I've got film 1, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7. I never could find film 2. Yes the capabilities used for special effects were models and creatures that were obviously people in costume. The obvious bit to watch for is the werewolves feet. It wasn't until disabled people began to run fast in sprung steel as feet that werewolves had rear paws that looked real.
What is enjoyable is seeing what the actors looked like years ago. In Howling 5 check out the man who is in charge of the castle tour and think of a English TV cop show.
