We know about Angel's tattoo, but do we ever find out how he got it? I mean, I don't know too much about tattoo's, but is that something you could have gotten back in the 1700's or 1800's? Anyone have any thoughts or ideas?

There's a lot of fanwank about it being something he was given so that people would recognize him as Angelus, but it was never established in the show how he got it, no.

Does being a vampire mean you're physically incapable of getting a tattoo? I don't think that's ever been discussed. He would have had to, because his name is Liam, so he wouldn't have had an A tattoo when he was human... at least that's my thinking.

It should, but obviously it isn't... but there are a few inconsistencies when it comes to vampiric healing (Drusilla threatening to "blow out the candles" of the bookworm vampire in "Surprise", for example), so I guess there are exceptions. Maybe some severe injuries do leave scars, maybe the skin healed but preserved the ink, maybe he did a spell... it was never explained in canon.

I believe I noticed Angel has a new tattoo on his wrist in Angel season 5. They never talk about it or anything, but i'm sure I saw it a few times, so I think Vampires can get tattoos just fine.

That's David's real tattoo, his wife has a matching one, so nothing to do with the character, just the show not hiding it well.
