You are incorrect. When each subscriber pays $20 a month just to access HBO and there are no advertisers looking at ratings then ratings, in themselves should not matter. Pay channels are premium channels because they offer premium content which you cannot find on commercial television, thus ratings should not apply, only the number of subscriptions.

Further, with Game of Thrones, the number of subscriptions don't even matter. They do not seem to care about that figure as much as they do the piracy rates.

It's the equivilent to a measuring contest with them now to see whose fanbase is the biggest. That is why they threw a hissy fit when Netflix announced their ratings for Daredevil and called them into question.

Not really. It was only after word of mouth of the ending of the first season that people really started to pay attention. The first season was in the low 2's. That's a prime cancellation number for HBO.
