I really enjoyed this film, and I have to say that it works quite well in relation to the other movies. The main reason being Marcus. Probably the most human of the characters in this movie, while also being a machine.
I like to think that his willingness to sacrifice himself for the lives of humans, plays a large part in John's decision to send back a terminator to protect himself in Terminator 2, and also Kate's decision to send one back in Terminator three to protect them both.
The young Kyle Reese is great to see, and I think Anton Yelchin mirrors Michael Biehn nicely.
Christian Bale is fine as John Connor, but it never really feels like his film, which is strange. It would have been nice to see some more emotional scenes between him and Kate, instead he comes across as very cold, and actually machine like. 🙂 Where as Marcus relationship with Blair, although very rushed, comes across as more meaningful. Side note: Moon Bloodgood is all kinds of hot. 😀
The final moment with the heart is a little cringy, but I'll let them away with it, since Marcus is such a nice chap, uh machine.
I consider myself a big terminator fan, so I would put this around the same level as Terminator 3. Which I did like, although every "true" terminator fan says I shouldn't, but I did 😛. I liked that version of John, I liked that Sarah died in such a human way, and not some big epic battle, I loved the down-beat ending and I liked Katherine, who sadly is really under-used in this film.
