I watched the episode where we get to see Tara's family and it was good except for the part when Spike explains why Tara thought she was a demon.

The whole "trying to keep the females in line" philosophy sounds almost like why there's just one slayer (or there should be just one slayer).

They could have thought up some other reason--like skipping a generation or something else.
Anyway, that's how the newcomer sees it.

I like the reason they gave. It was sad to see that Tara, who's such a sweet person, came from such a horrible, oppressive, sexist family!

i found it more interesting that after knowing what the family was, her cousin was ok to go right back to it and claim tara was the bad one for getting away!

I don't understand how you can be suggesting this
Spike: There's no demon in there. It's just a family legend, am I right? Just a bit of spin to keep the ladies in line? You're a piece of work. I like you.
is anything like the Slayer 'philosophy'.

The Slayer is chosen, she has gifts to fight the forces of evil

The MaClay women are forced to believe that they will turn into a Demon on their birthday so as to live a life of servitude to the male members of the family.
When i first watched the episode, it was my first time seeing it, and there never came amoment that i thought....ohhh yeah, she's like a Slayer.

Could you please go into more detail of this assumption you have made, as i am fascinated by it, as i have never read anyone else connect those two speeches together.

taras family is evil !!!! making her think she was a demmon.....then maybe she wouldnt have been so shy? if her family treat her prop!!!

"full and manly beared your going to break something trying" xander...

Hm, Chasing Cordy, I don't really understand what you're trying to say about the slayer thing/Tara's family thing...

i found it more interesting that after knowing what the family was, her cousin was ok to go right back to it and claim tara was the bad one for getting away!
Heh, I actually love this, lol. Ok I'm weird, but that cousin Beth girl just doesn't make any sense at all, lol...

Sorry for holding this up...

I was told by other fans of BtVS that the reason there was only one slayer was to keep "one girl" in line rather than have a bunch of powerful women running around. More of a control issue than anything else.
Tara's family sounded the same--keep the ladies in check by telling them something or holding them back for some reason just to be in control of them.

think her dad was afriad of her independece and power ( magic) who knows what they did to her mouther ( witch too) taras family evil !!!

Tara's Family were all bitcas... can u blame tara for being shy after having to live with that kind of father and brother...i am glad that they didn't know about willow being tara's girlfriend i don't think they desrve to be in taras life at all...that's just what i think...( a bunch of sexiests-maclay men)

Loved the dance scene at the end of the episode!!!!

I thought it was bad that they her family told the woman theywere demons, she seemed so afraid that side of her would show, and it was never there.
I think it's shocking what they did, and i would not forgive my family for that, i just can't beilive the cousin stayed with them.

I like the reason they gave. It's sad to know that Tara had come from a family like that. It's no wonder she probably wanted to get out of there and why she was so shy and quite before she met Willow.

I think her family wasn't right to tell her those things because her mother had demon or something in her (not seen this ep in a while so not sure if that's correct). And to have Tara go on believing that she could be bad too was wrong.

But I liked the reasoning that Spike gave. Generation didn't have anything to do with it. Her family was willing to do pretty much anything to keep their family together, even if that meant possibly lying to them about what they are.

Her mother didnt have demon in her. it was just a story to keep the girls in line.

I thought that the whole storyline of the reasons behind Tara believing herself to be a demon was a fantastic change from the norm, much more interesting than yet another mystical explaination or deep dark family secret of demonic heritage.

On a show like Buffy you always expect some elaborate reason and mystical answer so it was both strange and interesting to just have a story about a family who lied to their women, telling them they were demonic, in order to keep them cooking the meals and dusting the house.

Great break from what we expect from BtVS.

gotta agree with The Watcher...when i first saw this ep i was like, 'Oh God, how can Tara be a demon? she's so sweet!'
but flipping the storyline on it's head and it turning out that it was all a big con to get the females of the family to live in servitude to the men was just a wonderful change, and i loved it.
'Family' is one of my favorite eps, def in my top 10, but not once did i compare Tara's situation to the slayer line.
i'm interested to know where you heard this, Chasing Cordy. i just don't understand how anyone can see the slayer line as a control thng.
someone point it out if i'm missing something, please?

i agree! they really pissed me off. i was so happy when buffy stood up for tara at the end despite tara having done the spell & all. i also loved the dance scene at the end, best part of the whole ep!

i wasnt happy with xander and buffy ( when they were in the magic shop) talking about ...oh ...having to go to taras birthday......but all was forgiven when they all stood up for tara 🙂 go guys 🙂

i don't think they thought about it like that...'oh God, we have to go to Tara's birthday party, drag' i think they wrere more worried about the kind of people who were going to be there. they still weren't entirly comfortable with the fact that Tara was gay, and this is what the subtext of the conversation was about. Buffy and Xander weren't sure how they were going to react, or what to expect.

oh right....never thought of it like that, but tara doesnt give off extreme gayness vibe...but its xander and buffys first experince with a gay friend...coz they have both know willow ( oz) taras there first window to homosexuality and they didnt know what to expect. 🙂
