Teacher's Pet

Aired: March 25, 1997
Writer: David Greenwalt
Director: Bruce Seth Green

Trivia:

- During the dream sequence at the beginning of this episode we see Xander playing a guitar, the significance being that this happens to be a "Warlock" model guitar made by B.C. Rich guitars.

- The praying mantis puppet is actually a re-use of the Na'Grath prop from the first season of Babylon 5, which used the same make-up company.

- In this episode, we find out that Xander's middle name is LaVelle.

- We also learn that Willow's last name is Rosenberg.

Bloopers:

- Buffy finds the science teachers glasses on the floor, and she puts them on the table. In one shot she places them with the legs folded out, and then in the close-up, the legs are folded in.

- When Cordelia opens the refrigerator in the cafeteria and sees the teacher, she screams "His head! Where's his head?" however, when they show her face right before she finishes speaking, her mouth isn't moving.

- During class, Doctor Gregory is giving a lecture about ants, but behind him he projects an image of a beetle onto the wall.

- Where does a substitute teacher come up with the familiarity and authority to even suggest afterschool science fair activities, especially on their first day?

- Buffy says they don't have time to bang on doors in Miss French's neighborhood, but she thinks there's enough time to track down and subdue a vicious and recalcitrant vampire in Sunnydale's seemingly vast underground tunnel system, and then persuade the vampire to lead them to Miss French?

References:

- "We're talking full-on Exorcist twist." In The Exorcist, William Friedkin's classic 1973 film based on William Peter Blatty's novel, a 12-year-old girl (played by Linda Blair) is possessed by a demon that causes her body to engage in numerous unnatural acts, including projectile vomiting and rotating her head 180°.

Soundtrack:

- "Already Met You" - Superfine

- "Stoner Love" - Superfine

Best quotes:

- Cordelia: "Oh, I'm not saying that we should kill a teacher every day just so I can lose weight. I'm just saying, when tragedy strikes we have to look on the bright side, y'know? Like how even used Mercedes still have leather seats."

- Buffy: "What happened?"
Angel: "I didn't pay attention."
Buffy: "To somebody with a big fork?"
Angel: "He's coming."
Buffy: "The Fork Guy?"

- Xander: "It's funny how the Earth never opens up and swallows you when you want it to."

Yeah! I finally found the right place to discuss the episodes as I re-watch them again. I have issues sometimes 🙂

Basically for those that haven't heard from me yet, I'm rewatching all the seasons again. I haven't done that in order for a long time. So, it's like the first time, but without commercials and being forced to wait every week. (That used to be so hard. How did we do it?)

Points of interest: 1. Buffy truly has the WORST luck ever. The only teacher that likes her gets eaten by a preying mantis woman. I mean, really?
2. Cricket sandwich, yuck! I still don't look at mayo the same.

Favorite scene: Giles plays the wrong side of the tape.
Great quote: "Call me old fashioned. I don't want anymore suprises in my hot dogs." -Willow

Ok guys, watch ya'll thinking?

One, he was tough for Angel but Buffy could easily fight him. She had him tied up and was using him as a guidedog, not so much with the asking him for help. Two, she took a chance that he would be in the same location that he had been around the previous two nights. Three, she was using the tunnels as a shortcut to the park and not searching for him there.

That Willow line makes me want to think of a lesbian joke. Same thing with Dopplegangland when she is staring at the banana. Immature, I know. ha ha

I remember being surprised that the Principal showed her transcripts to all of the teachers. But it makes sense now. On paper she seemed like the worse kind of JD. Stint in the psych ward. Arson charges. Kicked out of her last school with no other school in the LA district willing to take her. In lots of fights. Consorts with the local street gangs. Possibly into drugs (I bet Hemery was on the "gangs on PCP" denial too to explain vamps).

I felt sorry for those crickets! Poor little things.

Crazysoulless, I noticed some of those inconsistencies, for a lack of better word, too. I laugh now, because I love the show so much. I think the writers got so much better as the years went on.

Actually, I was disagreeing with a complaint that PrincessBuffy had. There definitely were some screw ups on the series though. I try to fanwank them so they make sense. For instance, in All the way Buffy says "I was only gone three months" but she was gone FIVE MONTHS since she died in May and was brought the first week of October and Spike said she was dead "147 days yesterday, 148 today" which is five months.

Teacher's Pet

I loved it when Angel came to warn Buffy about the vampire with a claw and not to let him corner her. Angel puts his leather jacket around Buffy's shoulders. And then in the Bronze after Buffy has taken care of the vampire with a claw and she tries to return Angel's jacket and he tells her that it looks better on her.

I loved the look on her face. She was trying not to fall for him and with his cryptic talk and disappearing act he was making it easy but when he did that with the jacket she knew that it was going to be a losing battle. She was smitten.

I like to think that Buffy sparring with Angel made HIM a better fighter. ha ha

I agree wholheartedly with your last sentence. Angel had definitely picked up a few of her moves.
I wonder what he would've given Buffy in S4 as a gift. In season one he gave her his leather jacket, in season two he gave her a Claddaugh ring, in season three he gave her a book of love poems.

I think cross her gave her in season 1 was more important simbol then his jacket 🙂

Of course that goes without saying. I just thought it was a nice gentlemanly thing to do and won her over.

I was about to post the same thing. ;)
When I wrote that I forgot about the cross for a second. Bad me. I'm enough of a devoted Bangel fan to know only too well about the silver cross in Welcome to the Hellmouth that saved her life from Luke in The Harvest. I thought it was so beautifully meaningful that a repetent demon named Angel was giving the warrior of light human a cross necklace and saying "Don't turn your back on this." The same necklace that would later burn the cross symbol into his flesh after a kiss and that in Prophecy Girl she would rip off herself and toss on the ground when she hears there is a prophecy that says she is going to get murdered only to put it back on a few hours later and sacrifice herself for the greater good.

I love reading your posts!!!
Interesting little factoids you got up there. 🙂 This ep is not one of my faves, but it features Xander so I don't skip it during the rewatches I do. 😉

I list this episode as the rare Buffy eps I don't really like. It's just..the plot is kinda dumb and seems a little forced. What I like (there's always something to like in Buffy) is Dr.Gregory's kindness towards Buffy and just that tad of trust she needed to receive. Those are the good teachers (that of course Joss would kill) we can't find nowadays...those who just don't give up on their students because they have a deadline to meet...so I like this little message here.

I really love the part where Doctor Gregory is nice to Buffy. The moment is just so nice and the part where she puts his glasses in his coat pocket is a fitting end.

Its a shame that relationship never got to grow.

Yeah, the only teacher who believed in Buffy got killed! Such a shame.

I was just watching this episode today and at the end they shows eggs in the closet but that never gets mentions again?? That stands out to me as so odd because Joss never brings something up just to never do anything with it. Its like a Mind*** lol It just always bugs me when I watch this episode.

Ohh yes, the infamous eggs! Who knows, maybe someone found them and trashed them (but how would they find them???) or maybe the writers simply just forgot about them..LOL

I always wonder where Angel's jacket ends up. I don't think we see Buffy wearing it again.

Of course we see it again.

In The Pack..Willow even tells her: "Not even for a dangerous and mysterious older man whose leather
jacket you're wearing right now?"

She wears it in Angel:

I always thought Buffy lost it when she went to the Master 'cause when Xander revived her she didn't pick it up or something but in When She Was Bad she has it on again towards the end...

...so I don't know..maybe she went to pick it up later. LOL
