What's your opinion on swearing? Are you happy to swear in front of people?

There was a thread a few years ago on this those that posted on that has your opinion changed at all?

Can't say that my opinion has changed that much.

Once in my life I used a lot of swear words. Depending on the company. It wasn't something I was really aware of. How bad it could be. I knew I more or less stopped using them while talking with certain people or in certain situations. But when a friend, that was no stranger to cursing, told me he didn't like to talk to me on the bus since every other word I used was to use swear words. So I decided to stop. Took me a good while, months before seeing any real improvement but I managed. Since I often talk straight out without thinking it wasn't like I could stop myself before swearing so I punished myself by digging my nails into my hand and twist as hard as I could. Trust me, if you do it right it hurts a lot. I got a bit worried the times I started to bleed though.

I wouldn't say that I never swear. It happens but it's very rare. Not like it happens once a week or anything.

Can I be offended by swearing? Oh yes. But it depends on who says it, why, where and what kind of situation. So it's not like I'm offended everytime I hear a swear word. I think it can depend on my mood as well. Sometimes I probably don't even think about it when I hear it but when I do sometimes it's easier to ignore and sometimes it gets me.

I can see situations when a swear word adds something to what's being said but honestly most of the times I just think it sounds bad. I'm glad that I managed to stop when I did. I'd be very ashamed if I still talked the same way with friends.

But there's so many ways to say things with or without swear words that I'd have a problem with so I wouldn't single out cursing to be the main problem.

I need to add that how you grew up and living your life is a huge influence. My parents didn't swear much so swearing wasn't something we used in normal conversations. I'm very well aware (at least now) that it make me more "sensitive"/negative towards the use of them. For others adding the f word of the likes in every other sentence is perfectly and so they don't see what the big deal is and understandably so. In the end it comes down to if we can accept the differences or if we feel the need to say that others are wrong for feeling the way they do.

I live in the swear word capital of the world, NYC. I grew up around expletives so it's pretty much a part of my vocabulary. 😛

I don't swear a whole lot now that I am a little older but I do use expletives.....except in front of my mom or my wife. Oh, and kids.

I am not easily offended at all when others use them either, just don't do it in front of kids, that's a big issue with me.

Which I kind of like. It doesn't mean much to most people so they don't react to it as when you use swear words. Many people do use swear words to get a reaction or put emphasis on things. Using a word people don't know doesn't give that. If you use swear words in your everyday conversation just out of habit there isn't a difference to yourself, maybe just to the ones hearing it.

I swear all the time 😛 (although I can control myself with people I'm not supposed to swear in front of) The truth, I really enjoy it , even if it's not done on purpose, and as long as it's not too rude or dirty it makes your speech peppier. The best is to associate it with a good language register 🙂

My opinion is the exact same as it was 2 years ago 🙂

Like almost everything in life it depends on the situation. I have no problem with doing a poo when I need to but I wouldn't do so in front of a client while I'm consulting at work!

I swear all the time but I have it under control. I swear when I'm angry, sad, happy, joking, laughing. All the time. Funny thing is when other people say certain words I still react to them, even though I use them myself all the time.

I swear all the time. I try to behave myself in front of strangers or my parents, but apart from that, I'm constantly cursing. Even if nothing that bad happens. But I don't care. And why should I? 😀 In my opinion, it's just words. Nothing more, nothing less.

I used to swear all the time. Of course, it was because of the environment I was raised in (especially my friends growing up, and my mom. Which is funny, because no matter how much my mom curses, to this day I never curse around her. It still feels weird. 😛 But the past couple of months, I've started to change. I started to realize that people who swear in every other sentence annoy the hell out of me, and it really makes me wonder do they have any other words in their vocabulary. There's nothing wrong with it really, but IMO moderation is the key. So I'm trying to cut down alot. It's a struggle, I tell you. But I made a system, like every time I realize that I cursed, I pinch or smack myself. Or I tell a friend, "if you hear me curse, smack the hell out me."

It definitely works, only sometimes my friends take the smacking part a little too seriously......haha. 😉

Yeah, the key to swearing is using it to emphasis something, not as an every other word.
I have no problem using swear words, but most of my friends are more mild-mannered, so I use words like "scuzzbucket" and "crudhead" as insults instead. I have also been knOwn to use the word "shoes" in the place of a similar-sounding expletive.

I swear a lot when I'm angry. And use it as comedy relief at other times. I know when not to swear as well though. I don't get easily offended anyway so a few swear words aren't going to do it. I think with everything there's a time and a place.

Anyone following me on Twitter or LJ knows that I curse freely and enthusiastically. As other people have mentioned, if I am at work or in a situation where cursing is inappropriate, I obviously don't curse. Other than that? Well it's just part of my speech pattern. And honestly sometimes to achieve full effect, you need to curse. My father, who swears like a sailor, continuously tells me that "it sounds awful to hear a girl cursing", but if he can do it freely, so can I. Plus, sometimes it's just fun.

Plus, there's the whole Irish thing. ;)
I do swear, but not at people. Swearing shouldn't be used in an aggressive or intimidating manner. Other than that, I don't care if other people swear. 🙂

And of course it matters who your swearing in front of.

I still have the same cursing patterns as I did two years ago... I curse a lot around my friends, and still a lot around my family, barring certain words (I don't use the F word around my family). I also try to censor myself a lot when kids are around, 'cause let's face it; most people don't want their kids knowing curse words. LOL

I thought of you when I read this post. I think you may have had to edit a post or two of mine! haha :D
I swear quite a lot to be honest, terrible i know, but i find myself doing it when i don't even realise it. I do swear in front of people, except my parents because they get really annoyed at me when i do, but i try not to swear AT people though it can be hard when someone is throwing swearwords at you, then i make an exception. Mainly i swear when im playing a game and i die a lot. lol

I guess that you could call me a Jekyll and Hyde swearer. I never swore until I was 21, when I left home and went into the Navy, where profanity wasn't as much a question of expletives as it was simple nomenclature. (For example, a waste basket or garbage can was ALWAYS referred to as a "s**t can, and things got more descriptive from there) It was like moving to a foreign country and having to learn the native language. In my civilian work place, it wasn't quite that bad, but profanity was still very prevalent unless there were women present.

At home, with my family, or with my friends, just about the strongest thing that I ever say is "dang" or "heck."

Considering I'm a Scot and from Glasgow (the biggest and roughest city in Scotland), swearing has always been a part of my life. It doesn't seem like a taboo here as it does in other countries.
