasons. For me, it was the opposite-I was engaged in it right away, and it's the only show that I've found that I love even half as much as Buffy.

Both the guys are great, but Dean... well, he's something else altogether. He reminds me a lot of Buffy-he's tragically flawed, brave, selfless and I think with time you'll become as invested in him as I have. He is an incredibly layered and complex character who goes through an incredible evolution.

Yes, the show does have a rich and complicated mythology that's pretty interesting, involving some interesting religious subtext..angels, demons, God...the whole lot! Also, the boys are HILARIOUS and play really well off each other. The most interesting aspect o the show is their often strained relationship.

If I've learned anything from this thread it is that Supernatural fans are very dedicated. Obsessive some might say. 😉 But seriously, I love when shows bring out such passions in people! Reminds me of the Buffy fandom.
