I always assumed it was premeditated to select a woman for sacrifice that resembled Connor's mother. In essence it was Connor terminating his innocence when he killed the woman; severing the ties to his humanity if you will. That's why the Powers That Be posed as Darla to try to sway him back to their side.
Do you think if the human hadn't resembled Darla so much that A- Connor would have been as wrecked by his actions, or B- the Powers That Be would have still came to him in the guise of his mother?
