Maybe depends on if you see it as entertainment or as a "good argument against gun control" as the title says. As for the argument I see I think it's just plain silly. But there's always a chance that I see it wrong as to what it was intended. Especially since I'm not a fan of guns. But I won't get into it here partially because I could be wrong but also because it's such a heated subject.

As for the entertainment bit I'm not a fan of William Shatner (yes I said it) but with the right people in a show I like I probably would have smiled. That I can't deny.
 
The point trying to be made is that if 'normal' society is armed, then the criminals would be less likely to brandish guns. An unarmed populous makes easy targets for an armed assailant.

Guns, like war and eating meat and famine and starvation and nuclear weapons, are bad and unnecessary.
That's just my take on it. The world is pretty messed up. It's sad that they're proposing to arm the average person for protection against the "criminals". There shouldn't have been any guns designed and made in the first place. The world should be a utopia, but it isn't and probably will never be because of human nature. 🙁

The name of the thread came from Shatner's statement at the end of the video, and it wasn't meant to be any kind of political statement. I just thought that it was at least as funny as the "Now, THAT'S a knife" scene from "Crocodile Dundee."

I know! I wasn't really even referring to the nature of this thread, I just wanted to state my views on guns and stuff, because.. well, I'm morbid like that :P

This argument makes me facepalm myself into a light coma.
 
Personally, I think it should have said that an unarmed populous makes an easy target for a corrupt government.

I honestly had no intention of turning this thread into a debate on the pros and cons of firearm ownership or use, but I will say this one thing and nothing more on the subject.

Guns are inanimate objects. They are neither good nor bad. I grew up in a household where guns were owned and used regularly for hunting and shooting, and I was properly trained in their safe and proper use. Other than my time in the military, I have never so much as knowingly pointed a firearm in the vicinity of another human being, and I pray that I will never again be in a situation where such an action might become necessary.

There will always be good people and bad people, and the latter will always try and find something to make themselves superior to the former. If there were no guns, there would still be knives, clubs, or rocks. If there is, or ever will be, a solution to the problem of man's inhumanity to man, it will involve changing people's attitude, not trying to blame the problem on inanimate objects. Blaming guns, or any other type of weapon, either actual or improvised, for violence or crime is no different than blaming obesity on a particular food just because it tastes so good.
 
But see, if neither of them had guns in the first place, the whole problem would be solved. There isn't a single good thing that can come from a gun, because they're only used for pain and death.

Try explaining that to the 2,000,000 target shooters in the United States alone, who never hunt. They only inflict pain and death on paper targets, steel plates, and clay pigeons.

Next, you'll be telling me that the last 40 plus years that I have devoted to studying the martial arts was just so that I could beat people up.
 
Target shooting is fun. It is not, however, so fun that it could possibly ever balance out the problems that come along with gun proliferation.

While I'm a staunch believer in gun control, I still have to say that the picture you are painting here is far too simple. Guns used for hunting are causing death, yes, but if we want to eat meat I'd say that there are few more ethical ways to get that meat than through a clean kill by a good hunter.
