This is, apparently, supposed to be a prequel to the movies. He's a former Green Beret who's recruited by the CIA, so he must have at least some of his skills already, just to draw attention to himself.
 
The films are bad enough. In the right hands who knows. But this does have bland genratic action show written all over it. At least the films had Neeson.

It wouldn't be the first time that a TV series actually turns out to be better than the movies that they were based on, or, at least, the SEQUELS to the original movies. The "Terminator" TV series was better than anything after T2 and Duncan Macleod was a better Highlander on TV that Conner ever was after the original movie.
 
Friday Night Lights and Teen Wolf were better than the movie from which they were based, as well.
Fargo, The Exorcist, From Dusk Till Dawn, Hannibal, Limitless, Wet Hot American Summer FDoC, Buffy- were all at least as good as the movie from which they were based.
 
The first film was great and the second was dreadful. We did get Buffy out of a pretty lacklustre movie though so the series might turn out OK.
