Tabula Rasa: Goodbye To You

So I saw this mentioned elsewhere on the internet, people were debated who the song "Goodbye To You" playing at the end of Tabula Rasa was for. Obviously it's very fitting for just about everything happening at the end of the episode, but who do you think it applies to the most. Spike and Buffy, Giles and Buffy, or Tara and Willow. Here are the lyrics:

You're right; it does apply to all 3, however I always saw it more fitting with Willow and Tara. Then secondly I would Buffy and Spike. But more so Buffy herself. Basically fare welling who she used to be. It's a great song choice.

I would go with Tara and Willow, who cares about Spike and Buffy at this point, such a potent love song is just not applicable to them

I definitely always feel like it's more for Willow and Tara. I love the song, and it's a very fitting choice (and I LOVE Michelle Branch, yay!), but for me I always felt it was more the theme of Willow's and Tara's story arc.

I know when I watched it on TV, I only remember thinking of it applying to Willow and Tara. Like if you'd asked what scene this this song play over, I'd have said the scene were Tara leaves Willow.

My first impression is that it's about Giles' leaving. We don't know when he will come back. And his leaving on top of everything else she's going through is what helps Buffy her toward Spike. Although of course it applies to Tara & Willow too.

I think it applies to Tara most of all. It was hard for her to break up with Willow, and she kept thinking that Willow could change, but she couldn't, and I imagine that was hard on Tara. She felt abused and betrayed when Willow used the spell on her, and disappointed when Willow wouldn't stop using magic.

As much as I love the last scene in this episode (and this episode in general) I actually don't think it applies to Spuffy at this point (maybe later).

I think if were relating it to Spuffy it manly applies to Buffy saying goodbye to who she was, half of it seems to be directed at Giles, the other haft at the person she was, and giving in to the temptation of Spike. Before I heard that theory I had actually never thought about it, always thought it was for Tara and Willow, but I think it sort of makes sense.

It always resounded most to Buffy for me. Giles had been her Watcher and father-figure for five or six years and now he is leaving. Her world has been rocked majorly in the last few months, and now the one person who has always been a constant will be gone.

I wonder if they had to pay big bucks for Michelle Branch's appearance in this episode. She was one of the more recognized musical artists that appeared on the series.

I have always thought of the song as being about/to Willow/Tara. Their breakup was the one that touched me the most. I always figured Giles would come back in a few episodes, that he wasn't really gone. Tara though, that felt like a real sort of breakup (and of course ended up being that, even if they got another happy moment (or whole night) together). I also connected this song with Tara and Giles singing "Wish I Could Stay" in OMWF.

I never thought of this either. But it definitely makes sense to me that it is about Buffy, trying to hold on to who she was/thinks she should be. And letting go/saying goodbye.
