After re-watching Tabula Rasa, I started getting this theory. I don't know whether or not it was the intention of the writers, but I believe it is.

I don't think their memories were just wiped, they were just pushed to the back of their minds. Prove of this can be found with Willow and Tara still being attracted to one another, and Anya still being afraid of bunnies.

Spike after finding out he was a vampire, came to the conclusion that he was a vampire with a soul, on a mission of redemption, that he helps the helpless, ect. Sound familiar? Spike obviously remembered this sub-conciously. He was trying to make himself into Angel. He''s jealous of Angel because he knows Buffy will always love him.

Buffy, not knowing what her name was, called herself Joan. It's a boring average name. She told Dawn she liked being Joan. She wanted to be Joan because she wants to be normal and boring like that name.

Xander and Anya both thought they were in love with other people, Xander with Willow and Anya with Giles. This is prove of their fear that they aren't suppossed to be together and that they want to be with other people.

Again, this all could of been unintentional on the writers parts, but I thought it was neat.

*Makes a sweeping bow towards Billy_Blood*

You are a genius. I salute your theories. I especially was fond of the thought that Spike would unconciously try to become Angel.

Billy_Blood, I got your back.

Well that's a good theory, I kind a suspected the Spike trying to be like Angel part too but you really analized the whole picture...
humm...interesting.

Very good deep look into Tabula Rasa and I think you covered it!!!

Actually, I thought Joan was a reference to Joan of Arc, another militant woman out of history.

OOOOOO this is so interesting. I never really noticed any of that before. Also buffy and dawn think they are sisters.

Did you noticed spike was wearing the same suite he wore in restless when he is on the swings. Also in that scene him ang giles are like father and son. I thought that was really cool so I thought I'd share.

I wasn't surprised that Giles and Spike thought they were related. After all they do have a lot in common. I just rewatched "The Gift" last week and Giles made a crack about the St. Crispin's Day speech from (I think) Henry V . He then started a quote, and Spike finished it (with a twist). They are both very well read since they both regularly quote from Shakespeare and other classics. The accent is a gimme. Both are very intelligent and resourceful. It's not too large a stretch to imagine them to be related.

And if you notice, Spike during his life is a lot like Giles during S1-3, while Spike while he was evil was a lot like Giles when he was Ripper.

Yeah, and that explains why Giles has such a teeth-on-tinfoil relationship with Spike, despite the fact that he's an evil, soulless vamp for most of the eps he appear in.

good theory and points... thats some good insight...

always,
kim

I recently watched the "Restless" commentary, and Joss said that it was intentionally the same suit that Spike wore in that scene. And also, Spike is trying as hard as (demonly?) possible to redeem himself to Buffy at this point. And it's clear that Giles is a father figure to Buffy. So, if the memories have been pushed back, he's got some natural attraction to people that she is close to.

That's a good theory. Al of it seems very true. However, the Willow attracted to Tara thing may just because the writers wanted to make it seem like the two were MEANT to be together, so they liked each other even when they didn't really know each other. But the rest of your theory could be very true. I like youe analyses on things. You have very good insight.

Those were good theories, I got both of your backs.

Something I noticed,
At the end, people were depressed and reflecting what they did/didn't/regretted doing, a lot like the end of Lover's Walk (3.8), except for Spike, who is of course, happy as a kid in a candy shop.
