Taras Mum - comment in the body

I am just watching the body episode, Tara is sitting with Buffy and tells her she understands what she is going through as she lost her mum when she was 17 buffy turns to her and says "oh I didnt know"

But didnt they know in the episode Family when Taras family shows up and states that Tara will turn demon as her mother did when she was her age!

I cant remember if they actually mention her mother had past away! If they did Buffy is obviousley very forgetful!

"her age" to me isnt specific.. its just the late teens almost an adult ish time... erm time to me

not like an exact date
 
I don't think Tara ever explicitly told anyone that her mother died before The Body (even though she probably did tell Willow offscreen at some point.)
 
All Tara's family had said was that her mother had turned into a demon.
They didn't say she was dead. Buffy probably assumed that she was in some sort of rehab, or locked up like Oz had been once a month for others' safety, or that she'd abandoned the family because of her demony ways...all things she wasn't likely to bring up with Tara, because that conversation would have been uncomfortable.
 
yeah they never mentioned it, but let me pose another question. do you think that perhaps tara's family killed her mother because they thought she was going to turn into a demon? It could explain why Tara was almost frightened to leave with her family in S5's Family. That's what I think. When Tara mentions it to Buffy she doesn't seem real choked up about it even though it had only happed 3 years prior. just an idea.

3 years is a long time for a 17 year old. I felt Tara's demeanor was spot on in that scene.
 
From the way they talked about it, I thought Tara's mom had cancer or somesuch; she says it wasn't sudden (qualifying it with, "It's always sudden"), so I don't think murder was part of the equation.

You could take that to mean many things, though.
Perhaps Tara's family had been beating, tormenting, and generally making her mother's life miserable. Maybe she knew all along that her father was going to end up killing her mother. Maybe that's what she meant by "it wasn't sudden."

I always thought Tara's father or brother or other relative had killed her mom...but maybe not cold-blooded murder. Maybe it was an accident while trying to "protect" (read: oppress) her.
 
I never really thought that it might have been her family but it seems kind of weird that Tara would still talk to them. I know she does seem very intimidated by them... but still. Anyway, it's a possibility but I also thought that it was cancer or something like that. And also, Tara's mom was killed when Tara was like 17 so technicly, Tara's mom was quite old and I think that if they would have murdered her it would have been closer to her 20 because that's when they are suppose to turn into demons

^ Tara doesn't talk to them.
She left, she didn't tell them where she was, she didn't even call them when her birthday was coming up. I never got the impression that Tara stayed in contact with them more than she had to, when she was legally bound to live there.
And sure, it might have been something like cancer...we'll never really know...but the longer the abuse went on, the less "sudden" a murder would seem, logically.
I guess I always felt like her family was pigheaded and cruel enough to kill. And since we weren't ever given a real explanation (disease, car accident, what have you) I always thought the family was at least partially responsible.
 
Well I see Tara's leaving as a result of their not accepting her as a wiccan. I mean a lie was orchastrated in order for them to prevent family members from getting into the magics.

Either Tara's Dad's side of the family are totally anti-magic people. Or Magic was to blame for Tara's mums death, and therefore their terrified of the same happening to another member. Judging by the look of betrayal on the family's faces it seems likely.

Then again I'm not sure Tara would want to get into Magic if her Mum died of it. Unless she loved her Mum so much she wanted to follow in her steps. That's my interpretation.
