Firing the poor teacher sounds a lot like overreacting although I don't think he was right to just be that blunt with them. 😛 I'm actually a bit surprised I think that way because usually I'd be against people believing in fictional stuff just for comfort!

Thats part of the problem that this world faces though, luvmuffin; if everyone say 'that's not my place, if their parents want to do this or that to them, thats not my place to make sure the child learns correctly or is properly supervised'

But we're not talking about 12-18 year old teenagers here, who are much more capable of understanding and making up their own minds. A 7 year old is a very different story. A teacher just shouldn't say to a 7 year old child that their parents are lying to them, and have been for as long as they can remember. Like it or not, Santa is a societal norm, just like the Tooth Fairy and the Easter Bunny. (Not that I ever believed in the Easter Bunny, cause that one's just stupid.) Parents continue to support the myth because it gives a child a magical Christmas. What gives the teacher the right to spoil that?

Now, again, I'm not saying the teacher should be sacked. I'm not saying that they should even really be punished. I just think that they shouldn't, in a professional capacity, tell children of that age that Santa isn't real. What is there possibly to gain?

I would never guessed that, but my experience with kids are a bit limited...

My neice will be ten years old next week and she still believes in Santa. Quite frankly I love that she still believes, she should get as many years out of Christmas when it truly is magical as she can. She has her whole life to be a grown up, she doesn't need to know yet. It will probably be her last year so we should savour that with her.

7 is far to young, a child that age is little more than a baby. I don't the teacher should have been sacked but those kids lost a little bit of their childhood through his mistake, they could have went a few more years totally oblivious and happier for it.

I actually had doubts at ten and then i got told by my sister that Santa wasn't real when i was around 11 just on the edge of twelve because i was determined to keep believing until someone i trusted actually told me. I was devastated I remember crying for two days solid. I stopped getting all christmassy for 2 years after that but now I guess I'm over it although i do miss the innocence of leaving out mice pies and milk for Santa. 🙂 So of course i think This teacher just blurting it out whether it was an accident or not is pretty harsh on the kids. Stupid Teachers!

I know I was definately around 7, maybe 6 when my older cousin and I got in a fight and she decided telling me that there was no Santa was the best way to make me cry. I just find it a little hard to believe that in this day and age, when 12 and 13 year olds are already having sex, most 7-8 year olds in the third grade wouldn't have heard the sad truth about Santa Claus from any given one of their friends. I'm thinking most of the kids in that class already knew, or maybe I'm far too cynical... it just doesn't seem realistic to me. And as far as the teacher losing her job, I guess it depends on the context under which the told the kids... if it was just an innocent mistake then no, but if it was with malice...

I only read the first post but I love this.

I would love nothing more than 30 wide eyed 6 year olds looking at me and then say the following 'Santa, ohh he died in a freak Reindeer accident. Rudolph had too many shots of Jack Daniels and careered head first into a Bunny Hospital, killing all the bunnies, the reindeer and Santa. No presents this year then.'

The look on their faces would be a picture. Imagine that, the moment just before they all cry as next years Christmas Card🙂
