Question Symbolism in Bad Eggs?

Okay, so every time I watch this episode I get the nagging feeling I'm missing something. Joss and Co. never do anything without purpose, so I thought someone could help me figure this one out.

When Angel & Buffy are talking about the future in the cemetery, they start to kiss after "all I want is you..." and all that fluffy mushy Bangel stuff (love them, but that scene sort of makes me want to ralph), and then the camera pans to the grave stone they're near. It reads "In Loving Memory." That HAS to be on purpose. I don't know if it's foreshadowing the Angel/Angelus thing or in specific that Buffy has to kill him to save the world... I dunno. Thoughts, comments, ideas?

I agree. I have always seen that shot as a warning shot to the audience. I think it works rather well. This version of B/A dies in this ep; innocent and carefree enough that they are making plans of the their future together. We never see them like that again, that version of B/A is officially killed off in Surprise/Innocence.

B/A continues after these eps of course, however it is a much different relationship than it had been.

Yea, I remember watching this episode and seeing the "In loving memory" and thinking, "OH DANG something's gonna happen to Bangel." I don't think it was just a coincidence.

You know, I had never noticed that before you posted this here. But I read Kean's post ^^ and I really think she raises an interesting point in that it was probably foreshadowing what was about to happen.

20/20 hindsight is interesting. When I know what happens I can see the clues in the episodes leading up to Surprise clues I didn't catch the first time. I might go all the way to Surprise and I might not. I'll decide when I get there. lol 🙂

I always used to think that it was meant to highlight the fact that Buffy and Angel are making out in a graveyard, to add to the spookiness factor. It's this sweet, innocent relationship surrounded by death.

However, now I think Kean is right, as usual.

I'm watching this episode as I type, with my aunt and cousin as I type and I just totally laughed out loud when the teacher started to talking about the consequences of having sex too young, considering what happens just one episode later. Compared to Angelus, pregnancy looks kinda good huh?

Now that I think about it (I don't know if that's what you meant), the sex talk IS a warning about Buffy having sex with Angel at young age then he turns evil.

I'm a huge believer in all of the symbolism, but I'm not sure all of that is meant to be something. Like the sign in "Doublemeat Palace, when Buffy and Spike go at it in the ally and the sign says: "Team work". Till today I'm not sure if it means somehting.

That's never really registered with me, but thinking about it, I think it is on purpose 🙂

I definitely think the tombstone was intended. Filmmakers have purpose for everything in each shot; they all serve the scene/shot. Also, because this is Joss, I especially believe the tombstone was there to foreshadow something. What it is for, I am not completely sure, but it is likely one of the theories posted above.

Couldn't have said it better. Seriously, you stole the words from my head and said them better than I could have. Creepy, but cool.

If you really think about it, the show in general shifts away from the carefree/innocent side. Even when Angel returns that blissful ignorance they have in the graveyard is lost forever. It's a metaphor - an amazing one -for B/A's relationship, both respective characters, and the show itself to completely transform. The differences between the episodes before Innocence and after (to me anyway) are huge.
