There are alot of things we all know are healthy for us, like eating fruit and vegetables, doing regular exercise etc, but what about the more surprising healthy things?

For instance, supposedly dark/plain chocalate is good for you because it's high in anti-oxidants, yet we don't get educated in this at school when they talk about healthy foods.

Also, what's unhealthy about eating chips? For some reason they don't count as a vegetable portion, but they're just about as good as potatoes as far I'm concerned, so I always count them as one of my vegatable portions.

What other surprising things are there food-wise or activity-wise that you think are good for your health but that no one educates us about the benefits of for some reason?

Guinness and wine are good for you in small quantities, that's quite cool if you like either of them.

I remember on QI they said that people who drink moderate amounts of alcohol have longer life-expectancies than tea-totallers
A lot of people don't realize how good snacking on nuts is for you. If you stick to unsalted nuts, they make a good snack. 🙂

I suppose it's the salt that can make chips unhealthy too, but if you exercise alot you can just sweat out excess sweat
Legumes, Milk, Brown Rice, Mustard has no fat or very little and is healthier than Mayonaise, Dipping vegetables in Salsa rather than dressing cuts out on fat. Steaming vegetables in juice intead of water adds vitamin c. Egg yolks though containing cholesterol have good vitamins in them plus Omega fatty 3's. Salmon for more of the Omega Fatty acids. Not to mention Flax seeds. Raw almonds normalize cholesterol levels;leave the husks on and can take the place of meat because they are a good source of protein. Dark Green leaf lettuce instead of iceberg is healthier.

Whenever I have chips I choose Baked lays instead of regular lays and not as fattening.
French Fries that are baked instead of deep fried are healthier. You can also control the salt amount.
