Surely the most underrated season...

Just throwing this out there- I believe their first (off screen) kiss was before the ep with the candle, but that's just me. Their behavior in that ep tells me that it's been going on for a while, since 'Hush' at the very least. Faith also points it out in 'Who Are You?' that there's something between them. Maybe it's just the chemistry she's seeing, but Tara's blush suggests - to me at least - that it's gone a lot further than lingering looks by that point.

Like I said, just my opinion.

Yeah, that's the impression I got to.

Fair point. It's all up to interpretation
I'm re-watching Season 4 atm and in "Doomed", Willow claims she's not a nerd because she's "dating a musician ... or at least I was", so I doubt she'd kissed Tara off-screen in "Hush" 'cos she seems to me to still be mostly in Oz-mode. I do agree though, that stuff had most definitely been going on off-screen pre-"New Moon Rising".

Hahahahaha. Brilliant. As for the homophobic network guys - apparently the kiss in 5 the network were dead against according to Whedon. Apparently, he'd even cleared his desk and was going to pull the plug unless they ran with that scene and at the 11th hour they okayed it.

From what I heard the network guys were against it, but it really didn't take that much to convince them. Apparently Joss just said that it was happening no matter what, and they said "fine". He also threatened not to air the episode, not to pull the plug entirely.

He said that in one of his interviews, honestly I have no clue which one, so unfortunately I don't have a source.

I thought Season 5 was a fandom favourite along with 3? Maybe it was just where i was frequenting! Personally, it's my joint second favourite.

I really love Dawn and the Glory storyline. I even don't mind Spike too much. My one negative that i can think of right now though is the shitty way they got rid of Riley. I was fine with them dropping him but it seemed like they made him act out of character etc. just cos he wasn't popular. Oh and the Knights of Byzantium were a weird addition.

If anything, i think season 4 is underrated. It's very much a bridge season between the high school years and the adult years. And yes the main arc/big bad is weak, but there are so many strong episodes and i really enjoy the whole college thing.

I have only seen season 5 as a whole once and I got bored of it very quickly and didn't pay much attention. I've seen a few episodes a couple times but I don't really like it, I put it at my bottom 3 least favorite seasons. Right now I'm at the end of season 4 on my rewatch so I'm going into season 5 hoping I will enjoy it more. the things I remember I didn't like the first time were Dawn, Glory/Ben plot and Spike's development.

I agree. I actually really like season 4, there are a lot of good episodes and even in the bad ones I find things I like. I mostly just look over the whole Adam/Initiative thing anyways and just go with it.

Season 5 is actually my personal favorite season. To me, it was Buffy at her heroic peak, I loved the familial bond the Scoobies displayed here more than any other season, and Joyce's illness and death, and the aftermath of both were portrayed masterfully.

One of the main things I like about this season is that, once Riley leaves, there isn't much for Buffy on the romance front. I think this is the only season you can really say that about. Aside from a brief Bangel scene in "Forever" (which I loved, don't get me wrong) and Spike's at-the-time one-sided infatuation, the season's focus is largely on Buffy, her sister and her mother. I like romance as much as the next person, but it's not the only thing that drew me to this series, and I'm glad we didn't really have to bother with it in the second half.

I also loved Glory. She's definitely not the best Buffyverse villain; she is surpassed by Angelus (duh), the Mayor, Wolfram and Hart and most of AtS's villains. But she was fun in a campy sort of way, and a breath of fresh air after the boring Adam. I think she fit the themes of the season pretty well, and a lot of gods from mythology were really self involved and none too bright, so hey, accuracy.

It was the last "real" BtVS season for me, as this was the last time all the BtVS characters were even remotely endearing. The move to UPN and the semi-loss of Joss can really be felt post-"the Gift."

Season 5 is my favorite season of Buffy, even more than 3. So many things about it are fantastic. Glory is my favorite big bad, the Key arc was extremely compelling, the plot twists were fun and kept my on edge and guessing about what would happen next, there were a lot of really strong episodes, some of the best in the entire series (The Body, the Gift, and a few others whose names I can't remember...Season 4 and 5 both had a disproportionate amount of the very best individual episodes IMO, many many good individual episodes).

Dawn? I adore Dawn. I'll admit she got to be a little annoying in Season 6, but in Season 5 I never once thought to myself that she was annoying while I watched it. I don't get why people say that, at least about S5 Dawn, I really don't. On top of that I really like her character and plot contribution and development from S5. I feel strongly about defending her, partly because so many people hate on her and I don't get where they are coming from.

And some of MT's performances in some S5 episodes are incredible. Like the episode Blood Ties where Dawn figures out she's the key and has the confrontation of sorts with Glory at the end. There are other episodes in S5 too that I thought to myself, "wow, this is an incredible performance, especially for someone so young." MT crushes it in quite a few episodes. Overall she was amazing.

Season 5 also has arguably the best acting performances from Sarah and Alyson too. Tara finally gets serious development and a greater role in the show, The Tara and Willow ship gets developed and the choice by the writers to do that really capitalized on the great and believable chemistry that existed between those two on screen, the writing in general is of such a consistently good quality in Season 5, Anya and Spike are both at their best in S5 too, I could go on and on about this season.

I like Glory (and the actress) a lot; I enjoyed the combination of her great godly power with her fatal character flaws. As a God in her proper and appropriate dimension, I imagine her character flaws would never have mattered or been a liability, and maybe she developed them over the many years of being an undisputed master. But I like how her personality traits translated into corporeal human form become fatal flaws, most of all because she doesn't know it, because she's never been in human form before and has always taken her invulnerability for granted, because she always could. It makes for a very interesting Big Bad if you ask me. I like many of Glory's soliloquys and boasting, partly because they are well written and partly because I really find fascinating the thought process of someone who is a type of God. It's not something you encounter every day! I really like all of Glory's interactions with Dawn throughout season 5, especially towards the end. I also like Ben insofar as the situation between Ben sharing a body with Glory effected Glory's psychology. And on and on.

The Knights of Byzantium were okay, I actually really kind of liked the idea but I didn't like as much the execution. I liked the added element of other good guys involved that were coming from a different position and were therefore bad guys in a way and at odds with the other good guys, the scoobies. I like the devout/pious and strict code-adhering and implied nobility of them. I wish the execution had been a little different though and that there had been more time to flesh out the details of them.

And I just realized I've been off topic the entire time and that I haven't even addressed the original topic.

My impression (at least on this forum) is that S3 is by a very wide margin the most popular choice for favorite season. After that, it might possibly be S2 by a slim margin over S5, or they might be tied. No one claims Season 1 as their favorite, a few people claim Season 4 as their favorite, a small but dedicated minority claim Season 6 as their favorite, and no one at all really claims Season 7 as their favorite. All this is just to say that Season 5 really isn't underrated, according to my observations, at least here on this forum. We could settle it once and for all with a poll to see who is second place. Maybe I'll do that myself.

Possbly five is underrated because it seems like the bit in the middle. 1-3 are very much one chapter, and four is a start of a new chapter with very distinct themes (whether the themes all work seem to be up for debate😳). So then theme wise I think Five comes off as a stop gap season, before you hit the heavyiness of 6 and 7 (which again maybe have degrees of success). On the second viewing of the season I liked it much more, and can see why it could be one of the best. First off all unlike six you do get a far greater balance between comedy, drama, darkness, fantastical and romance (there is a little of that if not much). For me the season has a slow start (the conclusion of the Riley story was just weak), and a bit of an overblown ending (minus the Gift which maybe one of the best ever episodes), but over the course actually does develop the themes and characters very well while moving forward with things like the Dawn/Key storyline, even if it doesn't quite work, it is still a very interesting storyline. And Glory is one of the most badass and entertaining Villains without doubt!😀 So a slightly understated season (apart from the ending), but IMO all the better for it.

If we're talking solely in terms of "most underrated," I would say S1 fits the bill. I noticed that it often gets ranked as one of the worst seasons, which I think is categorically unfair. Not only did it have only half as many episodes as later seasons, it was also the establishing season so the writers hadn't fully gotten into their groove, nor had the characters been fully fleshed out yet. Also, the budget was probably the lowest this season, which means it's obviously going to have the cheesiest visual effects, etc. For a freshman season, I thought S1 was awesome. It has compelling characters, witty writing, and wonderfully campy horror elements. Also, I personally think seasons 1-3 were the creative apex of the entire series. Put simply, S1 was just fun television through and through, despite the deficiencies and disadvantages that often earn it one of the lowest spots on "Ranking the Seasons of BTVS" lists.

I don't think S5 is underrated at all. Like a lot of others on this forum and elsewhere, I thought it was a particularly strong season, and it is often acknowledged as such. By definition, that is not what it means to be underrated. For further comparison, seasons 4 and 6 tend to be rather divisive: people either hate them or love them. Again, this does not mean they are underrated and don't get recognition where it is due; it just means fans are divided on whether they were good at all. In contrast, I think S1 is often overlooked and does not get the credit it deserves. It was, after all, the season that started it all (if you don't think about the film).
