Does Anya not recollect any of the events The Wish? When Buffy asked her about alternate realities, why did she not understand what Buffy was getting at?

"Sure. Alternate realities. You
could have, like, a world without
shrimp. Or with, you know,
nothing but shrimp."

Surely she would have understood what Jonathan had done when Buffy asked her but still pretended she had never encountered it before?

I love when Illyria mentions the world with nothing but shrimp
Anya being under a spell like the rest of them, might not be seeing it like that. She wouldn't be understanding that they were in an alternate dimension.

see thats what i don't get. Anya retains memories when she creates the alternate realities. So how come she forgot the aspects of The Wish? Unless Johnathan screwed with her past aswell, but this is highly unlikely as the he only wanted to be respected by everyone thus making it necessary for him to alter only key moments in Buffy's life, not some random (or random in his perspective) like Anya. This is really starting to bug me.

It's possible that because Jonathan didn't know about the Wishverse, it didn't exist in his alternate universe. Or it could have just been Anya being a flake. XD

For Jonathen's alternate reality to work, EVERYONE had to be under his spell. He couldn't have people believing he did all these amazing things from fighting to starring in the Matrix if only Buffy and her closest friends were under his spell.

In The Wish, it is clearly seen that Anya is very surprised that she lost her abilities. Because she can't remember the other reality in where her amulet got smashed by Giles. When she tries to fulfil Cordelia's wish, she looks very surprised that it doesn't work.

Maybe she remembered afterwards, but wouldn't she had been very mad at Giles, maybe even tried to hurt him, if she had remembered?

The only thing we see in Doublegangland is that she has been able to locate her amulet, not if she remembers anything or not. She could have just done a locating spell.

I stand by that if she had known it was Giles' fault she was powerless, we would see some revenge.

Anya: (dramatically) For a thousand years I wielded the powers of The Wish. I brought ruin to the heads of unfaithful men. I brought forth destruction and chaos for the pleasure of the lower beings. I was feared and worshipped across the mortal globe. (disgustedly) And now I'm stuck at Sunnydale High. (despondently) Mortal. Child. And I'm flunking math.

D'Hoffryn: (dismissingly) This is no concern of ours. You will live out your mortal life and die.

Anya: (pleadingly) Give me another chance. You can fold the fabric of time. Send me back to that place and I'll change it. I won't fail again.

Anya: (unafraid) 'Cause he thinks you're someone else. He thinks you're the Willow that belongs in *this* reality.

Evil Willow: (confused) Another me?

Anya: You know this isn't your world, right? I mean, you know you don't belong here.

Evil Willow: (softly) No. This is a dumb world. (smiles wistfully) In my world there are people in chains, and we can ride them like ponies.

Anya: (states the obvious) You wanna get back there.

Evil Willow: (nods mournfully) Yeah.

Anya: So do I.

Regardless of how much detail she remembered, she knew there was an alternate reality, and she knew that it was the reason she had lost her power. I'd say she remembered a good chunk of it, considering her conversation with Vampire!Willow.

I think D'Hoffryn told her the cliff notes, that she had lost her powers in a different reality, or maybe she figured it out herself, that in the different reality she had tried to create, something went wrong. So she did the spell to reach between dimensions to get the amulet. And when vampire Willow walked in, she figured that the failed spell she did before with Willow had sideeffects. Then she quickly thought of a way to turn this into her advantage.

But we can't know. Your guess is as good as mine.

Back on topic, I don't remember Anya being that lost when it comes to alternative dimensions. She answered pretty quickly, didn't she?

Of course, since I believe she doesn't remember anything from The Wish, her acting like it wasn't a big thing... isn't a big thing. Usually she would have remembered the reality she created, as we cleary see in her scene with Giles in The Wish, where she speaks of how exciting this new world is. But since the spell broke, and everything returned to how it was, there's no reason for her to remember, since it was reversed.

I think it's probable that Anya remembers that she had made an alternate reality in The Wish. She knew, after all, that something had happened when Cordelia wished Buffy had never come to Sunnydale that resulted in the loss of her amulet...I'm sure she connected the dots. But she probably didn't remember the details. Regardless, Anya has probably made hundreds or thousands of alternate realities over the years. It can be argued that every wish someone made to her created an alternate reality. And so she DID have a very good understanding of these alternate realities, regardless of whether or not she remembers what happened in The Wish.

The reason why she seems confused by Buffy's questioning is the nature of Jonathan's spell, I believe. She's not supposed to catch on, because Buffy is insinuating that the world they live in is questionable..which of course fights against the very essence of the spell. People under this spell aren't supposed to question, or feel out of place, or wonder why everything is happening, and so Anya cannot understand why Buffy is asking these questions, even though she has a perfect understanding of alternate realities.

That makes the most sense so far.
Anya: (pleadingly) Give me another chance. You can fold the fabric of
time. Send me back to that place and I'll change it. I won't fail again.

^ From Doppelgangland. Anya was well aware that she had created an alternate universe otherwise she would not ask D'hoffren to send her back there to get her amulet. She also is aware of what was in that alternate universe as she recognises vamp willlow and knows where she came from.

As for Johnathon, im guessing part of his spell was to stop people with a knowledge of alternate universes from remebering anything otherwise they might realise they were in one. Jonathon during that spell altered so many peoples memories to his advantage and could have easily alltered Anya's to not fully understand alternate universes, or at least not enough to be able to stop him from having his.

The way I see it is that Jonathon not only altered moments in Buffy's life, he made an entirely new world and to do that means tampering with everyone. Anya was idolized Jonathon so much that she may not have even thought about the possibility of it all being fake. The whole point of that reality was for everyone to love Jonathon and with that kind of love comes a certain level of devotion and trust. People trusted Jonathon blindly and they all loved him too much to question it.

Nah, Anya couldn't be bothered by Jonathon's little power trip, she had much more important things to think of, like why she flunked Y12 maths. Or maybe it was her meal, she had spaghetti numbers the previous night.

Maybe she didn't recognize Vamp Willow, but she figured out that since she had done a spell with regular Willow earlier that day, vamp Willow was now a sideeffect of the spell. Anya could probably see that vamp Willow had no idea what this world's Oz was talking about, thus figuring out vamp Willow didn't belong.

This can be explained a couple different ways.

1) Anya does not recognize VampWillow on a personal level, but is able to deduce that she is from an alternate reality. She is also able to deduce (and this may even be a lot of wishful thinking on Anya's part) that she is from the alternate reality created right before Anya lost her powers. She knows that Cordelia wished that Buffy had never come to Sunnydale; she knows that this wish and the world it created led to her amulet being destroyed; she suddenly sees a vampire version of Willow, who clearly does not belong in this reality; pretty much two plus two at this point.

2) Earlier in this episode, Anya had tried to get Willow to help her retrieve her amulet from the alternate reality. (Again, she knows she created one because of Cordelia's wish and the fact that her powers were destroyed.) During that spell, they got glimpses of that alternate reality, including VampWillow. Anya recognizes VampWillow from these glimpses and knows she belongs in the reality Anya created before losing her powers.

I think Anya does remember about alternate realities - the shrimp speech was was just her supid lame way of explaining it.

Maybe as Anya became more attached to her human persona, certain details of other realities slipped from her mind?

Or maybe she just didn't feel the need to bring it up. She was in with Xander and didn't want to remind him about the time she got him and all his friends either killed or sired?

Which would be strange given her usual tactless behavior, but still.. you never know.
