Ten Years of Fandom

So as we celebrate Buffy Boards' 10th birthday, we thought it would be a great idea to talk about where we were in the fandom 10 years ago and where we think we'll be 10 years from now. 🙂

Ten years ago, it was 2002 and Season 6 was coming to a close in the US. I was slightly panicked because we were getting ready to move and where we were moving to, we weren't going to have the channel BtVS came on anymore. I relished watching every single episode of Buffy, even though Season 6 wasn't really my favorite season. I remember being absolutely shocked at the attempted rape scene between Spike and Buffy, and thinking that the end of Season 6 was setting it up for my dream of Buffy and Xander to finally get together. 😉
Ten years from now, I don't know if I will still be as active in the fandom as I am now. I'll be 40 years old, and my oldest will be in college and my youngest will be starting high school (OMG that is a terrifying thought!). I doubt I'll have a lot of time for creating the fanart and stuff that I love so much now, but who knows? Maybe I'll be able to do a rewatch and share the show with my youngest and let her experience it as a teenager the way I experienced it first-run. I think the show, even though some of it will be horribly dated, will still have a lot to offer young girls growing up in the world and I'd love to give her that.
 
Well 10 years ago, I was 10. And I watched what my parents did. They didn't watch Buffy, so I didn't. So I don't have a story there.

Ten years from now... I expect to be quite active in the Buffy fandom... and by that I mean ten years from now, I expect to be at least in LA working towards being an actor/writer in the entertainment industry. And I will always credit Buffy for changing my life. Because it did. It made me believe I could do anything... well more specifically, Spike did. So ten years from now, I feel quite confident that people will know that about me and the show.
 
Ten years ago, I was definitely watching BtVS, despite only being 10 myself. I used to watch it on BBC2, and often at my friend's house, as she has two older sisters. I enjoyed it, but moreso because her sisters did, and I thought they were cool! (Now I'm the cool one 😛)

In 10 years time, hopefully I'll have moved South, will have several small children, be married and working as a primary school teacher.
 
10 years ago, I started watching Buffy as well. I was going through a really tough point in my childhood, and Buffy got me through everything.

10 years from now, I should hopefully have my music career off the ground, wearing Whedonverse TV shirts in all of my videos, and have about a millions Grammy's. 😀

Ten years ago I was eleven and I wasn't watching Buffy. In fact my first memory of Buffy isn't until a year later when the series was ending and I heard people talking about how sad they were it was ending and I was all 'GOOD. Buffy's a stupid name for a show anyway' lol

Ten years from now... I freak out if I think about whats going to happen ten minutes from now lol no thank you. But all I'll say is I better have kids.
 
Ten years ago I had absolutely no idea what fandom was much less a forum board. I sat next to a girl on the school bus who was obsessed with BTVS and we would chat about the show. Sometimes I wonder if she is on any Buffy boards.

Ten years from now, I hope BB is still as active as it is today. I hope to be settled into a stable career and hope to have a beautiful family. 🙂
 
10 years ago I was 8 going on 9, and I was just getting into Buffy. I think around this time, I was begging my parents and/or grandparents to buy me season 4 on DVD for my birthday, in June. I thought that season 4 was the last one of the series, and for some strange reason I wanted to start from the end and work my way forward. Haha it was kind of frustrating, and I'd never have the patience for that now, but I'm glad that I did it that way. It made me so beyond obsessed with the show because I didn't know who Faith or Drusilla were, and I was just extremely confused. I think that I'm just starting to become active in the fandom, because I'm sick of not having anyone to discuss Buffy with.

I kind of liked not having anyone who knew more about the show around haha I'm kind of a lone wolf, but recently I started watching Angel and I tried to express my frustration over...several things that happened in that show, but no one I know has seen Angel so I decided to find some people who have good taste in television 😉 I've also sort of "re-discovered" BTVS lately, I didn't fully appreciate the show or realize just how fantastic it really is, until very recently. I'm sure that I'll be just as obsessed (or maybe more) with Buffy when I'm 28 😀 hopefully I'll be a world renowned filmmaker or best selling author by then, and I'll put tons of Buffy references in my films/books. I don't know how popular Buffy will be in 10 years, I think it'll always maintain a cult following. My little sister used to like it, and my littlest sister will as well. Hopefully.

10 years ago, I'd never seen an episode of Buffy. I didn't watch until 2008. I was involved in fandom, but it was for Harry Potter.

10 years from now, who knows. I'd like to say I'll still love Buffy and the fandom, but 10 years ago I thought I'd never leave the HP fandom and yet I did.
 
10 years ago I had only seen one episode of Buffy, and that was hush. I didn't start watching it until 2008 when I started staying at home with my first son.

10 years from now I will still love Buffy. I don't think I will ever stop.

10 years ago I was a part of another forum that was far less active than this one but I remember it fondly cause I met some nice people there (which lead me to remember Buffy-people fondly and that's how I eventually sought my way here when I was in need of a forum once more) 🙂

10 years ago I was at the height of my Buffy frenzy... watching it obsessively, buying all the collector's editions as soon as Amazon released them even though they were far too expensive for me ( I still have them all Btvs and Ats and they're oh so pretty 🙂) It's crazy to think that for over ten years me and my sister have been quoting the same show over and over, even if we don't watch it as often we still remember our favorite moments and are sure to quote them for another ten years to our friends annoyance 😉
 
10 years ago I was a huge fan of Buffy, I was watching the show but I wasn't yet a member of this board. I joined a year later.

10 years from now I hope to still be a member and I hope to still be interested in Buffy. I've just re-watched the show (I'm up to the last few episode of season 7) and can see why I love it so much. If I'm anything like my mum, I'll definitely still be interested, she still watches the shows she watched when she was younger.
 
10 years ago I was 14 and a half years old and was a couple of days in to Year 10. 2002 was not particularly a good year for me. In around March/April I began to like alternative music and politics and was bullied mercilessly for my 'uniqueness'. On top of that I was doing incredibly well with my grades, and doing so remarkably (and obviously) effortlessly. Although now I would see this as a positive unfortunately my school mates did not feel the same.

I also had my first semi-serious boyfriend. Hilariously enough, people assumed it was all one of those made up boyfriends as he had all the markings of the make-believe boyfriend. He was attending a different high school that was about an hours drive away, he was playing guitar in a band (although in retrospect... badly), was good looking with glistening, straight teeth and came from a wealthy background. I took in a photo to prove to my school mates that he wasn't fake and instead of the warm reception I was expecting people just gave me shit for dating a 'punk' (I use inverted commas as he was very clearly an indie/hipster boy; skinny jeans, chuck taylors, the vines shirt, black glasses and tunnels)

In 10 years time I will be 34 years old. This terrifies me. I don't know where I'll be.
 
10 years ago I was 15 years old. That was a strange period in my life. I was pretty sick from my eating disorder, so a lot revolved around food for me. I did pretty well in school, and couldn't wait to get out of "högstadiet" so I could start "gymnasiet". 🙂Maybe I watched a couple of episodes on Channel 4 in Sweden when I was bored, but if so the show never caught me. I hung out at a alternative forum in Sweden called skunk (did you also do that other swedes? Oh how I miss it 🙂), but I had no idea fandom forum existed. I didn't find out 'til I joined this board. 🙂

In 10 years I'll be 35 years old. I will have finished my education and work as some kind of social worker. I'll probably live in a different town and probably have a child. My husband and I Will have been married for 15 (15! That's crazy!) years. I'm confident I will still love Buffy. I Will probably be a part of this forum if it still exists (please do!), but maybe I wont be as active.
 
Ten years ago I was in the midst of a very deep addiction of the show Friends and had never heard of BtVS.
Think it was like two years later when I first heard of Buffy and a character named Spike, that I clearly remember someone had a picture of as an avatar on a board I visited daily back then.

On that same board I was introduced to Firefly that later got me to Buffy.
But ten years ago I wasn't aware of it at all...

In another ten years I'm probably pretty much at the same place I am now.
Perhaps Buffy has been pushed back a little bit further to make room for some new awesome shows but I'm confident that I will still love it and that I still will be watching it every now and then.

10 years ago I was 8, so that was probably when I was going through my obsessed-with-everything-Pokemon-related phase, and when I was becoming more and more a Harry Potter fan as I read the books.

10 years from now, I'll hopefully be married with a kid. Wow, that's weird to think about. I hope to still be a relatively active member and Buffy fan.
 
10 years ago I was watching Buffy on tv as it aired and I on the 6th I rejoined BB after finding out it had been revamped and under Darla and started posting away 🙂

10 years in the future I hope to be happy with Abs and maybe have a loving man in my life. I'll still be on BB and still be watching reruns of the show and discovering new shows 🙂
 
10 years ago I was 8, going to be 9 and I was a Buffy fan back then. The show started airing here a year later than it did in the USA, so when you guys finished with first season, I was watching it. I didn't understand much back then, but I was attracted to the show for some reason.. it was then when I discovered me "weirdness" with being the only girl in the playground who want to play Buffy, and not bake cookies out of sand.

10 years from now, I hope I'll have a job I like, be married and have a kid on the way.. well, it's weird to think about it, but at the age of 29 I'll be ready.. hopefully. But I wish to stay crazy old me obsessed with my favorite shows.
 
Ten years ago I had never heard of the word "fandom", I had never used the internet and had no idea any of this existed. I was 14, in second year of secondary school and pretty much spent my entire week waiting for Thursday nights because that was when Buffy and Angel were on. By then I was into music in a very heavy way, especially Hiphop, Rap and Rock which made my mother rather uncomfortable, and in turn made me listen to it all the louder. I was pretty much all over the place. But hey, I think that is the rule of being 14.

In ten years time I'll be 34 (Egads!). By then I hope to be about 4 years into my lecturing career, or at least be an established historian. I have no idea where in the world I'll be or who I'll be with. I just hope it's sunny lol 😉
 
Let's see...ten years ago I was 17 and in a complete freak-out regarding BtVS. It had switched to UPN and our local TV carriers didn't have that channel!! I made my then-boyfriend download the eps and put them on DVD for me to watch each week.

BB is the first forum I have ever visited or joined. I knew nothing of fandom like this, fan art, or that people even really discussed TV shows and movies in this much depth. I'm so glad I googled that day!

In ten years I'll have another kid or two, maybe working more since the kids will be in school, but still living where I'm at. And I'll have been married for almost 15 years! Wowsa...

10 years ago I was 15 and I got that lovely boxed set that started everything. And I was completely besotted with Angel. Oh yeah. I drew him about 50 times before I got over it. LOL I didn't have anyone to talk to about it. I didn't know about fandom. We didn't get a computer at my house until I was 19 and by then, I was way too into music to even think about TV.

10 years from now, I expect I will still watch the show occasionally and I'm sure I'll still be finding different ways of thinking about it and learning from it. Plus it really is a huge inspiration for me. In the idea of being strong, emotionally, mentally, and physically. Watching Buffy actually motivates me to do Yoga and Exercise, so I think I'll still be watching it, for sure. And as long as this board is still here, I suspect I will be as well. 😀
