Symbolism of the sacrifice

I always assumed it was premeditated to select a woman for sacrifice that resembled Connor's mother. In essence it was Connor terminating his innocence when he killed the woman; severing the ties to his humanity if you will. That's why the Powers That Be posed as Darla to try to sway him back to their side.

Do you think if the human hadn't resembled Darla so much that A- Connor would have been as wrecked by his actions, or B- the Powers That Be would have still came to him in the guise of his mother?

Connor never met Darla so I doubt physical resemblance was the issue. I think anyone would be wrecked by cold-blooded murder of someone innocent. You don't come back from that and the only possible redemption arc would be for him to give up his own life to magically reanimate the girl he murdered and even that would not redeem him from the terror he caused. This was purely a test of obedience to evil (and anything that demands blind obedience to irrational instructions is always evil).

Joss prefers a specific type of actress: short, preferably blonde, slim. The chances of Darla and the dead girl looking similar are enhanced by this.

For what it's worth (I don't know if and how much this may have subconsciously affected the writers or choice of actress), the satanic panics were rife with rumors of blonde, blue-eyed virgins (female) to be sacrificed on Halloween or Friday the 13th or similar day. This rumor panic kept popping up over and over, seemingly unrelated and before the internet was a thing, even in small towns. Heck, a counselor thought I was looking for someone to take my place lest my cult (that she was sure I was a member of) would kill me instead (it's amazing that plenty of schools in the USA will hire nutcases like that). I read an explanation of this by Jeffrey Victor (a sociologist that studied this intensely) but I only vaguely recall that the blue-eyed blond virgin was a symbol of purity.

I wasn't able to find out more on the net, but I did find this page which described it a bit more, and also how goths and such could be beaten by vigilantes believing the rumor (which reminds me of Gingerbread, which those events may have helped to inspire the writing of):

The point being that it's a symbol that goes deep down in the human (at least among white people) psyche and very likely influenced the choice of virgin sacrifice for the story...and because of how common the rumor was, may have even been a conscious choice (not necessarily to imitate the rumor, it's just what one automatically thinks).

Oh I definitely think it was deliberate. It's not just a facial resemblance; their hairstyle and style and colour of outfit are nigh identical

Even, for instance, in that picture "Darlas" hands look like they are bound as well. Just never thought before that if the sacrifice looked like someone else if PTB would actually bother showing up as Darla or not.
