Tara was supposed to return

I've said it before in another thread, but I'm actually glad it worked out so that Tara didn't come back. Not because I have anything against the character, but Buffy's storyline in S6 was all about her chronic depression in coping with being dragged back to life against her will by people she trusted. Since there is no indication that Tara would go anywhere other than a heavenly dimension (she died a natural death, she was, let's face it, one of the nicest people on either series). The idea of Buffy herself doing the same thing back to one of her friends a year or so down the line just doesn't sit right with me. I mean, I know the writing in S7 was pretty inconsistent, so maybe it would have fitted in anyway in that sense 😛 But given that Joss and the writers went with that story for Buffy in S6, they should have at least kept consistency with it.

Tara's death was horrible for Willow, and heartbreaking. But Tara (if we go by what happened to Buffy) was at rest now, and by the last half of series 7, whilst Willow misses Tara, and loved Tara, she is learning how to live without her and moving on with her life.

Saying that, whilst I liked Tara well enough, she was never one of my favourite characters, I would likely feel different if it were one of my favourite characters and there was a chance that they could have returned.

I completely agree. The way I see it, I think, or at least I'm hoping that Joss and Co wouldn't have been dumb enough to include this huge raging plot hole about the ripping out of heaven post-depression thing. But because I have faith in the team, I'm fairly sure they would have found a way around that. The easiest one really just being that Buffy gets to ask Tara whether she wants to come back on Earth or not, and Tara takes the decision to do so on her own.

Or they could have taken Tara from just before she was shot and placed her in the present? That way she'd never have actually been to heaven in the first place.
 
That sounds like it could be fraught with difficulties... because then, is "their Tara" still technically dead and in a heavenly dimension, whilst an "alternate Tara", if you will, is brought into their time/ dimension, having never been dead? I guess that could have been interesting in seeing how she coped with being pulled out of time, and all the changes that had taken place, though if it occurred late in the season, there might not really be enough time to make very much of it. But if they literally pulled their Tara out of time, meaning she was never shot/ never died, then surely that would have drastic influences on their present time? Did Willow still go dark? Is Warren still alive? Is Willow still attempting to suppress her powers and not use them, as she was at the point in S6 before Tara's death? In which case, how does that alter the final battle? Again, the potential to be interesting, possibly even game changing, but there would have needed to be a hefty amount of story dedicated to it.

I don't know, I just think it would have taken damn convincing writing to make it believable that Buffy would even consider bringing someone back from the dead as a valid option AT ALL after S6, never mind getting to the nitty-gritty of how to bring her back. And I wouldn't describe the S7 writing as convincing.

Knowing Joss, I can easily imagine him bringing back Tara in, say, ep. 20 or 21 and then killing off both Tara and Willow in the finale.

Initially Joss planned to kill off Tara and Willow in season 5 finale. Actually, he planned to kill off practically everybody in season 5 finale, when he thought that season 5 would be the last one. He wanted to kill off Xander in 7.18 Dirty Girls but changed his mind at the very last moment. Joss isn't about happy endings. He has a tragic worldview, his characters suffer, and suffer, and then suffer again.

So I don't think Willow and Tara could get a happy ending, even if Joss would've brought her back for a while.

Do you have any interviews or sources for that?! This is something that I've never heard before so I'm a bit curious 😛

Also, I remember Joss said (I think it might have been in The Killer In Me commentary, but might have been another episode or interview) that he wanted Willow to be the one ending the series happy and in a relationship. So I think if he would have brought back Tara, it was something pretty legit, he wanted to give the fans at least one happy ending.

I know eh! Definitely would have been a very morbid episode. I think it's good that it didn't happen though, imagine the uproar it would have caused.
 
I remember reading (years ago) that the Tara death was to happen in TOUGH LOVE, leading to Willow seeking revenge on Glory but somehow ended up joining her instead, which led to a few episodes of Dark Willow instead of the episodes SPIRAL and WEIGHT OF THE WORLD, and her bleeding Dawn in the finale. Of course once it was confirmed there would be a season 6 this would change and be adapted for the next two years. I had no idea about the rest though, Xander dying? Willow and Dawn dying? I'm so grateful to UPN!

I've heard that as well. I think those ideas came fairly early on in the season, when the writers were probably trying to get everything ironed out.
